Color Droze and Guyas winners at the Monet 5K

It took eighteen months after the inaugural Monet 5K for Alliance Francaise de Tallahassee to hold the second annual race. Nevertheless, on Sunday morning, 20 November 2016, the athletes were on the Tallahassee, Florida campus of Florida State University for that event. Master runner Gary Droze, the Tallahassee Community College cross-country coach, won the race in 18:22, finishing close to 200 meters ahead of the next runner. Martha Bademan Guyas, women's champ at the 2015 Monet 5K, successfully defended her title, placing eighth overall in 23:50. 48 athletes finished the second annual race.

The impressionist paintings of Claude Monet, the race's namesake, featured mostly flat landscapes--shorelines, gardens, and fields. If Monet was looking for a more alpine setting for his work, he could have used the Monet 5K course. The route was the challenging loop around Florida State University, a course that's used at least once almost every weekend for a campus race. The loop includes the highest spot on campus--Gallows Hill on Copland Street--and the lowest spot on campus--Budweiser Creek. There's a difference in elevation of about a hundred feet between those two points, and plenty of up-and-down running along the way. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Florida State students convince visiting friends to run campus races just to watch them struggle on the hills.

Gary Droze hadn't run the Monet 5K before, but he had run more than a few other races on the same course, enough that he was familiar with every up and down. 18:22 wasn't his fastest time on the course, but it was fast enough to get the win. Paul Guyas, another veteran of racing the loop around Florida State, was second in 19:08. Franz Roeder hadn't had as much experience on the course as the first two runners, but as a junior on the Lincoln High cross-country team he had plenty of practice running hills. Roeder was third in 20:07.

Martha Guyas's 23:50 was only one second different from the 23:49 she ran in 2015, but the result was much the same as she won the women's title in both races. Leon High french teacher Julia Sura was the fist woman master in the race, the second female finisher and eleventh overall in 25:55. Master runner Arsinoe Speliotopoulos was third in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 29:50.

More distance at Encounter 316 means more wins for Guyas and Johnson

Tallahassee athlete Paul Guyas won the Encounter 316 five-mile run on Saturday morning, 18 June 2016. Guyas covered the five miles through the streets of Thomasville, Georgia in 31:25. Beverly Johnson was the first woman in the race, finishing fourth overall in 40:05.

I don't have a large enough sample size to state a statistically significant conclusion, but my gut feeling is that there is a trend of races adding longer distance events to their program. For example, fixtures that have gotten by with a 5K and a one-mile fun run for years are including a 10K on the menu. Other races are suddenly offering a half marathon option. This is just a casual observation that I don't intend to explore any farther, so if you want to crunch some numbers and get a scholarly paper out of it then feel free.

Encounter 316 fueled my suspicions by starting out in 2015 as a 5K race, then adding the five mile event in 2016. Guyas took advantage of the longer run, as did Thomasville's Chad Johnson. Johnson was the fastest master runner in the five mile, finishing second overall in 34:47. Lance Parker took third in 36:55.

Polyanna Bass was the first woman master in the race, placing second in the women's standings behind Beverly Johnson. Bass was sixth overall in 45:31. Lori Richardson was the third female finisher, coming in tenth overall in 47:16.

Kiros and Guyas go to town in Midtown

"I almost got lost again," admitted Geb Kiros.

Kiros is getting so notorious for taking wrong turns during road races that he should probably be required to either tape a course map to his arm or wear a shirt with Don't Follow Me printed on the back. But any missteps he took on Saturday, 11 June 2016, didn't cost him competively, because that morning Kiros won the 5K at Fifth in the Midtown section of Tallahassee, Florida. Kiros covered the 3.1-mile course in 18:40. Martha Guyas was won women's title at the race, placing eighth overall in 24:30.

The race started at 8:00 AM with the runners heading east on Ingleside Avenue. After half a kilometer three runners were out front--master runners Geb Kiros and Myles Gibson followed by Tyler Sununu.

"I stayed with him for about 500 meters, but I had to let him go after that," said Gibson. "After that, my strategy was to follow him until he got lost and then take over."

Kiros never got more than a few steps off course, though, and his lead widened during the middle of the race. Sununu fell entirely out of contention, but Gibson tried for a late-race comeback.

Myles Gibson

"I was closing on him at the end," said Gibson. "But he was too far ahead."

Gibson never got closer than twelve seconds as Kiros got the win in 18:40 while Gibson was runner-up in 18:52. Sununu crossed the finish line on Fifth Avenue third in 19:29.

Leon High School volleyball player Jordyn Goracke led the women's field early, but Martha Guyas was never far behind. Guyas overtook Goracke less than a kilometer into the race then ran the rest of the way unchallenged, taking the women's title in 24:30. After moving up to third in the women's standings during the race, Melissa Cooper was gaining on Goracke, but Goracke held on to take the second women's spot and eleventh overall in 26:40. Cooper was the third female finisher and thirteenth overall in 26:50.

"Today is the fourth Saturday in a row that I won," said Kiros. During that span, the Florida A & M University biostatistics professor has picked up victories in Blountstown and in Fort Worth, Texas, as well as two in Tallahassee. That's a lot of racing, and he still wasn't done for the day.

"This is just round one for me," said Kiros. He was planning on running the Potluck Four Mile in Tallahassee that evening.

The 5K at Fifth is held annually by the Leon High School volleyball team. Proceeds from the race benefit the team and the Tallahassee Memorial Cancer Center.

Truchelut and Bademan make an impression at the Monet 5K

Ryan TruchelutAs a doctoral candidate at Florida State University, Ryan Truchelut doesn't have a whole lot of spare time.

"My dissertation is due in a week," explained Truchelut. "I haven't been sleeping a lot."

But on Sunday morning, 17 May 2015, when Alliance Française of Tallahassee staged the Monet 5K on the FSU campus, Truchelut found time to race, even with the finish line of his Ph.D. research approaching.

"It was near my church, so it was really two trips in one," said Truchelut. "It's the only race where they're sure to pronounce my name correctly. And it was a good workout for summer track."

James Harrison, Ryan TruchelutIt was good that Truchelut was able to find a way to attend, because he was the fastest of the 80 athletes in the Monet 5K, winning the 3.1-mile race in 19:13. James Harrison, a first-year student at Florida State and an alumnus of the Lemon Bay High cross-country team, was able to stay with Truchelut for 800 meters or so, but no longer.

"He was gone by the hill on Call Street," recalled Truchelut.

After that Truchelut was alone and out front, with no distractions from the competition for more than four kilometers on his way to the finish line. By the time he crossed that line, he was more than 300 meters ahead of the next runner.

"I wanted to hum La Marseillaise as I crossed the finish line," said Truchelut. "But I was too out of breath. I hummed it at the awards presentation, though."

Martha BademanHarrison took the runner-up spot in 20:33. Jim Schaeffer was the first master runner in the race, placing third overall in 21:52.

Jena Mickel was the early leader in the women's competition. Unlike Truchelut, her lead didn't go unchallenged. Martha Bademan wasn't going to let Mickel steal the Monet 5K.

"When I started there were two girls ahead of me," said Bademan. "I passed one right away and then kind of crept up on the next one. I caught her on Jefferson Street."

"The next one" was Mickel, whom Bademan overtook about halfway through the race. Bademan built up a healthy lead during the second half of the 5K, ultimately taking the women's title and finishing seventh overall in 23:49. Mickel was runner-up on the women's side, coming in ninth overall in 24:01. Julia Sura was the top woman master and third female finisher, placing 13th overall in 26:04.
