Kent and Keene capture the Tasty Tiger

Hungry TigerRacing up and down the ridges along Rock Creek, Sean Kent ran 19:06 to win the fifth annual Tasty Tiger Trot 5K in Dothan, Alabama on Saturday morning, 22 July 2017. Eden Keene was the first woman in the race, placing eighth overall in 23:05. 71 athletes finished the 5K.

Kent, a recent alumnus of the Troy University track and cross-country teams, had won the Tasty Tiger 5K in 2014, when the race was still a cross-country run. But in 2016, the first year that the Tasty Tiger moved to roads, Kent had finished fourth in a race won by Donalsonville, Georgia master runner Myles Gibson. Both Kent and Gibson were on the starting line in 2017. This time, Kent came out on top, finishing 140 meters ahead of Gibson. Gibson was second in 19:39. Master runner Bob Walker was third in 20:10, and Will Scott, a sophomore on the Headland High cross-country team, was fourth in 20:40.

Kate Smith, a frosh year cross-country runner at Dothan High, was second in the women's standings and seventeenth overall in 25:25. Roxanne Cook was the third woman and 23rd overall in 26:40. Kristi Holland was the top woman master and sixth female finisher, 27th overall in 27:23.

The Tasty Tiger 5K is an annual fundraiser for the Dothan High cross-country team.

When Sean Kent is a repeat winner, he's really a repeat winner

Brian Dowling Memorial 5K RunHere's a story that has an eerie, time-travel feeling to it. Maybe the SyFy channel would be interested.

A runner wins a cross-country race in his hometown, finishing 31 seconds ahead of the next runner. It's an annual race, but he doesn't return the next year, or the next. The years roll by. Then, after a six-year absence, he returns to the race and wins again, by the same 31 second margin. His time is even the same both years. Is he caught in a time loop? Are we caught in a time loop?

The runner was Sean Kent and the race was the Brian Dowling Memorial 5K Trail Race in Dothan, Alabama during 2011 and 2017. Admittedly, Kent didn't log exactly the same winning times both years; he ran 18:50 in 2011 and 18:49 in 2017. Or maybe his performances actually were the same, and the one-second difference is a timing error.

Uncanny.

Sean Kent did win the 17th annual Brian Dowling 5K in Westgate Park on Saturday morning, 3 June 2017, though. And although he was a junior on the Northview High cross-country team when he ran the race in 2011, in 2017 Kent's win came just three weeks after he ran his last race for Troy University, a 10:28.89 in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the Sun Belt Conference Championships. There was no loop; time marches on.

Jason Teitloff was second in the Dowling 5K, running 19:20. Will Scott, a rising-sophomore on the Headland High cross-country team, placed third in 21:21. Dale Thomas was the first master runner, placing fourth overall in 21:37. Thomas was also in that 2011 race.

Charlotte Haberstroh was the first woman in the race, placing tenth overall in 26:43. Kristi Holland was the top woman master and second female finisher, thirteenth overall in 27:29. Master runner Carol Goguen placed third in the women's standings and 22nd overall in 32:11.

41 athletes finished the 2017 Brian Dowling Memorial 5K Trail Race. The event has been presented annually by the Dothan Runners Club since 2001.

In 2000 Dothan Runners Club member Brian Dowling was killed
during a training run, struck by a hit-and-run driver. The
Woofstock 5K was started in his memory in 2001. In 2002 DRC
officially renamed the race the Brian Dowling Memorial 5K.

Kent and Sexton take titles at Tasty Tiger Trot Trail Race

Hungry TigerIn 2013 Sean Kent finished third at the inaugural Tasty Tiger Trot 5K Trail Race in Dothan, Alabama. Kent spent the following year as a distance runner at Troy University, running cross country and track for the Trojans. On Saturday morning, 26 July 2014, he was back in Westgate Park for the second annual Tiger Trot. This time around he ran 10 seconds faster, and his 17:27 was fast enough to win the race. Fort Rucker's David Seymour was runner-up for the second year in a row, posting a 17:45. Donalsonville master runner Myles Gibson edged Byron Critchfield for third place, 18:20 to 18:22.

Dothan master runner Missy Sexton was the first woman in the second annual Tiger Trot, placing 10th overall in 22:32. More than 100 meters behind Sexton, Carmel Cammack was second in the women's standings, finishing 14th overall in 23:06. Anna Bergmark (18th, 23:18) was third in the women's competition and master runner Margaret Winkler (19th, 23:31) was fourth.

93 athletes finished the race. The Tasty Tiger Trot 5K Trail Run was a fundraiser for the Dothan High School cross country program.

