Bryan Koon and Paula O'Neill run like the wind at the Hurricane 5K

Bryan KoonAfter winning the Robin Lotane Red Cross Hurricane 5K, Bryan Koon was almost apologetic.

"I had to run fast, he explained. "I have to get back to work."

As the Director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, Koon was indeed needed back at work while Tropical Storm Karen loomed in the Gulf of Mexico. But even after a 17:30 3.1-mile run through Tallahassee's Tom Brown Park, Koon still had to linger a few more minutes while his eight-year-old son, Patrick, finished the race. At 23:29 Patrick Koon crossed the finish line in 12th place, and the Director could get back to monitoring the storm.

Tony Guillen and Bryan KoonThe sixth annual race started on Saturday morning, 5 October 2013, from the Easterwood Drive headquarters of the Capital Area chapter of the American Red Cross, just outside Tom Brown Park. A few hundred meters of racing took the runners into the park, where Bryan Koon and Tony Guillen, running side by side, were leading the field of 165 athletes. In third place, Reikan Lin followed the two master runners, but Koon and Guillen soon left him far behind. The pair continued to run together till the two mile mark, where Koon surged ahead.

"With about a mile to go, Bryan said, 'Okay, I'm going now,'" recalled Guillen. "He told me, and I still couldn't do anything."

Koon spent that last mile building up a lead of about 200 meters, beating Guillen to the finish line 17:30 to 18:15. Reikan Lin was third in 19:13.
Paula O'Neill

Paula O'Neill went to the front of the women's field almost immediately, and was soon in complete charge of the competition. The Tallahassee master runner was the first woman finisher, crossing the line over a minute before the runner-up and placing ninth overall in 22:50. Mallory Brooks was second in the women's standings, finishing 14th overall in 23:53. Just behind Brooks, Laura Reina was the third woman runner, 15th overall in 24:00.
