Burns and Canada top the field at the Stop The Violence 5K

Tallahassee master runner Mike Burns outlasted Wyatt Brooks during a 3.1-mile run through the Southwood community of Tallahassee, Florida, winning Refuge House's inaugural Stop The Violence 5K, 20:56 to 21:07. Sandra Canada was the first female finisher in the race, placing seventh overall in 25:05.

Mike BurnsThe run started just after 4:00 PM on Sunday afternoon, 6 October 2013, from the Southwood Town Center. Following a USATF certified course (FL10091EBM), the runners circled Southwood's Central Park before turning west to loop Florida State University School, then continued the circuit of the park and returned to the Town Center for the finish. Wyatt Brooks was leading at the mile mark, about the time the runners reached FSUS. While circling the schoolhouse, Mike Burns moved past Arek Sarkissian to move into second. Never more than a few seconds apart, Brooks and Burns left the rest of the field far behind. About 600m from the finish, the runners turned off of Grove Park Drive onto Mulberry Park Boulevard, heading away from the Central Park and back toward the Town Center. Burns slipped past Brooks on that turn, and the two drove toward the finish. Burns slightly extended his lead on the Boulevard and on the uphill finish on Ivy Green Trail, winning in 20:56. Brooks was second in 21:07. After spending the afternoon marking the course, master runner Bill McGuire was third in 22:54.

Sandra CanadaFSU Law student Courtney Walmer led the women's field through about three kilometers, but then master runner Sandra Canada took over. Canada set the pace for the women for the rest of the race, finishing in 25:05 as the first female and seventh overall. Walmer was the next woman across the finish line, eighth overall in 25:50. The third female finisher was twelve-year-old Katherine Whichel, tenth overall in 25:05.

About 120 athletes participated in the first year event.
