At Silver Lake the final laps are victory laps for Mazziotta and Martin

Gulf Winds Track Club staged the 41st annual Salute to Prefontaine 5K near Silver Lake, west of Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday morning, 24 September 2016. During the four decades of history of the event, the Prefontaine Classic high school meet has been a sometimes feature of the program. Among the years that the high school ran at Silver Lake were 2004 to 2007 and 2014 to 2016. Whatever the future of the Prefontaine Classic, high school graduation would ensure that 2016 was the last time that seniors Jake Mazziotta and Haleigh Martin would run at the meet. They each made that final act count, though. Maclay's Mazziotta won the boys' 5K race in 17:54, while Martin went 20:58 to win the girls' 5K.

The boys ran first, starting just after 9:30 AM. The course was twice around a circuit of the Silver Lake Recreation Area, a tour that included sand, hills, narrow paths, and views of trees downed by Hurricane Hermine earlier in the month. It wasn't a fast course by any means, but Maclay's Jake Mazziotta appreciated the ruggedness.


"I like the fact that you don't have to worry about time, that it's purely about the competition," said Mazziotta. "It was definitely harder this year."

Mazziotta helped to make it harder for his competition, setting the pace for the field during the first lap around the course. Gatlin Nennstiel of Aucilla Christian and Maclay's Clay Milford followed him closely on the first lap, but not so closely on the second. Mazziotta opened up a gap during the second time around, going on to win by over 80 meters in 17:54. Nennstiel was second in 18:13, and Milford held off Wakulla's Bryce Cole to take third, 18:19 to 18:21.


Cole was just the first of a wave of Wakulla runners, though. The boys from Wakulla County also took the next three places, with Scott Lloyd fifth in 18:40, Caleb Wiedeman sixth in 18:57, and Dylan Peebles seventh in 18:57. Maclay's Gannon Hundley placed eighth in 19:02, but then Dalten Park (9th, 19:06) finished the scoring for Wakulla. Wakulla also took the next two places--Dalton Gray was tenth in 19:08 and Alex Smythe eleventh in 19:08--putting both its pushers ahead of Maclay's fourth runner. The result was the Wakulla was first with 31 points, and Maclay second with 37. Aucilla Christian was third with 77 points.

Mazziotta wasn't quite clear on how many years he had raced at Silver Lake. "I think this is my third or fourth time."


Haleigh Martin was similarly unsure. "Three, I think."

Three was the correct number. Martin had won her first Prefontaine Classic in 2014, with Maclay's Caroline Willis taking second. In 2015 Willis had taken first with Martin relegated to runner-up. In 2016 the two seniors were back at Silver Lake for a final showdown at the Prefontaine Classic.


Martin grabbed the lead on the first loop. Willis was close through the first mile, but Martin widened the margin on the second time around. Martin was more than 70 meters ahead when she crossed the finish line first in 20:58. Willis was second in 21:17.

"That was definitely not really fun," said Martin. "The hill at the Cougar Challenge was worse but the sand out there today was tiring. I stumbled a couple of times."


After Willis, two more Maclay Marauders took the next two places, with Molly McCann third in 21:30 and Lindsay James fourth in 22:23. the Maclay girls wrapped up their scoring with Rachel Rumana placing eighth in 24:05 and Kenzie Mazziotta ninth in 24:20. After that the Marauders had a mathematically unbeatable total of 26 points and the 2016 Prefontaine Classic title. Two points separated the next three teams, with Aucilla Christian second with 77 points, Wakulla third with 78, and John Paul II Catholic fourth with 79.

Kiros and Sack lead a celebration of cross country Madness

In a duel of two Tallahassee, Florida master runners, Geb Kiros edged Gary Droze in Gulf Winds Track Club's annual Miller Landing Madness 8K on Saturday morning, 20 August 2016. Dr. Kiros, a biostatistics professor at Florida A & M University, ran the five-mile cross country course through Tallahassee's Phipps Park in 31:06. Droze, the coach of the Tallahassee Community College women's cross country team, ran 31:12. Katie Sack was the first woman finisher in the race, placing 21st overall in 37:19.


"I think the water is deeper this year," commented Bill Lott, one of the race directors.

The water was a shallow pool built for the Red Hills Horse Trials. For years Tom Perkins, another race director, had coveted some sort of watery obstacle for the Miller Landing Madness. One year he had brought in several bucket loads but it wasn't enough water, producing only a small muddy patch on the course. In 2008 Tropical Storm Faye had drenched the area but that was too much water, and the race had to be postponed. In 2014, though, the water hazards for the Red Hills Horse Trials were in place. Perkins had a truck load of water brought in to fill one of the pools, and the runners found themselves splashing through a puddle. Since then the water obstacle became a fixture. Running twice around a loop, the 8K runners and the 5K runners get wet twice. The 3K competitors have a single loop course and only hit the water once. The first time through the water comes one mile into the race, close to where Geb Kiros took the lead in this year's 8K.

"I stayed with the 5K lead group till the nasty water," said Kiros. "After that the 5K and 8K races separate and I was by myself. I slowed down between miles three and four."


It was a natural place to slow down; the highest spot on the course is between the three and four-mile marks, so there's a lot of uphill on the way there. Still, Gary Droze had closed to within six seconds of Kiros by the four-mile mark. Kiros held on during the last mile, though, finishing the five-mile race first in 31:06. Still six seconds back, Droze was runner-up in 31:12. Master runner Terance Keenan placed third in 32:29 and Jim Halley was fourth in 32:37.

