The Hurricane 5K is a breeze for Travis Boltjes and Viviana Schuyler

On Saturday morning, 21 May 2022, hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean was still nearly ten days away. It may not have been time for a storm in Tallahassee, Florida, but it was time for the Capital City Red Cross's annual Robin Lotane Hurricane 5K. Panama City, Florida master runner Travis Boltjes ran away from the field, covering the 3.1 miles through Tom Brown Park in 17:31. Viviana Schuyler of Bainbridge, Georgia took top honors for the women, placing seventh overall in 22:21.

The race started in front of the American Red Cross building on Easterwood Drive. Travis Boltjes and Ryan Truchelut shared the lead initially. Truchelut, a Tallahassee meteorologist, had won the race in 2017, but during the second kilometer he realized that he wasn't going to be able to keep up with Boltjes. After Truchelut fell back, Boltjes opened a gap of more than 600 meters before crossing the finish line back at the Red Cross, first in 17:31. Truchelut was second in 20:06. In a close race for third, Tallahassee master runner Paul Guyas finished in 20:53, just ahead of Kenneth Gloeckner at 20:56 and Duane Evans at 20:57.

Viviana Schuyler, the women's champ, was a 2021 alum of Bainbridge High, where she was a standout on the school's cross-country team. Her 22:21 at the Red Cross 5K put her almost 200 meters ahead of the next woman in the race. Monica Toth of Tallahassee was the first woman master in the race, placing second in the women's standings and eighth overall in 23:09. Tallahassee's Martha Guyas was the third woman and seventeenth overall in 26:25.
