Camilla's Gnat Days 5K was all about running, not insects, for Patrick Whitehead and Phoebe Judge

2019 Gnat Days 5KIn 2015, Dr. Patrick Whitehead won Camilla, Georgia's 28th annual Gnat Days 5K. Whitehead didn't return to the race the next year, or the year after that, or the year after that. But the Albany State University professor was back in Camilla on Friday evening, 10 May 2019, when he won the 32nd annual Gnat Days 5K, running 17:09 to collect his second title. Phoebe Judge was the first woman in the race, placing ninth overall in 23:06.

At 20:18, Chris Holt of Thomasville, Georgia was the Gnat Days runner-up. Ty Ty, Georgia athlete Kerry Underwood was the top master runner in the 5K for the second year in a row, placing third overall in 20:35.

Lee County High senior Caroline Taylor took second in the women's standings, coming in thirteenth overall in 24:05. Gail Morris was the third woman and fifteenth overall in 24:22. The top woman master in the 5K was Sandra Williams, the thirteenth female finisher and 34th overall in 28:24.

78 athletes finished the 2019 Gnat Days 5K.

Phillips and Williams win the Gnat Days 5K

Conditions in Camilla, Georgia on Friday evening, 11 May 2018, were hot and relatively calm with no prospect of rain. It was perfect weather--for gnats. For the runners in the 31st annual Gnat Days 5K, a different set of conditions might have been preferable.

Benjamin Phillips was unperturbed by either the weather or by Camilla's notorious swarms of gnats. A sophomore cross-country runner at Lee County High in Leesburg, Georgia, Phillips won the race by nearly 60 meters, crossing the finish line at Courthouse Square in 20:06. Donica Williams of Cairo, Georgia was the first woman in the race, placing twelfth overall in 22:54.

Kerry Underwood of Ty Ty, Georgia was the fastest master runner in the Gnat Days 5K, finishing runner-up to Phillips in 20:20. Cairo master runner Justin Williams took third in 20:40, and John Coleman of Decatur, Georgia was fourth in 20:52.

Ramsay Miller, a graduating senior on the Lee County High cross-country team, was second in the women's standings and sixteenth overall in 23:14. Miller had won the women's title in the 2017 Gnat Days 5K. Victoria Feyedelem of Albany, Georgia was the first woman master and third female finisher, nineteenth overall in 23:56. Thirteen-year-old Camilla athlete Hannah Glass was fourth in the women's standings and 21st overall in 24:15.

164 athletes finished Camilla's 2018 Gnat Days 5K.

Hammond and Miller swat the competition at Camilla's Gnat Days 5K

30th annual Gnat Days 5KThe fall line divides North from South Georgia, separating the coastal plain from the piedmont plateau. North of the fall line the terrain is hilly trending towards the mountains, the rivers are treacherous with shoals, and the soils is coarse and peppered with rocks and boulders. South of the fall line the terrain is nearly flat, the larger rivers are navigable to the sea, and the soil is fine-grained. Gnats can't breed in the soil north of the fall line; the texture and chemistry is wrong for them. The moist, sandy soil south of the fall line is perfect for the insects to breed, though, and the coastal plain is one big gnat nursery. For this reason, the fall line is often called the gnat line.

Camilla, Georgia is well south of the gnat line. No amount of swatting or spraying could ever rid Camilla of the insects, so the town celebrates them instead with an annual festival, Gnat Days. Since 1988 the festival has included a road race, the Gnat Days 5K.

Coming from Bonaire, Georgia, just south of the gnat line, Jared Hammond won the 30th annual Gnat Days 5K on Friday evening, 12 May 2017, running 18:22. Another south-of-the-gnat-line athlete, Ramsay Miller of Leesburg, Georgia, took the women's title, placing twelth overall in 21:30.

Jake Merritt, a junior on the Colquitt County High cross-country team, was runner-up in the race, going the 3.1-miles in 18:46. Trevor Boeckmann of Albany, Georgia was third in 19:29. Thomasville, Georgia's Chad Johnson was the first master runner and fourth overall in 19:40. Ben Phillips, a frosh on the Lee County High cross-country squad, grabbed fifth with a 19:54.

Women's champ Ramsay Miller also studies at Lee County High, where she is a junior on the cross-country team. Kimberly Dove of Byron, Georgia was second to Miller in the women's standings, placing fourteenth overall in 22:31. Caitlin Santiago, a frosh on the cross-country team at Westwood High in Camilla, was the third woman and seventeenth overall in 23:23. Albany's Karen McNally was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, nineteenth overall in 23:43.

