Henry Lewis and Isabella Laughton make it a Wakulla High sweep at the Freedom 5K

Each June since 2013, the Wakulla High School Cross-Country Boosters have hosted the Freedom 5K at Florida's Wakulla Springs State Park. The park isn't close to the school, more than twelve miles away. It's not a regular workout venue for the team.

"We only come here once a year," said Wakulla harrier Henry Lewis, a rising junior and the team's ace. "Just for this race."


Nevertheless, on Saturday morning, 22 June 2023, at the eleventh annual Paul Hoover Freedom 5K, Lewis ran like he owned Wakulla Springs. He won the race by over 200 meters in 16:31, setting a new course record. Rising senior Isabella Laughton made it a Wakulla High sweep, taking first in the women's standings in 21:19, good for eleventh overall.

The 2023 Freedom 5K winner, Tyler Godwin, joined Lewis on the starting line, as did Tallahassee, Florida master runner Leonardo Canete. Canete had taken third in the 2023 race behind Godwin and Lewis. In the 2024 event, Canete darted into the lead right after the start. Lewis was never far behind, though, and 200 meters into the race he had taken over. Godwin also overtook Canete, but no one was going to catch Lewis that morning. Out the Cherokee Sink Trail, around the Sink, and back to the Springs, Lewis stayed in command, crossing the finish line in a winning 16:31--just better than the old course record of 16:32, set in 2017 by Justin Keefe.


Godwin, the defending champ, took second in 17:14. Canete was the first master runner in the 5K, coming in third overall in 17:49.

Isabella Laughton had raced the Freedom 5K in 2021, 2022, and 2023, finishing runner-up in the women's division twice and third once. In 2024 the race was all hers as she won by more than 250 meters with a 21:19, her best time yet at the Freedom 5K. Another Wakulla senior-to-be, Lana Hawkins, went 22:29 for the second women's spot and sixteenth overall. Serafina Rietow, a rising junior on the John Paul II Catholic High cross-country team, was the third woman and eighteenth overall in 22:52. Melissa Martin was the first woman master and sixth female finisher, 24th overall in 24:12.


After the Freedom 5K, it was still nine weeks till Wakulla High's cross-country opener at the Dueling Summits Meet in Tallahassee. Henry Lewis didn't plan to be idle during that time.

"We've got two races I want to do before cross-country season," said Lewis. "The Saint George Island Sizzler 5K and the Miller Landing Madness 8K."


And other than that?


"Just running a lot of miles," said Lewis.

129 athletes finished the Wakulla High Cross-Country Boosters' eleventh annual Paul Hoover Freedom 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed the race.

Wakulla County Meet means more cross-country wins for Madison Sims and Patrick Koon

For the Big Bend's high school cross-country teams that remained in the region on Saturday, 16 September 2023, the place to be was 3Y Ranch outside of Crawfordville, Florida. There, Wakulla High was hosting their second annual Wakulla County Cross-Country Meet. The Wakulla High girls put up 23 points in their race, taking first, while Leon took the high school boys' event with 19 boys. Leon junior Madison Sims was first in the high school girls' 5K at 20:02, her second win in two weeks. Leon senior Patrick Koon improved his 2023 cross-country record to three wins with no losses by defeating everyone in the high school boys' 5K with a 16:26.

The high school girls' race was first on the program, scheduled to start at 8:00 AM. As at the Panther Invitational seven days earlier, Leon athletes Madison Sims and Clifton Lewis ran together until the end, where junior-year harrier Sims edged the sophomore Lewis, 20:02 to 20:04. Wakulla junior Isabella Laughton followed the two Lions across the finish line, placing third in 20:13.


Laughton was only the first of five War Eagles in the top ten. The other four were senior Liliana Lewis (6th, 22:16), junior Lana Hawkins (7th, 22:46), senior Taylor Pfeifer (8th, 22:48), and senior Analecia Ferrell (9th, 22:51). With that, the Wakulla girls had 23 points, the best score of the seven teams in the race.


Lincoln High's first runner, junior NyAshia Wright, took tenth in 22:58, leading the Trojans to second place in the team standings with 70 points. Saint John Paul Catholic was third with 103 points; the team's top scorer was sophomore Serafina Rietow, fifth in 21:54.

