Cold brew and topless oysters fuel wins by DeVeau and Sherron

Hops and Half Shells 5K Trail RaceThere are folks who will run for the chance to devour a raw oyster, and there are those who will run just as fast in the opposite direction to avoid the opportunity. Both camps agree on the running part, though. So when the Tallahassee Community College's Wakulla Environmental Institute decided to celebrate the college's 50th anniversary on Saturday, 23 April 2016, they included oysters, beer, and a 5K race in the celebration. That race was the Hops and Half Shells 5K, and Tallahassee, Florida athlete Zach DeVeau won it in 17:40. Florida State University economics professor Katie Sherron was the first woman in the 5K, placing thirteenth overall in 21:53. 319 people finished the 3.1-mile race.

The race started and finished at the Wakulla Environmental Institute, which is located in the forest a few miles south of Crawfordville, Florida. It's an area of more trails than streets, so the Hops and Half Shells 5K was a trail race. Trail racing is Vince Molosky's oyster; just three weeks earlier he had won the Draggin' Tail 50K on 31 miles of trails in Torreya State Park. Hunter Phillips was no stranger to the trails, either, as an alumnus of the Wakulla High cross country team. Behind DeVeau, Molosky and Phillips battled for second, with Molosky prevailing 17:54 to 17:56. Joseph Bernardo placed fourth in 18:21, and Tallahassee Community College cross country coach Gary Droze was the first master runner and fifth overall in 18:27.

Less than 50 meters behind Katie Sherron, Meg Ogle was the women's runner-up, coming in fourteenth overall in 22:05. Jocelyn Chan was third in the women's standings and 21st overall in 23:58. Marien DiMacali was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, 26th overall in 25:33.

Proceeds of the inaugural Hops and Half Shells 5K benefit scholarships at Tallahassee Community College. The post-race oysters were farmed by students in TCC's Oyster Aquaculture program, and the beer was from Grasslands Brewing Company and Proof Brewing Company. Gulf Winds Track Club chip timed the race.
