Myles Gibson rides again at the Trot With S.W.A.T.

Racing 6.2 miles through the neighborhood streets on the west side of Dothan, Alabama, Myles Gibson posted a winning 20:10 in the thirteenth annual Trot With S.W.A.T. 10K on Saturday morning, 21 September 2019. Master runner Anna Haberzettl was the first woman in the 10K, placing thirteenth overall in 49:26.


Gibson, a Donalsonville, Georgia master runner, has now won the Trot With S.W.A.T. four times, including the first race in 2007. There was a Trot With S.W.A.T. 5K concurrent with the longer race, and Gibson's 40:10 was run at a faster average pace than anyone in the 5K that morning. Michael Warner, runner-up to Gibson in 43:43, ran faster than all but the winner of the 5K. Warner was formerly a standout on the Enterprise High cross-country team. Master runner Richie Fernandez took third in 43:53.


Amber Hayghe finished a few steps ahead of Molly Crawford to take second in the women's standings, 50:58 to 51:02. Hayghe and Crawford were fifteenth and sixteenth overall.

Myles Gibson may have won the Trot With S.W.A.T. 10K four times, but master runner Dale Thomas has won the Trot With S.W.A.T. 5K four times in a row (plus a 10K win in 2014). Thomas' latest win was in the 2019 race, where he finished more than 400 meters ahead of the next runner in 20:49. Eleven-year-old Eli Butler took second in the 5K with a 22:44. Dothan master runner Mike Houston was third in 22:53.


Natalie Warner has her own streak going in the Trot With S.W.A.T. 5K. Warner, the ace of the Enterprise High girls' cross-country team, won the women's 5K title at the Trot for the second year in a row, running 23:11 and placing fourth overall. Carolyn Houston of Dothan was the first woman master in the 5K and the second female finisher, seventh overall in 23:30. Elizabeth Gunter nabbed third in the women's division, placing eleventh overall in 26:05.

Chris Boyle saddles up at the Trot With S.W.A.T. 10K

Finishing 800 meters ahead of his nearest challenger, Chris Boyle won Dothan, Alabama's twelfth annual Trot With S.W.A.T. 10K on Saturday morning, 22 September 2018, running 36:25. Kayla Carpenter was the first woman in the race, placing seventh overall in 49:27.


Boyle's winning 36:25 was the third fastest time in Trot With S.W.A.T. history, just 22 seconds off the course record of 36:03 posted in 2013 by David Seymour. Jason Teitloff finished runner-up to Boyle in 39:48. Myles Gibson, the defending champion and three-time winner of the Trot With S.W.A.T. 10K, was the top master runner in the race and third overall in 41:22.


Libby Mills placed second to Carpenter in the women's standings, running 54:16. At 56:25, Kristi Holland was the first woman master and third female finisher.

Myles Gibson didn't get a repeat win in the 2018 Trot With S.W.A.T. 10K, but master runner Dale Thomas certainly did in the 5K. Thomas won the shorter race for the third year in a row, running 20:08--his fastest winning time yet at the event. Thomas is also the only athlete with wins in both the 5K and the 10K at Trot With S.W.A.T.; he took the 10K title in 2014. Tristin Decroo, a senior on the Dothan High cross-country team, took second behind Thomas in 20:40. Blake Granberry was third in 21:57.


Natalie Warner, a frosh-year athlete on the Enterprise High cross-country team, won the women's title in the 5K, placing fourth overall in 22:16. Carolyn Houston, the 2017 Trot With S.W.A.T. 5K women's champ, was the first woman master and second female finisher at 23:53. Macy Benton, a Dothan High junior, was third in the women's standings with a 27:08.

Gibson and Smith gallop to victory at the Trot With S.W.A.T.

The annual Trot With S.W.A.T. 10K was back in Dothan, Alabama's Poplar Head Park on Saturday morning, 23 September 2017, and so was Myles Gibson. Running 39:39, the Donalsonville, Georgia master runner won the race for the second year in a row. Kate Smith took the women's title, placing tenth overall in 49:10.


Gibson was so far ahead of the rest of the field that he might have been getting lonely on the streets of Dothan; by the time he finished the ten-kilometer race he had a lead of nearly a kilometer and a half on the next runner. It was Gibson's third Trot With S.W.A.T. win; in addition to the 2016 race he had also won the inaugural Trot in 2007.


