Ethan Mines goes 16:34, Rory Claussen 20:22 in the Race Judicata 5K

2018 Race Judicata 5KThe last spring semester final exam at the University of Alabama wrapped up 2:00 PM on Friday, 4 May 2018. That left plenty of time for, say, an undergraduate from the Panama City, Florida area to make it home for the Saturday morning start of the 33rd annual Race Judicata 5K--perhaps an undergraduate such as sophomore computer science student Ethan Mines. Mines was certainly at the Race Judicata on 5 May 2018--he won the 5K in 16:34. Twelve-year-old Rory Claussen of the Shaldera Track Club won the women's title for the second year in a row, placing third overall in 20:22. It wasn't quite as fast as the 19:43 Claussen posted at the Worm Gruntin' Festival 5K three weeks earlier, but it was fast enough to get her across the finish line nearly 800 meters ahead of the next runner in the women's competition.

Mines' winning time was the fastest at the Race Judicata since 2010, when Chris Hough won the race in 16:27. At 17:58, the runner-up spot went to Walter Spangler IV--not to be confused with master runner Walter Spangler III, who was seventeenth overall in 24:58. The fastest master runner in the race was Mike O'Brien; O'Brien was fourth overall and third in the men's standings at 21:56. Spencer Claussen of the Shaldera Track Club was the fourth male and fifth overall in 22:36.

Liz Quindon was the runner-up on the women's side, placing thirteenth overall in 24:12. Petra Blevins took third in the women's standings and sixteenth overall in 24:35. Debbie Chitwood was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, nineteenth overall in 25:29.

70 athletes finished the 2018 Race Judicata 5K. The race was hosted by the Bay County Bar Association as a benefit for the Shaldera Track Club of Panama City.

Mosley Dolphins Mines and Swigler repeat at Strides For Scholars

Bay Education FoundationOnce you've won a race, what do you do for an encore?

That was Ethan Mines' problem on Saturday morning, 27 February 2016, at the Strides For Scholars 5K in Panama City, Florida. The Mosley High senior had already won the 2015 edition of the annual race. How do you improve on that? Mines' solution was to not only win the race again, but to also set a new event record of 16:19, breaking the old record of 16:38 set by Jordan Lance in 2013.

Mosley sophomore Ella Swigler came to the starting line with a similar problem; she had won the Strides For Scholars 5K women's title in 2014 and 2015. However, Swigler had already set the women's record for the event, a 19:35 she ran in her first win in 2014. So at the 2016 race, Swigler settled for chalking up her third win in a row in the women's division, placing seventh overall in 21:28.

Mosley wasn't the only Bay County school represented in the 5K. Rutherford High senior Corey Pilson finished second overall, running 17:44. The 3.1-mile race wasn't limited to high school athletes, either. Tracey Burch proved that; the Panama City master runner was third overall in 18:46.

Mosley High senior Erin France edged Kim Allan 23:40 to 23:42 for second in the women's standings; the two athletes placed 17th and 18th overall. Allan was the top woman master in the race.

333 athletes finished the 2016 Strides For Scholars 5K, with another 14 completing a one-mile fun run. The event raises funds to benefit the Take Stock In Children scholarship and mentoring program for local children. The next Strides For Scholars is scheduled for Saturday morning, 25 February 2017.

Ethan Mines and Michaela Ashley were the fastest of the flock at the Ram Run

Rutherford RamWith Alabama's Dothan High adding a bit of interstate flavor, Rutherford's annual Ram Run cross-country meet returned to the Callaway Recreational Center in Springfield, Florida, for a fifth year. Mosley High won the girls title, with Arnold senior Michaela Ashley taking top individual honors in 20:26. In the boys' race Cottondale was the top team while Mosley senior Ethan Mines ran 17:08 for the win.

