Kambry Smith and Xander Peacock make a big splash at the Dolphin Dash

The tenth annual Dolphin Dash Cross-Country Meet was hosted by Mosley High, a Bay County school. The other Bay County high schools--Arnold, Bay, North Bay Haven, and Rutherford--were all there. Mosley held the event on Saturday morning, 15 September 2018, at the Lynn Haven Sports Complex, which is in Bay County. Nevertheless, it was two Okaloosa County schools, Fort Walton Beach and Niceville, that dominated the competition. Fort Walton Beach edged Niceville for the top spot in the girls' race, 30 to 34. In the boys' 5K it was Niceville that came out ahead of Fort Walton Beach, 30 to 48. Fort Walton Beach had the individual winner of the girls' 5K, sophomore Kambry Smith, who ran 20:16. It wasn't all about Okaloosa County, though. Blountstown High's ace, junior Xander Peacock, won the boys' race in 17:13.

Fort Walton Beach didn't just have the first runner in the girls' 5K, the Vikings had the first two runners in the girls' 5K, with sophomore Jensen Shonk finishing runner-up in 21:33. Baker junior Maya Espinosa was third in 21:41, adding three points to Fort Walton Beach's score and five points to Niceville's score.

Fort Walton Beach had two more scorers in the top ten--sophomore Colby Orcutt (6th, 22:05) and junior Victoria Orcutt (9th, 22:51). However, all five of Niceville's scorers placed in the top ten--junior Erin Converse (4th, 21:44), senior Jayda Brooks (5th, 21:48), senior Hannah Farley (7th, 22:20), senior Erin Wilcox (8th, 22:45), and sophomore Ellie Segars (10th, 23:07). Niceville's sixth runner, senior Nichole Blake, also finished ahead of the fifth Viking scorer, placing eleventh in 23:25. But sophomore Anna Davis added the final points to Fort Walton Beach's total, coming in twelfth in 24:02. After Davis finished, the Fort Walton Beach girls had 30 points and the team trophy. Niceville was a close second with 34 points. Led by Espinosa, the Baker girls scored 90 points to place third in the twelve-team field.

Fowler and Wardley lead at the Superhero 5K

During a year in South Carolina I learned that the Lowcountry of that state is very much like the Panhandle of Florida. So I imagine that USAF Sergeant Cubby Fowler, a Lowcountry native, felt right at home in Lynn Haven, Florida on Saturday morning, 17 June 2017. Fowler certainly felt comfortable enough to win the Emerald Coast Junior Women's Club's Superhero 5K by 600 meters, running 20:02. At 22:47 Jamie Wardley was the top woman and overall runner-up.

Joel Jason was second in the men's standings and third overall in 23:01. Warren Clifton was the first master runner in the race and the third male finisher, fourth overall in 23:10. Master runner Scott Bennette was the fourth man and fifth overall in 23:19.

Kim Allan was the first woman master and second female finisher, placing tenth overall in 25:24. Master runner Eve Phillips was third in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 26:39.

Burke and Claussen win the Run For The Cookies in Lynn Haven

Girl ScoutsFor many years the Boston Athletic Association served a cup of beef stew to the finishers of its fabled marathon. The race started in Hopkinton about lunchtime, and the stew was 26.2 miles away at the finish line in Boston, so I imagine that people worked up an appetite by the time they were served.

I'm sure that the Girl Scouts of America could cook a stew to rival that of the Boston Athletic Association, but the scouts are already famous for their cookies. So when the Girl Scouts put on a five-kilometer race in Lynn Haven, Florida, they weren't serving stew, they were handing out cookies. Every runner received a box of Girl Scout cookies. You didn't even have to finish the 3.1-mile race; as long as you were entered, you got your cookies.

Daniel Burke certainly did finish the run, though. At Lynn Haven's Sheffield Park, Burke won the Girl Scouts' sixth annual Run For The Cookies 5K on Saturday morning, 4 March 2017, running 22:52. Declan Douchins finished in the runner-up spot with a 24:18. John Hunter was the first master runner in the race, placing third overall in 24:39.