After the Panther Invitational on 9 September 2023, Patrick Koon had said that his focus was preparing for the Pre-State race at the FSU Invitational on 30 September 2023. But at 3Y Ranch the Leon senior's immediate order of business was the Wakulla County Meet's high school boys' 5K. Koon took care of business, winning by 100 meters in 16:26. Wakulla sophomore Henry Lewis took second for the home team, running 16:46. Leon seniors took the next two places, with Quinn Carrasquilla edging Will Winsor 16:54 to 16:56.

Leon's remaining two scorers weren't far behind, with junior Cadden Maxwell fifth in 17:18 and senior Walt Haber sixth in 17:42. Only Wakulla's Lewis had prevented the Lions from scoring a perfect 15; as it was, they had a mathematically unbeatable 19 points and Leon's first Wakulla County team title.


Lewis and Wakulla scored 77 points, putting the War Eagles second in the six-team field. The Community Christian Chargers were a close third with 80 points, led by Charger eighth-grader Landon Reeves, seventh in 17:45.

The girls' 3K led off the middle school racing at the Wakulla County Meet. Holy Comforter sixth-graders Mackenzie McVay and Madison McVay headed the field, with Mackenzie taking first in 12:51 and Madison second in 12:56. Holy Comforter eighth-grader Elaine Ungru was third in 13:40.

Holy Comforter's next two scorers were eighth-grader Lillian Anway, fourth in 13:50, and sixth-grader Eleanor Blalock, fifth in 14:22. You can't do better than taking the first five places, so you couldn't have a better score than the Holy Comforter girls' 15 points--putting the Crusader girls first in the five-team field.


Riversprings was second with 73 points, the top Bear was eighth-grader Breland Smith, eleventh in 15:28. Marianna was third with 79 points, led by seventh-grader Jaymi Miller (8th, 15:00).

The first place showing by the Holy Comforter girls gave them a three-meet winning streak, but the Holy Comforter boys were perfect after the Wakulla County Meet--four wins in four outings.


Individual honors in the middle school boys' 3K, though, went to Trinity Catholic eighth-grader James Mogg, who won by nearly 200 meters in 11:02. Liberty County eighth-grader Sebastian Knight was runner-up in 11:52, and Holy Comforter eighth-grader Joshua Butera edged Trinity Catholic eighth-grader Asher McGrew for third, 11:57 to 11:59.

But Holy Comforter got the win by putting three more Crusaders in the top ten--eighth-grader Andrew Norby was sixth in 12:15, sixth-grader Hudson Cheesborough was seventh in 12:18, and eighth-grader Gavin McVay was ninth in 12:28. That was enough to give the Crusader boys 25 points, a mathematically unbeatable score, and first place out of five teams.


Mogg and Trinity Catholic put up 47 points, placing second. Christ Classical was third with 92 points.


Miles and Minutes, LLC, of Tallahassee timed and scored the 2023 Wakulla County Cross-Country Meet.

Tyler Godwin and Megan Churchill demonstrate cross-country dominance at the Freedom 5K

Is the Paul Hoover Memorial Freedom 5K a cross-country race?


That's not a straightforward question. The race starts and finishes on pavement, but most of the 3.1-mile course is unpaved. The competitors don't dash across meadows or leap streams or slog through mud, but they do race along trails in Wakulla Springs State Park, circle a sinkhole, and test their footing on sand and gravel. The race is hosted by the Wakulla High Cross-Country Boosters and named in memory of Wakulla High cross-country coach Paul Hoover. Additionally, on Saturday morning, 24 June 2023, the top honors at the tenth annual Freedom 5K went to cross-country runner Tyler Godwin. Godwin, who has been racing cross-country for three years at Bluffton High, won the race in 17:13. Megan Churchill, about to start her junior year as a harrier for the Flagler College Saints, was the first woman in the race, placing eleventh overall in 20:32.


Right behind Godwin at 17:29, another harrier was runner-up--Henry Lewis, a rising junior at Wakulla High and the ace of his school's cross-country team. Leonardo Canete of Tallahassee was the first master runner in the race, coming in third overall in 17:36.


Megan Churchill's two years as a Flagler Saint weren't her only cross-country experience. As a schoolgirl in Tallahassee, Churchill had put in two seasons of racing in middle school and four more years in high school. There was one gap in her resume, though.