Unlike Kiros, Katie Sack never had to look back over her shoulder to check on her competition. Sack won the women's division by more than half a kilometer, running 37:19. Jocelyn Chan took second in the women's standings, placing 29th overall in 39:57. Laura Sellati was the third woman and 34th overall in 41:00. Deborah Congdon edged Monica Judd for top woman master honors, 41:14 to 41:21. Congdon was the fourth female finisher and 36th overall; Judd was the fifth woman and 38th overall.

Many of the area's high school cross country runners use the Miller Landing Madness 5K as a pre-season race, which partially explains why the first 29 finishers were 18 or younger. The fastest of these was Maclay senior Jake Mazziotta, who won the race in 18:03. Lincoln High junior Clayton Carlson inched ahead of Maclay sophmore Clay Milford to take second, both runners clocked in 18:14. Wakulla senior Bryce Cole was right behind them, fourth in 18:15.


Alyson Churchill took the women's title, placing tenth overall in 19:20. An incoming frosh at Lincoln High, Churchill finished well ahead of athletes with more high school racing experience, such as Maclay senior Caroline Willis and Wakulla High senior Haleigh Martin. Willis, the defending women's champion in the race, was second in the women's standings and 24th overall in 20:46. Martin was the third female finisher and 25th overall in 20:52.


"I did not see Caroline at all before the race but I thought that she was most likely there," explained Churchill. "I had no idea how far behind me the next girl was or if there were any girls in front of me. I just tried to run as well and fast as I could."


That was well enough for Churchill to finish atop the women's standings with a lead of more than 300 meters.

The Miller Landing Madness 5K gives you a sneak peek at the upcoming high school cross country season, and the 3K does the same for middle school cross country. Weston Blake, a Swift Creek Middle School student, won the 3K race in 11:41, leading almost the entire 1.87 miles. Another Swift Creek athlete, Connor Edwards, edged Patrick Koon for the runner-up spot, both runners clocked in 11:51.

Lindsay James of Maclay School was the first female finisher and eleventh overall in 12:52. Paige Churchill of Swift Creek took second in the female standings and sixteenth overall in 13:18. Camille Resavage (19th, 13:30) was the third female finisher in the race.

Caroline Willis and Jake Mazziotta lead a Maclay sweep of District 3-1A

If you're at a cross-country event at Maclay School in Tallahassee, the stormwater retention pond is going to come up in conversation. The District 3-1A Meet on Tuesday morning, 28 October 2014, was no exception.


"We were in the right place at the right time," declared Maclay Coach Gary Droze. "I usually have to run the hose to get some water in there, but they filled it for the adventure race last weekend. And then the fire department came yesterday and tested the hydrants on campus."


The course takes the runners through the pond three times, and it was starting to sound like it would be three trips through a quagmire. It had been dry in Tallahassee, though, and all that watery input had left the pond only slightly more moist than a heavy dew on the grass.


But athletes don't come to the District meet to play in the mud, anyway. They come to earn a spot in the Regional championship. Four teams had shown up for each race in District 3-1A this year, but only three would qualify. Like a game of musical chairs, when the running was over someone was going to be left out.


The Maclay girls weren't going to be the team without a Region 1 seat. Half a kilometer into the girls' 5K race, Maclay runners already held the first six places, led by defending district champion Caroline Willis. No one caught the Marauder top five. Willis went on to get another District title in 20:45. The next four places also went to Maclay, with sophomore Molly McCann taking second in 20:54, frosh Jainey Coates third in 21:44, sixth-grader Lindsay James fourth in 21:53, and junior Kathleen Whitworth fifth in 22:00. John Paul II sophomore Julia Travis took sixth n 22:09, but Maclay already had a perfect score of 15 points and the win. Aucilla Christian was second with 65 points and John Paul II third with 66, both teams joining Maclay in advancing to the Region 1 meet.

It had been foggy during the girls' race, but it was bright and sunny by 10:00 AM when the boys started. Aucilla Christian sophomore Gatlin Nennstiel went right to the front, building up a lead of nearly 50 meters during the first of three trips around the course. During the second loop, though, Maclay sophomore Jake Mazziotta came after Nennstiel. Mazziotta had outrun Nennstiel at the Cougar Challenge, Bearcat Invitational, and Pre State, but only ten days earlier Gatlin had run four seconds faster than Mazziotta at Aucilla Christian's Warrior Rampage. As Mazziotta closed on Nennstiel, the two left the rest of the field far behind. One of them would be District 3 champion.


With about a kilometer to go, Mazziotta overtook Nennstiel, then began to pull away. The Aucilla Christian Warrior never folded his tent, but Mazziotta continued strong to the finish, winning the race in 17:25. Nennstiel was second in 17:31. The next four places belonged to Maclay Marauders, with junior George Gwynn coming in third in 18:32, frosh Daniel Sweeney fourth in 18:39, frosh Seth Kemeny fifth in 18:43, and junior George Escobar sixth in 18:44. It's impossible to beat a score of 19 points; the District 3 title went to Maclay. Aucilla Christian was second with 57 points, and North Florida Christian scored 78 to take third place and the remaining Region 1 qualifying spot.


The teams that advanced will race next on Saturday morning, 8 November 2014, in the Region 1-1A Championship at Sunnyhill Farm in Tallahassee. From the Region 1 meet, six teams will earn a position on the starting line of the State Finals at Apalachee Regional Park on 15 November 2014.
