Linton and Rosen are the twin terrors of Tall Timbers in Tallahassee's Pine Run 20K

BeautyberryI know you've seen them--small, purple berries in clusters along the stalk of the plant that they grow on. You might have spotted them in a corner of your yard that nature is trying to take back from the lawn, or in a sunny spot along a trail that you run on. The plant is called beautyberry, and you can spot its fruits at this time of year. For 36 of the last 37 years, that has been the time of year of the Pine Run 20K. The 12.4-mile annual race has been run in two different locations in two different states, and even skipped a year in 2007. Other than that missed year, though, when the beautyberry plants started showing purple, you knew it was time for the Pine Run.

The beautyberry plants were out once again on Saturday morning, 12 October 2013, when Stanley Linton won the 36th Pine Run 20K, turning in a time of 74:27. It was Linton's first Pine Run, and the victory came less than a day after he had posted a 25:45 8K in the men's race at the FSU Cross-Country Invitational on Friday evening. Vince Molosky, a three-time champion of the Pine Run (2008, 2010, and 2012), finished runner-up in 77:16, over 700 meters behind Linton. Another five minutes back, Sammy Palmer was third in 81:23.

Stanley Linton and Sheryl RosenPine Run veterans could point to more success in the performance of Sheryl Rosen. Rosen won the women's competition at the race for the fourth time, placing fourth overall in  85:36 and finishing more than a mile and a half ahead of the next woman in the race. Allison Palmer was the runner-up on the women's side, coming in 29th overall at 97:38. Urska Dobersek (36th, 99:55) was the third female finisher.

In the 2012 Pine Run, Tony Guillen had finished as first master runner, leaving Mike Peymann runner-up in the master standings. In the 2013 race, Peymann returned the favor, taking top master honors by finishing seventh overall in 86:33, while Guillen trailed home with an eighth place 87:19. After the two Tallahassee runners settled their battle for the male master title, Mary Anne Grayson won the female master title for her hometown of Thomasville, Georgia, coming in 41st overall in 1:41:49.

171 athletes finished the 2013 Pine Run, the sixth run at Tall Timbers since 2008, when the Gulf Winds Track Club moved the race there from International Paper's Southlands Experimental Forest near Bainbridge, Georgia. This was the first year that Chuck and Jana Davis directed the race. Many things change, but the beautyberry plants endure. So does the Pine Run.