"It was my first time racing the Paul Hoover 5K," said Churchill. "I'm glad I got to do it!"


Nevertheless, Churchill's 20:32 put her across the finish line before more than a few Freedom 5K veterans. For instance, women's runner-up Brittney Barnes had been the seventh woman in the 2018 Freedom 5K. In 2023 Barnes was seventeenth overall in 21:14. Behind Barnes, Isabella Laughton, a rising junior on the Wakulla high cross-country squad, was third in the women's standings and eighteenth overall in 21:27. The women's runner-up in the 2022 race, Laughton was racing in her fourth Freedom 5K. Ruffian Tyner was the first woman master and the eighth female finisher, 35th overall in 24:01.


182 athletes finished the Wakulla High Cross-Country Boosters' tenth annual Paul Hoover Freedom 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed the race.

Chris O'Kelley and Katie Sherron ran great on the gravel at the Freedom 5K

South of Tallahassee, Florida at Wakulla Springs State Park, there was a break in the summer heat on Saturday morning, 25 June 2022. Blame it on overnight rain. Whatever the reasons, Chris O'Kelley took advantage of the slightly less toasty weather to throw down a 17:17, winning the Wakulla High Cross-Country Boosters' ninth annual Paul Hoover Freedom 5K. Dr. Katie Sherron was the first woman in the race, placing fourth overall in 18:35.


Leonardo Canete had run the race in 2021; he took the lead shortly after the start in 2022. Chris O'Kelley had never run the race before; he passed Canete about half a mile into the run. O'Kelley, seeing the course for the first time, wasn't aware that most of the race was out-and-back on a two-rut gravel road leading to Cherokee Sink.


"I thought it was going to go out onto the Ultra course [State Road 61] when we first started, which would’ve been a little better footing," recalled O'Kelley. "But I enjoyed the trail more than I would’ve enjoyed the road."


O'Kelley also enjoyed leading for four kilometers, crossing the finish line in a winning 17:17--the third fastest time ever recorded on the rugged course. Canete was the first master runner in the race, taking second overall in 17:59. Henry Lewis, an incoming frosh on the Wakulla High cross-country team, ran 18:34 for third.


At 18:35, master runner Katie Sherron was just a couple of steps behind Lewis at the finish line.


"Henry pushed me the whole way," commented Sherron. "Sadly, I was outkicked."


Outkicked she may have been, but her 18:35 was still the fastest time ever run by a woman on the course. The previous best was a 19:10 run by Amy Hines in the 2018 race; Sherron bettered that by over half a minute. In 2015, Sherron had become the first woman to break 20:00 in the Freedom 5K. Her 2022 performance made her the first woman to crack 19:00 in the race.


Isabella Laughton was second in the women's standings, coming in seventeenth overall in 21:22. Laughton is a rising sophomore on the Wakulla High cross-country team. Master runner Laura Reina edged Analecia Ferrell and Lana Hawkins for third in the women's division--Reina 31st overall in 23:52, Ferrell second in 23:52, and Hawkins 33rd in 23:54. Ferrell and Hawkins both run cross-country for Wakulla High, where Ferrell is about to start her junior year and Hawkins her sophomore year.


159 athletes finished the Wakulla High Cross-Country Boosters' ninth annual Paul Hoover Freedom 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed the race.

Brock Granberg and Liliana Lewis roll at a rocky Freedom 5K

Back in Boulder, Colorado, Brock Granberg wrestled for Fairview High, recording a 31-7 record his senior year. Granberg also ran cross-country for Fairview, leading his team to fifth-place in the 2019 Colorado State Championships while running sub-17:00 for 5K on a course 6,000 feet above sea level. It was that distance running skill that was on display at Wakulla Springs, Florida on Saturday, 26 June 2021. That morning, Granberg won the eighth annual Paul Hoover Freedom 5K by nearly a minute, running 17:07. Liliana Lewis, a rising sophomore on the Wakulla High cross-country team, was first in the women's standings with a 21:12, coming in twentieth overall.