After an open/junior varsity race at 8:30 AM, the meet got down to business at 9:15 with the high school girls' 5K. Arnold High's Michaela Ashley was still in the same zip code as the rest of the field when she crossed the finish line, but just barely. Ashley was close to 300 meters ahead of the next runner when she finished in a winning 20:26. Mosley sophomore Ella Swigler was second in 21:44, and Rutherford junior Zeana Guirey third in 22:28.

Led by Swigler's runner-up finish, Mosley added points from seniors Erin France (11th, 23:48), Tyra Williams (13th, 23:56), Samantha Stroup (14th, 24:10), and Amy Jones (18th, 25:12) to score 54 points and win the meet. Behind their top scorer, eighth-grader Macy Benton (4th, 22:35), the Dothan girls bettered Rutherford by a single point, 81 to 82, to take second in the eight-team field.

Barnes was soon joined by the rest of Cottondale's scorers--junior Michael Black (11th, 19:31), sophomore Will Price (18th, 19:55), frosh Blayton See (20th, 19:58), and frosh Mason Jones (26th, 20:33). Those five gave Cottondale 78 points and first place in a field of nine teams. Mosley was second with 95 points. A big morning for Niceville at the Dolphin Dash

Mosley senior Ethan Mines won the boys' 5K race at his school's seventh annual Dolphin Dash Cross Country Meet, running 17:15. Other than that victory, though, it was a day for Niceville. Niceville won the girls' team title and the boys' team title, and Niceville junior Claire Crist won the girls' 5K in 19:23. Niceville even dominated the junior varsity 5K, with Eagle junior Addison Burkett winning in 19:25 and Niceville runners taking eleven of the first twelve places.

Really, people are going to stop inviting Niceville to their parties.

Competition started at the Lynn Haven Recreation Center in Lynn Haven, Florida, at 8:30 AM with the girls' 5K. Claire Crist took first for Niceville in 19:23, but the next three places also went to Eagles--senior Claudia Howes (2nd, 19:56), sophomore Hannah Schneidewind (3rd, 20:22), and sophomore Ally Woodward (4th, 20:34). Taking fifth in 20:35, Choctawhatchee junior Shelby Lindsay broke the Niceville monopoly on the top places. But the team competition was over when Niceville sophomore Ciara Coger crossed the line eighth in 21:08, giving the Eagles a near-perfect 18 points and the win. Choctawhatchee was second in the twelve-team field with 69 points. Crestview, led by the seventh-place 20:44 of senior Allison Ammons, took third with 96 points.

Mosley Dolphins Mines and Swigler do some fast striding at Strides For Scholars

Bay Education FoundationIn road racing, you should be safe from competition from high school distance runners during track season, right? Well, don't bet on it. February may be high school track season in Florida, but Mosley High athletes Ethan Mines and Ella Swigler were at the fourth annual Strides For Scholars 5K in Panama City, Florida, on Saturday morning, 28 February 2015. Mines, a junior for the Dolphins, won the race in 16:55. Swigler, a frosh, was the first female finisher, coming in fifth overall in 20:54. Maybe Mines and Swigler just love learning--the race was a benefit for the Bay Education Foundation, an organization promoting excellence in public education in Bay County, Florida.

Mines won the race by more than half a kilometer. His time of 16:55 was just off the course record of 16:37, set by Jordan Lance as an Arnold High sophomore in 2013. Master runner Tracey Burch took second in 19:08, and Mosley junior Jared Sylvester was third in 19:42. Master runner Timothy Loomis took fourth in 20:26.

On the women's side, Ella Swigler already had the event record, a 19:35 that she had run in the 2014 Strides For Scholars 5K. Swigler's 20:54 in the 2015 race was good enough to put her more than 600 meters ahead of the next woman finisher and successfully defend her title. Ashley French was second in the women's standings, finishing 23rd overall in 24:06. The top woman master runner in the race was Sharon Westfall-Loomis, the fifth female finisher and 29th overall in 25:11.

411 athletes finished the 2015 Strides For Scholars 5K, the most in the four-year history of the annual race.
