Travis Boltjes and Keegan Welch were blazing at Chipley's Hot Trot

When athletes talk about the annual Panhandle Watermelon Festival Hot Trot 5K in Chipley, Florida, they don't usually mention that the course is absolutely flat. I've never heard anyone talk up the fact that the runners only have to negotiate six turns during the whole 3.1 miles of the race. There are compliments. "It wasn't as hot this year," is typical.

But neither heat nor humidity were barriers to Travis Boltjes at the 43rd annual Hot Trot on Saturday morning, 25 June 2022. A Panama City, Florida master runner, Boltjes won the 5000-meter race by nearly 900 meters, running 16:56. Keegan Welch, a harrier on the Chipola College cross-country team, was the first woman in the race, edging Mallory Corbin for that top spot 26:42 to 26:43.

Behind Boltjes, Allen Miller took second at 21:40. Alexander Maric came in third in 21:50.

When Keegan Welch and Mallory Corbin finished their 26:42-26:43 duel for the women's title, they had placed fourteenth and fifteenth overall. Valerie Hein was the third female finisher, sixteenth overall in 28:33.

55 athletes finished the 2022 Hot Trot 5K. The race is the opening event of the Saturday festivities of the North Florida Watermelon Festival.

Tyler Goatley beats Ethan Mines 16:10 to 16:11 in a hot race at the Hot Trot

Washington-Holmes Technical CenterThe Hot Trot 5K is often a fast race. Less frequently, it's a close race. That's not to say you won't ever see close competition in the annual Chipley, Florida event. In 2012, Jordan Green and Shayne Fawcett went down to the wire, with Green taking the title 17:21 ro 17:23. On Saturday morning, 29 June 2019, the 41st annual Hot Trot 5K was even closer. Tyler Goatley crossed the finish line only just ahead of Ethan Mines for a 16:10 to 16:11 victory. The women's competition was even tighter, with Jessica Ludwig edging Carmen Hernandez for the win, both runners clocked in 23:27.

Goatley is a distance runner on the cross-country and track teams at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri. Mines was a past champ of the Hot Trot, having won the race in 2016 when he was a cross-country runner at nearby Mosley High School. Mines wasn't the only past champion of the Hot Trot on the course that morning. Jay, Florida master runner Matt Dobson was also racing, a fourteen-time winner of the Hot Trot. Another master runner in the field, Myles Gibson, had won the race in 1997.

Goatley prevailed over them all, outkicking Mines 16:10 to 16:11. Dothan, Alabama's Jason Teitloff took third in 17:33. Dobson was the fastest master runner in the race, placing fourth overall in 18:49. Gibson was not far behind, fifth in 18:59.

After Jessica Ludwig and Carmen Hernandez had concluded their battle for the women's title, placing ninth and tenth overall, Patti Zamyslowski was the third woman across the finish line, twelfth overall in 25:18. Eve Phillips was the first woman master and sixth female finisher, 21st overall in 26:43.

92 athletes finished the 2019 Hot Trot 5K. The race is the opening event of the Saturday festivities of the North Florida Watermelon Festival.

Blazing! Potts and Taylor winners at Hot Trot

Once again the Hot Trot 5K in Chipley, Florida, lived up to its name. On the morning of the 36th annual race, 28 June 2014, it was about 80 °F with 80% relative humidity and hardly a cloud in sight. But Chipola College student Hunter Potts shrugged off the steamy conditions and won the race in 16:20. Victoria Taylor of Dothan, Alabama, a runner on the Chipola College cross-country team, won the women's title in 23:31.

Hunter Potts bolted away from the field as soon as the race started in front of Washington-Holmes Technical Center. A kilometer into the race Potts already had a 75-meter lead and was still moving away. Three runners led the pursuit of Potts at that point, including Myles Gibson of Donalsonville, Georgia. During the second kilometer Gibson dropped the other two athletes. He went on to place second overall, finishing as the first master runner in the race.