The Freedom 5K doesn't meet everyone's definition of cross-country, but it certainly meets someon's definition of cross-country. After starting on pavement in Wakulla Springs State Park, the course takes the runners into the forest on a two-rut road, heading for Cherokee Sink. After making a loop around the Sink near the halfway point of the race, the runners return the way they came. In the first years of the race, the road was characterized by the deep sand of Wakulla County. More recently, the road has been covered with gravel.


"The gravel made it difficult, but it was a good course," said Granberg.

As the winner, he had every reason to like the route. Granberg was already leading the field entering the forest, and he only got farther ahead during the trip to Cherokee Sink and back. His winning 17:07 was the second-fastest mark recorded at the Freedom 5K during the eight-year history of the race.


Tallahassee, Florida master runner Leonardo Canete placed runner-up to Granberg, running 18:04. In the closing stages of the race, Jaden Callaghan ran down Mickey Moore to take third, 18:39 to 18:45. Callaghan is a rising junior on the Wakulla High cross-country team and Moore is a Tallahassee master runner.

Callaghan was one of several Wakulla harriers in the race; the Freedom 5K is hosted by the Wakulla High cross-country team as a fund-raiser for the program. Liliana Lewis, the women's winner at 21:12, was another Wakulla Eagle in the race. Isabella Laughton, second in the women's division, is a future Eagle. Just out of the eighth grade at Wakulla Middle School, Laughton ran 21:56 in the Freedom 5K. Elizabeth Blitch and Marina Whitsell, each anticipating her senior year cross-country season at Wakulla, came in a few steps apart at 22:02 and 22:04, the third and fourth women in the race. Corrine Porcher was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, 38th overall in 24:40.


111 athletes finished the 2021 Paul Hoover Freedom 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed the race.

Harriers Daniel Wiedeman and Meg Ogle run away with the Paul Hoover 5K

Daniel Wiedeman wasn't at the award presentations for the seventh annual Paul Hoover Freedom 5K. A rising senior on the Wakulla High cross-country team, Wiedeman had disappeared shortly after finishing the race. He was out running. Eventually he returned, at a trot.


"That was four extra miles," said Wiedeman.

Mileage like that goes some way toward explaining why it was Wiedeman who won the 3.1-mile race that Saturday morning, 29 June 2019, running 18:31. Dr. Meg Ogle took the women's title, placing fifteenth overall in 21:18


Since 2013, the Freedom Run 5K has been contested each year on the last Saturday in June at Wakulla Springs State Park, south of Tallahassee, Florida. After the tragic death of Wakulla High cross-country coach Paul Hoover in 2017, his name was added to the race. Some of the athletes Hoover had coached were among the early leaders of the 2019 race, including Daniel Wiedeman.

"I started out with Scott Lloyd and Dalton Gray and Travis Parks," said Wiedeman. "Travis led us through two miles. With half a mile left, I had to go."


"It was less than half a mile," said Park, who currently runs for the Truett McConnell University Bears. "I was gaining on him a little on the last stretch."


Wiedeman finished with a 50-meter lead, first in 18:31. Parks took second in 18:42. Stephen Votaw, another rising senior on the Wakulla High team, was third in 18:52. Michael Martinez was the first master runner in the race, fourth overall in 19:06.

"I've run this race every year I've been in high school and one or two years before that," said Wiedeman.


Wiedeman has in fact raced the Freedom Run four times in the last five years, tallying two top-ten finishes in addition to his 2019 win. He has run the race in rain and shine. In past years he ran it on soft sand. This year he ran it on gravel, newly added to the course by Wakulla Springs State Park.


"The gravel was a lot nicer than the sand," said Wiedeman.

The Freedom Run behind him, Wiedeman will be headed into his final cross-country season for Wakulla High. Meg Ogle, the women's champ, also has a cross-country background.


"I ran in college and high school," said Ogle. "The University of Rochester in upstate New York."


However, it was Ogle's high school jersey that she was wearing at the Freedom Run 5K, racing in the colors of the Kittatinny Regional High cross-country team. Ogle did those colors proud that morning, winning the women's division of the five-kilometer race by more than half a kilometer with a 21:18. Emily Smith was second in the women's standings and 27th overall in 23:30. Lilliana Lewis edged Tirzah Votaw for the third woman's spot, 24:16 to 24:17. Lewis and Votaw placed 32nd and 33rd overall. Paula O'Neill was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, 35th overall in 24:29.

