Trevor Sununu and Ann Centner rewrite the Trent 10K record book

"I made all the bagels for this race," said Trevor Sununu. "400 of them. Well, actually thirty baker's dozens."

Sununu was up all night with that project and other baking in the ovens of Panera Bread. But on Saturday morning, 25 January 2020, he took off his apron, put on his running shorts, and headed for Roberts Elementary School for the eleventh annual Trent. After delivering the bagels, Sununu won the 10K race in 33:58, his best time ever for the 6.2-mile distance and a Trent course record. Ann Centner was the first woman in the race, placing third overall in a new Trent 10K women's record of 36:03.

The Trent started as a 5K in 2009. The 10K was added in 2019, with the 5K still part of the program. The 2020 running of both races started from Roberts Elementary School a few minutes after the scheduled starting time of 8:30 AM. Trevor Sununu, entered in the 10K, shared the lead with Christian Minor, entered in the 5K. The two separated during the second mile, Minor far ahead of the rest of the 5K runners, and Sununu similarly well ahead of the 10K field.

"I paced it right for a change," said Sununu. "I ran under 5:00 for the last mile instead of the first mile."

The other competitors far behind, pacing was Sununu's only worry. He returned to the school and the finish line in a winning 33:58, crushing the Trent record of 37:37 established by Brad Busboom in the 2019 race. Chris O'Kelley was also under the old record, placing second overall in 35:14. Tony Guillen was the first master runner in the 10K, placing third in the men's standings and fourth overall in 38:41.

In the women's competition, Ann Centner never trailed.

"I was just trying to run relaxed today," said Centner. "The goal race in next week, the Tallahassee Half Marathon."

Relaxed running gave Centner the women's title with a 36:03, not far off her personal best of 35:51, posted less than two months earlier at the 2019 Tallahassee Turkey Trot. Centner's performance was more than four minutes better than the previous best mark by a woman at the Trent, the 40:40:07 logged by Lisa Johnson in the 2019 race. In fact, Centner's pace for the 10K was faster than the women's record for the Trent 5K, the 18:49 run by Seeley Gutierrez in 2015.

Brittney Barnes finished runner-up to Centner on the women's side, placing nineteenth overall in 43:23. Katie Sherron, women's champ of the 2016 Trent 5K, was the third woman and 21st overall in the 10K at 44:11. Caitlin Wilkey, a Chiles High cross-country runner and the first woman in the 2017 and 2018 Trent 5K races, placed fourth in the women's standings and 22nd overall in 44:36. Buck Lake Elementary schoolteacher Laura McDermott was the first woman master in the 10K, the fifth female finisher and 29th overall in 45:13.
