Through 2011 and 2012, Peter Kaus owned the title and the course record at the Run For Autism 5K. In the sixth annual race on 30 March 2013, though, Kaus lost both as Florida State University philosophy student Jeff O'Connell ran to a 17:25 win, setting a new record for the 3.1-mile course through Tallahassee's Southwood community. 273 athletes completed the route.
The race started at 9:00 AM ET from the Southwood Town Center, heading immediately down a hill to Grove Park Drive--the same hill the runners would have to climb three miles later to get to the finish line. Late in the first kilometer, as the runners circled the perimeter of Southwood's Central Park, a lead group of four runners emerged; two-time defending champion Peter Kaus, followed by Peter Van Brussel, Jeff O'Connell, and Bryce Cole. Kaus maintained a stiff pace, stretching out the lead pack. Cole dropped out of contention during the second kilometer and was overtaken by master runner Mickey Moore. O'Connell passed Van Brussel, setting his sights on Kaus. With one kilometer to go, it was Kaus vs. O'Connell, and O'Connell made his move. A former Furman University distance runner, O'Connell moved steadily away from Kaus, beating him to the finish line 17:25 to 17:44. Van Brussel held off Moore for third, 18:06 to 18:09, while Cole ran 18:43 to hang on to fifth.
Sheri Poskanzer finished 19th overall in 22:18, adding the Run For Autism 5K women's title to the Thomasville Road Baptist Church 5K win she earned earlier in the month. Nearly 100 meters back, Kaitlin Moriarty was the second female finisher, placing 26th overall in 22:44. Stephanie Davis was the third woman, finishing 33rd overall in 23:49, just ahead of the fourth woman and first woman master, Laura Reina. Reina was 34th overall in 23:56.