Sean Kent shatters Hog Wild 15K record

Sean KentIn the 1976 Olympic marathon in Montreal, Frank Shorter ran 2:10:45, almost a minute and a half faster than the great Abebe Bikila's 1964 Olympic marathon record of 2:12:12. The performance didn't earn Shorter either the record or a gold medal, though, because Waldemar Cierpinski had already finished the race nearly a minute earlier, running 2:09:55.

These things happen in athletics.

Likewise, in the 2013 Hog Wild 15K in Dothan, Alabama, Donalsonville master runner Myles Gibson ran 58:26, just under Cedric Gillette's 2012 course record of 58:41. But Gibson didn't get either a win or a new record, because almost two minutes earlier Sean Kent had crossed the finish line in 56:34.

StartBack in November, a little over two months before the 26 January 2013 Hog Wild 15K, Sean Kent had run his last high school cross-country race, placing 30th at the Alabama State Meet for Dothan Northview High. Kent may be done with high school cross country, but at Hog Wild the Northview senior served notice that his distance-running career is far from over. Shortly after 2:00 PM, when more than 300 athletes on Museum Avenue started the 31st annual Hog Wild, Kent was leading the race in a big way. Some of the runners were doing a 5K rather than the 15K--surely anyone going that much faster than the rest of the field was in the shorter event? But at the turnaround for the 5K runners, Kent kept going. Kent reached the five kilometer mark of the race a minute ahead of Myles Gibson, who was holding down second place. On the flat stretches of the course as well as on the ferocious hills of Montezuma Avenue, Kent continued to pull away. Back on Museum Avenue Kent turned on a final sprint toward the finish line in front of the Depot on Main, dashing across in a new course record of 56:34. Myles Gibson finished runner-up in 58:26, the second-best Hog Wild time ever. Darrick Coriz, a member of the National Guard Marathon Team, placed third in 61:07.

Jeanne DavisEnterprise, Alabama's Jeanne Davis led the women's field at 5K, over a minute ahead of Kayla Fox of Dothan. Davis lengthened that lead to a 70:50 to 73:29 win over Fox. It was a much narrower margin in the master women's competition, with Dothan Carolyn Houston prevailing over Jill Wofsey of Alford, Florida 77:09 to 77:22.

135 runners finished the 2013 Hog Wild 15K.

Mike Musiowski placed second in 18:31, while Gilette was third in 18:42. Dothan's Lindsay Sport outran Ashlee Romani 22:45 to 23:11 for the women's 5K title.

No sand, no waves, but wins for Kent and Lichner

Westgate Park Trail, Dothan, AlabamaWhen you have the best cross-country course in lower Alabama, it only makes sense to use it. That is exactly what Dothan has in Westgate Park's Larry and Rona Dykes Trail, and Dothan certainly uses it. It's a rare weekend when there is not a race or a high school cross-country meet on the trail. Most recently, on Saturday morning, 25 August 2012, the Dothan Runners Club staged the annual Life Is A Beach 5K on the trail.

Northview High senior Sean Kent repeated as the top male in the race, this time winning the 3.1-mile event outright with a 18:26. Kent finished nearly 200 meters ahead of the runner up, Drew Ackles, who crossed the line in 19:03. The third-place finisher was the top master runner in the race, Jeff Dasinger. Val Lichner of Bonifay, Florida was the first female and fastest female master, placing 30th overall in 24:23.

Kent and Romani catch titles at Pilgrim Chase 5K

Northview High's Sean Kent ended his junior year cross-country season on 12 November 2011 with a 27th place finish at the Alabama state championships. Two weeks later, though, on 26 November 2011, he was running another cross-country race--the Dothan Runners Club's Pilgrim Chase 5K on the Larry and Rona Dykes Trail in Westgate Park. You'd think Kent would be taking a break after the long season, but that's what cross-country runners do--they run cross-country.

At the Pilgrim Chase 5K Kent ran cross-country particularly well, winning by over 300 meters in 17:47, an improvement on both his time (18:21) and his place (2nd) in the 2010 Pilgrim Chase. Maj. Sean Keefe of Fort Rucker was runner-up in 19:02, while the top master spot and third place went to Theron Carter of Brundidge, Alabama in 19:22. Finishing immediately after Carter was the top woman in the race, Ashlee Romani. Ft. Rucker's Romani clocked 20:02 for the 5K tour of Westgate Park. The women's runner-up and top woman master in the race was Melissa Unrath (10th, 21:11) of Enterprise, Alabama.

112 athletes completed the 2011 Pilgrim Chase 5K, significantly more than the 73 who finished the race in 2010. Cross-country running lovers will get one more chance this year to race on the Larry and Rona Dykes Trail; on 31 December 2011 the Last Gasp 5K Trail Run starts at 9:00am CT in Westgate Park.