The Hot Trot 5K was the opening event of the 58th annual Panhandle Watermelon Festival.

Seymour and Dixon heat the streets at 35th Hot Trot 5K

Hot Trot 5KDavid Seymour is the captain of Fort Rucker's team for the All-Army 10-Miler Race. That doesn't mean that the Staff Sergeant doesn't occasionally run something shorter. For instance, on Saturday morning, 29 June 2013, Staff Sgt. Seymour raced 3.1 miles in 16:36, winning the 35th annual Hot Trot 5K in Chipley, Florida. Kevin Potts, an alumnus of the cross-country squad at nearby Graceville High School, finished runner-up in 17:07. Jay, Florida master runner Matt Dobson, took third in 17:23. A many-time winner of the Hot Trot 5K, Dobson won the race for the 14th time in 2011.

In May Alex Dixon was winning medals at the South Carolina high school track and field championships. But in June the Wren High School distance runner was in Chipley, Florida racing the Hot Trot 5K--racing well enough to win the women's division with a 21:01, placing 11th overall. Right behind Dixon was Lauren Rattan, an alumna of the track team at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Rattan took the second women's spot, finishing 12th overall in 21:09. Stephanie Rose (13th, 21:23) was the third female finisher. Debbie Wittmer (17th, 21:39) of Blakely, Georgia was the fourth female finisher and the first master woman.

The Hot Trot 5K is part of Chipley's annual Panhandle Watermelon Festival. First run in 1979, the race is one of oldest in the Florida Panhandle. Perhaps the oldest, depending on how you want to define the Panhandle.

Green and Johnson cross Georgia to win Chipley's Hot Trot 5K

2012 Hot Trot 5KThere are watermelon festivals and there are watermelon festivals. Chipley, Florida has more than local ambitions, billing their event as the Panhandle Watermelon Festival. I suppose the next step up would be the State Watermelon Festival, which still wouldn't be the International Watermelon Festival of Bayindir, Turkey. In the distant future, when the extraterrestrials show up for the Intergalactic Watermelon Festival, at least we'll know that they aren't here for anything more sinister than a seed-spitting contest. Anyone who comes calling for luscious red fruit can't be thinking about harvesting or enslaving the human race, right?

Jordan GreenBack on a less cosmic scale, Chipley celebrated the 56th annual Panhandle Watermelon Festival this year, which included the 34th annual Hot Trot on Saturday, 23 June 2012, a 5K race that started from Washington-Holmes Technical Center. Tae Ross, a rising senior and distance runner at Bainbridge High School, set the early pace for a crowded lead group. Midway through the second kilometer there were still six runners in the pack shadowing Ross, including Cedric Gillette of Marianna, Trent McDaniel of Sneads, Jesse McGowan of Cottondale, Tim Teat of Daleville, Shayne Fawcett of Bolivar (Tennessee), and Jordan Green of Morgantown (Kentucky). After three kilometers Ross had faded and the lead group was down to four, with Green out front and Fawcett, McGowan, and Gillette in his wake. As Green pushed the pace, Gillette dropped away, and then McGowan. Fawcett, the Tennessee master runner, hung on, staying just a few steps back. But Fawcett stayed a few steps back all the way to the finish line, and Green made it home with the win in 17:21. At 17:23, Fawcett was the runner-up and first master. Marianna High School's McGowan took third in 17:35 and Gillette was fourth in 17:56. Early leader Ross ended up fifth in 18:28.

Brittny JohnsonKristina Bokenfohr and Katrina Bokenfohr of Enterprise (Alabama) High School led the women through the first half of the race, but the second half of the race belonged to Brittny Johnson of Jackson, Tennessee. Running past Blakely (Georgia) master runner Debbie Wittmer and the Bokenfohrs, Johnson sped to a 21:02 win in the women's division. Close to 200 meters back, Kristina Bokenfohr was the female runner up, placing 22nd overall in 21:45. Debbie Wittmer was the third woman in and the first woman master, 23rd overall in 22:07. Katrina Bokenfohr was the fourth female finisher, 26th overall in 22:16.