Eleven-year-old Rory Claussen took the women's title, placing fourth overall in 24:45. Shelle McDonald was second in the women's standings and seventh overall in 25:47, while Rebecca Eckles was third woman and eleventh overall in 26:53. Lisa Tatem was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, twelfth overall in 27:30.

109 athletes finished the 2017 Run For The Cookies 5K.

Niceville High gets out the brooms for the 3A District 2 Cross-Country Championships

Mosley High DolphinsWhen you're Florida's best high school cross-country team in your class, what do you do at the District meet?

If you're the Niceville girls, you win. And you not only win, you also put up a perfect score. And you not only put up a perfect score, you take the top eight places.

Which means that Niceville also took home the individual title from the 2016 FHSAA 3A District 2 meet, with senior Abbie Harrelson winning the 5K race in 18:55. The Niceville boys made it a sweep for the Eagles, topping the team standings in their own race with 37 points. Niceville didn't take home all the titles, though. Navarre senior Austin Epstein won the boys' 5K, running 16:42.

The meet was hosted by Mosley High on Saturday morning, 22 October 2016, at the Lynn Haven Recreation Center in Lynn Haven, Florida--the same park where Mosley had held the Dolphin Dash four weeks earlier. The girls' race was scheduled for 8:00 AM. Just under nineteen minutes after it started, a pack of athletes wearing Niceville maroon came into view at the finish line. Niceville's Abbie Harrelson was the first across the line in 18:55, with fellow Eagles Ally Woodard and Hannah Schneidewind closed behind in 18:56 and 18:57. Niceville also took the next five places, with Jayden Horne fourth in 19:09, Alexis Sherwin fifth in 19:15, Ciara Coger sixth in 19:16, Erin Eubanks seventh in 19:23, and Jane Parke eighth in 19:43. The Eagles had 15 points and their second straight 3A District 2 title.

Behind senior Jessica Riley (13th, 20:40), the Fort Walton Beach girls scored 65 points to take second in the team standings. The first non-Niceville athlete in the race, Crestview senior Jaclyn Bramlette (9th, 19:57), led her team to third place with a score of 74 points. As the top three teams in the District, Niceville, Fort Walton Beach, and Crestview qualified for the 3A Region 1 meet in Gainesville, Florida. By finishing in the top fifteen, Mosley junior Ella Swigler (14th, 20:54) advanced to the Region as an individual.

A Fort Walton Beach kind of day at the Dolphin Dash

In 2015 Niceville High swept the team titles at Mosley High's Dolphin Dash cross country meet. on Saturday morning, 24 September 2016, another Okaloosa County school, Fort Walton Beach High, swept the team titles at the eighth annual Dolphin Dash. It was actually the third time in the history of the Lynn Haven, Florida event that Fort Walton Beach had returned home with both boys' and girls' team honors.

It's a wonder that Okaloosa County schools are still welcome at the Dolphin Dash.

But Bay County athletes did well enough when it came to individual performances. For instance, in the first race of the morning, the high school girls' 5K, Panama City Rutherford senior Zeana Guirey won by 150 meters, running 21:00. Fort Walton Beach took the next two places, with Jessica Riley second in 21:39 and Maia Rivera third in 21:43. Ella Swigler of host school Mosley was fourth in 21:52.

Fort Walton Beach went on to add two more runners in the top ten, Lauren Adams (5th, 22:03) and Jeanette Chastain (9th, 22:55). Trinity Chastain (11th, 23:14) completed Fort Walton Beach's scoring, giving the team 30 points and first place among six teams. Led by the the sixth-place 22:23 finish of Emma Wilson, North Bay Haven was second in the team standings with 71 points. Rutherford was third with 92 points.

