Linton and Showman storm to Hurricane 5K wins

Stanley LintonOn Labor Day, 5 September 2011, three hours after the National Hurricane Center issued its final advisory on Tropical Depression Lee, nearly 500 miles east of the center of what was left of the storm, Stanley Linton led a field of 273 runners through the streets of Southwood to win the fourth annual Robin Lotane Memorial Hurricane 5K. A cross-country runner at Wakulla High, Linton was in front from the starting line to the finish line, covering the course in 17:06. The fastest master of the morning was Gulf Winds Track Club's Mike Martinez, fourth overall in 17:44. Katie Showman, the 2010 Hurricane 5K runner-up, was the fleetest woman finisher, placing twelfth overall in 19:24, over 300 meters ahead of the second-place woman, Laura McDermott (32nd, 21:51). Paula O'Neill (36th, 22:18) was the third woman finisher and top woman master.

Sean MendesAfter a night of rain, the sun started to peek through the clouds as the runners took the starting line. After the first kilometer Wakulla High's Stanley Linton was out in front by about ten yards, pacing the runners down Shumard Oak Boulevard. Sean Mendes, Brian Griffith, and Robert Abellera were a few yards back, leading the chase. Abellera dropped out of the pursuit during the second kilometer, leaving Mendes and Griffith 40 meters behind Linton as the race started a circuit of Southwood's Central Park. Griffith folded on the way around the park, and when the leaders arrived at the Southwood Town Center with a kilometer left in the race, Linton was 50 meters up on Mendes. Bryan Koon, director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, had moved into third place. On a mostly downhill final kilometer, Mendes gained slightly on Linton, but Linton scampered over the finish line still 30 meters up on Mendes to take the win, 17:06 to 17:13. Koon was third in 17:27. Michael Martinez caught Joseph Garcia of Florida State University School during the last kilometer to finish fourth, 17:44 to 17:59.
Katie Showman

Katie Showman led the women's race early, and after less than a mile of racing she was half a minute ahead of Kellie Gerbers and Angela Wable, who were sharing second place. Showman was even farther ahead when the runners completed four kilometers near the Southwood Town Center, but Laura McDermott had moved into the second position and Paula O'Neill had passed Wable to move into third. The leaders held their positions over the final kilometer with Showman going on to victory in 19:24, almost two minutes faster than her 21:17 runner-up performance at the 2010 Hurricane 5K.