Johnson just finished her second year at Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tennessee, where her athletic career has included softball and soccer, but not cross country. Well, at least not yet.

Gillette and Lichner blaze to the front in Chipley

Former Marianna High (c/o 1999) cross-country great Cedric Gillette took advantage of some real cross-country season cool weather to romp to a 20:13 victory in the Trailblazer 5K on Saturday morning, 1 October 2011. The 3.1-mile race started and finished at the Washington-Holmes Technical Center on the west side of Chipley, Florida. Well behind Gillette was the runner-up and fastest master of the morning, Marianna's Mark McCarra. The first woman as well as the first woman master was Val Lichner of Graceville, Florida, who edged out Ashley Merritt for the top spot, 25:25 to 25:29.

Gillette took the early lead, with Tyler Williams leading the pursuit. Gillette, though, was in no danger of being caught, and was already 20 seconds ahead after the first kilometer. Williams faded, giving up the second spot to McCarra. Gillette cruised on to win in 20:13, with McCarra following him across the line in 20:50. Williams hung on to finish third while master runner Jimmy Sims took fourth in 22:56. In the women's race, Lichner set the early pace with Merritt not far behind. By halfway through the race Lichner and Merritt had left the rest of the women's field behind, making it a two-woman race. The margin waxed and waned, but while Lichner never broke contact, Merritt never challenged for the lead. Lichner crossed the finish line just four seconds ahead; close, but good enough for the title.

About 25 runners completed the race, which was run on the same 3.1-mile course used for Chipley's Hot Trot 5K. However, the cool October morning was a startling contrast to the sweltering June Hot Trot--the courses may have been the same, but the two races were entirely different. Chipley boy scout Jay Padgett organized the Trailblazers 5K as his Eagle Scout project--similar to Trey's Eagle Trot 5K last year in Bainbridge.

Dobson and Bennett turn the heat on the competition at the Hot Trot

Challen Hyman and Matt DobsonA week later and a hundred miles west from the 2011 Monticello-Jefferson County Watermelon Festival and its Melon Run 5K, Chipley, Florida hosted the Panhandle Watermelon Festival and the 33rd annual Hot Trot 5K on June 25. The 2011 watermelon racing circuit continues.

Jay's Matt Dobson added another Hot Trot 5K title to his collection, winning the Chipley race in 16:37. Dobson was also the fastest master runner in the race. Kristina Bennett of Dothan, Alabama won top woman honors, finishing 26th overall in 22:52. The first woman master was Robin Walters (45th, 25:18) of Panama City, Florida.

Matt DobsonThe race started and finished in front of the Washington-Holmes Technical Center on the west side of Chipley. Almost as soon as the starter called "Go!" Dobson and Challen Hyman went to the front of the field. After a kilometer of racing Hyman and Dobson were still sharing the lead. Ten seconds behind them Lance Jordan, Hyman's cross-country teammate at Panama City Arnold High, was in third. Dobson broke away mid-race, ultimately gaining a margin of nearly 200 meters on Hyman. Hyman ran 17:18 to hang on to the runner-up spot; Jordan took third in 18:10.

Kristina BennettKristina Bennett was not the early leader in the women's competition, and she was no better than fourth when she started the second kilometer of the race. But Bennett moved up through field, and at the end of five kilometers, when it counts, she was in first with a final time of 22:52. The women's runner-up, Laura Pounds of Dothan, was over 100 meters back in 23:25. Rachel Seller (43rd, 25:02) was the third woman in, just ahead of fourth woman and top woman master Robin Walters (45th, 25:18).

In hopes of making the "Hot Trot" a little less hot, the race started at 7:30am CT, half an hour earlier than the starting time in recent years. If numbers are any indication, the runners found the earlier hour agreeable; the field was larger than usual with 132 athletes finishing the 5K. The race started in 1979 as a 10K held in conjunction with Chipley's annual Panhandle Watermelon Festival.