Eric Bernard was second in the 10K in 46:23. Master runner Bernardo Defarro was third overall in 46:33.


Tabatha Murdock edged Krystal Sheerun for the runner-up spot in the women's standings, 55:03 to 55:04. Murdock and Sheerun placed nineteenth and twentieth overall. Kristi Holland was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, 21st overall in 55:44.

The Trot With S.W.A.T. 10K has been around since 2007, but the 5K wasn't added to the event till 2009. Master runner Dale Thomas won the shorter race for the second year in a row in 2017, running 20:13. Richie Fernandez was second in 21:25, and master runner Mark Nichols third in 22:25.


Master runner Carolyn Houston was the women's champion in the 5K, placing fifth overall in 23:37. Rebecca Jewell was the women's runner-up and eighth overall in 25:14. Rachel David was third in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 26:26.

Master runners have their day at the 'Stache Dash

Saturday, 14 February 2015 was a morning for the master runners at Westgate Park in Dothan, Alabama. That's when Enterprise, Alabama, master runner Dale Thomas won the Dothan Runners' 'Stache Dash 5K Trail Run in 21:15, and Midland City master runner Freda Stewart won the women's title, placing 12th overall in 27:10. 41 athletes finished the 3.1-mile cross-country run on Westgate Park's Larry and Ronna Dykes Trail.


Brooks Newell was runner-up in the race with a 21:40, while Julio Garcia took third in 22:03. Chris Fox was the second female finisher, placing 14th overall in 27:36. Diane Calhoun was third in the women's standings, 15th overall in 28:37.


The race was the Dothan Runners' Club's first ever 'Stache Dash, although it was same time of year as the club's 2014 Winter Olympics 5K Trail Run.

Thomas and Parrish triumph on the trail at Brian Dowling 5K

Finishing nearly 700 meters ahead of the next runner, Dale Thomas won the annual Brian Dowling Memorial 5K Trail Run on Saturday morning, 10 May 2014. The Taylor, Alabama, master runner covered the 3.1-mile cross-country course through Dothan's Westgate Park in 20:32. Dothan High incoming frosh Bradley Taylor edged out David Forrester for second, 23:52 to 23:56.


Dothan's CJ Parrish finished a few strides ahead of master runner Kristina Bennett to take the women's title 24:45 to 24:50. The two runners were seventh and eighth overall. Kimberly Riddle was third in the women's standings, coming in 19th overall in 17:05.


69 athletes finished the 2014 Brian Dowling Memorial 5K.

Intestinal fortitude on display at the Gut Run

For 2013, Digestive Health Specialists of Dothan, Alabama added a 10K to their second annual Gut Run. The original 5K option was still there, but now there was also a longer, 6.2-mile choice--which is a lot of trail running. The NCAA men's cross-country championship is contested at ten kilometers, but most of the races preceding the 10K championship are shorter, 8K or less. It takes a lot of, well, guts to run 10K on trails.


Those figurative guts are not what where the name of the Gut Run comes from, though. The Gut Run is about the actual anatomical gut, and the race is held to promote awareness of colorectal cancer while raising money for the American Cancer Society. My friend at Fight Colorectal Cancer would be interested.


Moving from non-profits to athletics, on Saturday, 16 March 2013, two dozen runners took advantage of the opportunity to race two loops around the Larry and Rona Dykes Trail in Dothan's Westgate Park. Donalsonville, Georgia master runner Myles Gibson was easily the fastest of that field, completing the course in 40:46. Following Gibson across the finish line almost five minutes later was the runner-up and first female, Abby Rogers of Dothan. Rogers's time for the 10K was 45:22. The third finisher and second-place male was Joe Hwang of Madison, Alabama, who ran 45:57. Just behind Hwang, in a duel of Dothan master runners, Daryl Shapiro held off Dave Geraci for fourth place, 46:07 to 46:11.

94 athletes decided that once around Westgate Park was enough running for a Saturday morning and competed in the 5K. Dothan master runner Dale Thomas put up a 21:26 to win the shorter race. Nine-year-old Liana Shapiro took first female honors, finishing seventh overall in 25:09.