In the high school boys' 5K another Rutherford senior won by that familiar margin of 150 meters--Alix Gennette. The 17:11 win was the second title in a week for Gennete; he had also placed first at the Ram Run on 17 September 2016.

Fort Walton Beach answered by taking the next six places, with scorers Jordan Huckaby second in 17:43, Brandon I Meza third in 17:46, Parker Dewrell fourth in 17:46, George McCann fifth in 17:51, and Daniel Orcutt sixth in 18:07. A big morning for Niceville at the Dolphin Dash

Mosley senior Ethan Mines won the boys' 5K race at his school's seventh annual Dolphin Dash Cross Country Meet, running 17:15. Other than that victory, though, it was a day for Niceville. Niceville won the girls' team title and the boys' team title, and Niceville junior Claire Crist won the girls' 5K in 19:23. Niceville even dominated the junior varsity 5K, with Eagle junior Addison Burkett winning in 19:25 and Niceville runners taking eleven of the first twelve places.

Really, people are going to stop inviting Niceville to their parties.

Competition started at the Lynn Haven Recreation Center in Lynn Haven, Florida, at 8:30 AM with the girls' 5K. Claire Crist took first for Niceville in 19:23, but the next three places also went to Eagles--senior Claudia Howes (2nd, 19:56), sophomore Hannah Schneidewind (3rd, 20:22), and sophomore Ally Woodward (4th, 20:34). Taking fifth in 20:35, Choctawhatchee junior Shelby Lindsay broke the Niceville monopoly on the top places. But the team competition was over when Niceville sophomore Ciara Coger crossed the line eighth in 21:08, giving the Eagles a near-perfect 18 points and the win. Choctawhatchee was second in the twelve-team field with 69 points. Crestview, led by the seventh-place 20:44 of senior Allison Ammons, took third with 96 points.

LaNasa and Rudman lead a Fort Walton Beach sweep at the Dolphin Dash

For the second time in the six-year history of Mosley High's Dolphin Dash, Fort Walton Beach swept everything at the cross-country meet. The girls' team title. The boys' team title. The girls' individual title. The boys' individual title. The Vikings left the course at the Lynn Haven Recreation Center with all of it.

Fort Walton Beach's first Dolphin Dash sweep has been two years earlier, in 2012. Emma Rudman had been with the Vikings in Lynn Haven that year, winning the girls' 5K as a freshman and setting a girls' meet record of 18:54. Rudman and Fort Walton Beach had passed up the Dolphin Dash for other competition in 2013, but in 2014 they were back in Lynn Haven. Now a junior, Rudman's time wasn't as fast as her frosh performance, but it didn't need to be. Running 19:42, Rudman won the girls' 5K by over 100 meters. Behind her, South Walton junior Maddie Fulmer edged Arnold junior Michaela Ashley for the runner-up spot, both runners clocked in 20:12. Fort Walton Beach junior Brooke Crane took fourth in 20:21. Rudman and Crane were joined in the top ten by two other Vikings, senior Alanna Garza (9th, 21:36) and sophomore Jessica Riley (10th, 21:43), setting up a Fort Walton Beach's winning total of 33 points. The Vikings' arch-rival Niceville was second with 45 points, and Crestview was third in the nine-team field with 85 points.

Like Emma Rudman, Fort Walton Beach senior Trey LaNasa had also been with the Vikings at their 2012 sweep of the Dolphin Dash. However, LaNasa had finished third behind two other Vikings that day. LaNasa made up for it in 2014, running the fastest Dolphin Dash ever, a winning 16:13. The next two places also went to the Vikings with senior Josh McDowell taking second in 17:10 and junior Demery Benedict finishing third in 17:17. After Fort Walton Beach's next two runners were in--junior Trace McMullen (8th, 17:43) and sophomore Daniel Orcutt (9th, 17:57)--the Vikings had a mathematically unbeatable score of 23 points and the team title. Niceville was a distance second with 72 points, and Crestview third with 118.
