When you're Florida's best high school cross-country team in your class, what do you do at the District meet?If you're the Niceville girls, you win. And you not only win, you also put up a perfect score. And you not only put up a perfect score, you take the top eight places.
Which means that Niceville also took home the individual title from the 2016 FHSAA 3A District 2 meet, with senior Abbie Harrelson winning the 5K race in 18:55. The Niceville boys made it a sweep for the Eagles, topping the team standings in their own race with 37 points. Niceville didn't take home all the titles, though. Navarre senior Austin Epstein won the boys' 5K, running 16:42.
The meet was hosted by Mosley High on Saturday morning, 22 October 2016, at the Lynn Haven Recreation Center in Lynn Haven, Florida--the same park where Mosley had held the Dolphin Dash four weeks earlier. The girls' race was scheduled for 8:00 AM. Just under nineteen minutes after it started, a pack of athletes wearing Niceville maroon came into view at the finish line. Niceville's Abbie Harrelson was the first across the line in 18:55, with fellow Eagles Ally Woodard and Hannah Schneidewind closed behind in 18:56 and 18:57. Niceville also took the next five places, with Jayden Horne fourth in 19:09, Alexis Sherwin fifth in 19:15, Ciara Coger sixth in 19:16, Erin Eubanks seventh in 19:23, and Jane Parke eighth in 19:43. The Eagles had 15 points and their second straight 3A District 2 title.
Behind senior Jessica Riley (13th, 20:40), the Fort Walton Beach girls scored 65 points to take second in the team standings. The first non-Niceville athlete in the race, Crestview senior Jaclyn Bramlette (9th, 19:57), led her team to third place with a score of 74 points. As the top three teams in the District, Niceville, Fort Walton Beach, and Crestview qualified for the 3A Region 1 meet in Gainesville, Florida. By finishing in the top fifteen, Mosley junior Ella Swigler (14th, 20:54) advanced to the Region as an individual.

The winner of the boys' 5K, Navarre's Austin Epstein, finished just over 30 meters ahead of the runner-up, Niceville junior Jack Johnson (2nd, 16:49). The next three spots when to Choctawhatchee athletes--Matt Roehrig was third in 16:51, Noah Lleva was fourth in 16:56, and Bryan Jonson was fifth in 16:58.
The Niceville Eagles answered the Choctawhatchee charge, though, putting Gabe Bohler sixth in 17:04 and Philip Escoffier seventh in 17:05. Choctaw frosh Jacob Knox was eighth in 17:08, but the Niceville boys finished their team scoring with Andy Holtery taking tenth in 17:09 and Christian Aubert twelfth in 17:12. Niceville had 37 points to Choctawhatchee's 40, narrowly giving the Eagles the District title.
In spite of Austin Epstein's win, Fort Walton Beach edged Navarre for third, 86 to 88. Niceville, Choctawhatchee, and Fort Walton Beach each advanced to the Region 1 meet. Navarre's Epstein qualified for the 3A Region 1 meet as an individual, as did Crestview sophomore James Webb (11th, 17:10) and Navarre senior Christian Brothers (14th, 17:16).
The FHSAA 3A Region 1 Cross-Country Championship is scheduled for Saturday morning, 29 October 2016, on the campus of Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida. The top six teams in the Region will advance to the State Final at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida on Saturday morning, 5 October 2016.
