Mizereck and Adriani outrun the field at Potluck

The Potluck Four-Miler is a cross-country prediction run, with the winners determined by who comes closest to their predicted time, and not who runs the fastest. Not all of the runners are convinced of that, though. Plus, the Potluck is a Gulf Winds Track Club Grand Prix race, with points going to the fastest runners--further discouraging folks from sacrificing speed for accuracy. So it's not really a surprise to find people racing the prediction run, and turning out some fast times.

The times were especially fast on 5 June 2010, as three-time FHSAA cross-country champion Matt Mizereck raced to a 22:14 victory at the thirteenth annual Potluck Four Mile. Mizereck's only previous appearance at the Potluck was in 2006, when as a fourteen-year-old middle school student he finished 15th in 26:23. This time around, Mizereck took the lead almost immediately and held it for the entire race, finishing over 160 meters ahead of runner-up, Riley Doherty, who ran 22:49. Mizereck is a recent graduate of Leon High, where Doherty still competes in cross-country and track. Vince Molosky was another 80 meters back in third place in 23:07. Tony Guillen finished ninth overall to beat out Mike Martinez for the masters' title 24:44 to 25:18.

Micah Adriani was the top woman finisher, running 27:39 to place 29th overall, well ahead of her nearest challenger, Olivia Swedberg, who was 43rd overall in 29:51. It was Adriani's second straight year at the front of the Potluck. The next woman in was the first woman master across the line, Kim Likens, 49th overall in 30:33.

The Potluck Four Mile is run on a challenging course through Phipps Park that climbs up and down the slopes of the Lake Jackson basin. The race starts at the youth sports fields in the park off of Meridian Road, wanders west into the Phipps Park trail system, and then returns east to finish in front of Forestmeadows Athletic Center. The race was followed by a potluck dinner social, after which the recipients of the 2010 Chenoweth Awards were announced. Gulf Winds Track Club annually presents the Chenoweth Awards to the year's top male and female high school athletes from Tallahassee and the surrounding area in the sports of track & field and cross country.