183 athletes finished the 2019 Paul Hoover Memorial Freedom Run 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.

Harriers Charlie Kline and Genevieve Printiss excel at Hops And Half Shells

Hops and Half Shells 5K Trail RaceWhen it comes to trivia questions, there's the right answer and there's the factually correct answer. Those two aren't always the same. For instance, say you're competing in a barroom trivia contest. Money is on the line. You're asked, 'when is cross-country season?' You should immediately answer, 'autumn'. That's the right answer. The factually correct answer is a bit more complicated. For the most part, cross-country season in North America is in the autumn. But in Europe, cross-country is a winter sport. The World Cross-Country Championships are always in the spring. In the Tallahassee, Florida area you can find a cross-country race to run in just about any month of the year. For instance, on Saturday morning, 6 April 2019, close to 300 athletes raced south of Tallahassee in Crawfordville, Florida at the fourth annual Hops And Half Shells 5K Cross-Country Race. The fastest in that throng was Charlie Kline of Tallahassee, who won the race in 17:24. Genevieve Printiss was the first woman in the 5K, placing thirteenth overall in 20:27.


Kline finished the Hops And Half Shells 200 meters ahead of the runner up. Less than four months earlier, he had won the 2018 RRCA Florida State Cross-Country Championship race, Gulf Winds Track Club’s eighth annual Tannenbaum Trail Cross-Country Race. Khalil Randell, a first-year distance runner on the Tallahassee Community College cross-country team, placed second behind Kline in 18:08. Scott Billings took third in the race with an 18:32. Billings had formerly run cross-country at Maclay School and at the University of Tampa. Paul Guyas was the fastest master runner in the race, placing seventh overall in 19:59.


The women's champ, Printiss, was also a seasoned cross-country runner, a harrier for Tallahassee Community College with experience racing for Franklin County High. Amanda Sava, a former cross-country runner at Florida Tech and before that Sussex Tech High, finished runner-up to Printiss in the women's standings and sixteenth overall in 20:49. Mia Wiederkehr, another TCC cross-country runner, edged Brittney Barnes for the third women's spot, 20:58 to 21:01. Wiederkehr and Barnes placed eighteenth and nineteenth overall. Stephanie Liles-Weyant was the first woman master and sixth female finisher, 21st overall in 21:42.


The race was held on the grounds of Tallahassee Community College's Wakulla Environmental Institute. The large crowd of runners may have been drawn by their love of cross-country, but the promise of post-race beer and oysters could have had something to do with it. The oysters were raised by the Institute as part of their aquaculture program.


299 athletes finished the 2019 Hops And Half Shells 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed the race.

Many trailed Duane Evans and Madison Sims at the Trail Life 5K

2018 Trail Life 5KBecause of Hurricane Michael, autumn of 2018 was a season of canceled races in the Florida panhandle, and even as far east as Tallahassee. Saturday morning, 17 November 2018, saw a return to the normal in the Tallahassee-area racing calendar. Normal, of course, is ridiculously crowded. There were no fewer than three road races within a short drive of Tallahassee that morning. In the spirit of rebirth after the storm, each was a first-year race. One of those was the inaugural Trail Life 5K, south of Tallahassee in Crawfordville, Florida. Master runner Duane Evans won the 3.1-mile race, covering the distance in 19:50. Madison Sims, a sixth-grader at Fort Braden School, was the first woman in the race, placing third overall in 23:59.


Ten-year-old Grayson Stevens took the runner-up spot in the 5K with a 23:51. Master runner Michael Martin was third in the men's standings and fifth overall in 26:40.


Nancy Johnson was the first woman master and second female finisher, fourth overall in 25:45. Liliana Lewis, a sixth-grader at Wakulla Middle School, placed third on the women's side and sixth overall in 26:52.


The Trail Life 5K was the opening event of Trail Life Crawfordville's second annual Fall Festival. Trail Life Crawfordville is Troop FL-2327 of Trail Life USA, with describes itself as "a Christian Outdoor Adventure, Character, and Leadership Program for boys and young men. Trail Life Crawfordville is serious enough about their 5K to get the course USATF-certified (course number FL18042TY) and to hire professional timing for the race (Miles and Minutes, LLLC, of Tallahassee). 21 athletes finished the first year event on the streets of Crawfordville.