145 athletes finished the 2017 Gnat Days 5K.

Harris and Thompson have their day at Gnat Days

Chase HarrisIn 2012 Chase Harris came to Camilla, Georgia for the annual Gnat Days 5K. Harris had just finished his frosh year track season at Bainbridge High, and he placed second behind Stephen Robbins, another high school runner. After that Harris didn't return to the race for four years, by which time he had logged a season of track at Maryville University. This time around, no high school runner finished ahead of Harris. No one did. On Friday evening, 13 May 2016, Chase Harris won Camilla's 29th annual Gnat Days 5K in 17:04. Thomasville, Georgia athlete Melissa Thompson was the first woman, coming in sixth overall in 20:32.

If Harris had been out on the course longer, he might have gotten lonely from being so far away from the other runners; he finished almost half a kilometer ahead of the next runner. Behind him, though, Trevor Cleveland and Chad Johnson ended the race in a close fight for second. Cleveland, a a rising junior on the Lee County High cross country team, prevailed in that battle, 19:43 to 19:44. Taking third, Thomasville's Johnson was the top master runner in the race. Another Lee County High harrier, incoming frosh Ben Phillips, was fourth in 20:02.

Camilla's Jessica Potkovac edged Lee County High rising junior Ramsay Miller for the runner-up spot in the women's standings, 23:33 to 23:35, the two runners placing eighteenth and nineteenth overall. Close behind them, Karen McNally was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, twentieth overall in 23:37. McNally was just a few strides ahead of the fifth woman in the race, Thomasville's Beverly Johnson. Johnson was 21st overall in 23:38.

157 athletes finished the 2016 Gnat Days 5K. RANREB Timing Services of Cordele, Georgia timed the race. Gnat Days came a little later than usual this year, so I wouldn't make a guess at the date of the 2017 race. I'm reasonably sure that it will be in May, though, and completely certain that the gnats will be there.

Whitehead and Hamilton outrun everyone but the gnats in Camilla

Patrick WhiteheadEach year during the first weekend of May, the people of Camilla, Georgia, celebrates their gnats. They might as well celebrate, because there is nothing else to do about the pestilential clouds of tiny insects. Before Camilla was ever settled, the gnats were there. Should the settlement be abandoned some time in the far future, the gnats will still be there. There won't be anyone to celebrate the Gnat Days Festival, but I don't think the insects will mind.

Albany, Georgia, athlete Patrick Whitehead won the 28th annual edition of the Gnat Days 5K on Friday evening, 1 May 2015. The Darton College professor's time for the 3.1-mile course was 16:11, the fastest in over a decade. Jared Hammond of Bonaire, Georgia, finished runner-up in 17:55. The 2014 Gnat Days 5K champion, Arnoldo DeJesus of Albany, was third in 18:13. Baconton Charter School graduating senior Samuel Cornwell finished fourth in 19:18. Dennis Moore of Leesburg, Georgia, was the fastest master runner in the race, coming in fifth overall in 19:26.

Thomasville, Georgia, athlete Beverly Hamilton took the women's title, placing 16th overall in 22:13. Westwood School cross-country runner Kaitlin Santiago was second in the women's standings, finishing 24th overall in 23:38. Third on the women's side went to Lee County High frosh Ramsay Miller, 25th overall in 23:32. Jennifer Bramlett of Albany, Georgia, was the top woman master runner and ninth woman finisher, coming in 43rd overall in 27:00.

124 athletes finished the 2015 Gnat Days 5K. Timing and scoring of the race was provided by RANREB Timing Services of Cordele, Georgia. Expect the next Gnat Days 5K on 6 May 2016. If the weather's fine, you can expect the gnats as well.

De Jesus and Oslund flit through Gnat Days 5K

Arnoldo De Jesus and Elena OslundTwo southwest Georgia road racing institutions, the Gnat Days 5K and the Rose City 10K, were just six days apart this year. You couldn't call them twin races, though. Almost everything the Gnat Days race has, the Rose City Run seems to have more. Gnat Days is 3.1 miles long, Rose City is 6.2 miles long. Camilla, home of Gnat Days, is well into the south part of Georgia, less than 40 miles from the Florida border. Thomasville, home of the Rose City Run, is 30 miles farther south than Camilla. 124 athletes finished this year's Gnat Days 5K on 2 May 2014. 463 finished this year's Rose City 10K on 26 April 2014. Gnat Days is an old race, going back to 1988. Rose City is older, going back to 1978.

Still, Camilla has the gnats, cloud-like swarms of them. Thomasville makes no claims on Camilla's gnats.

2014 Gnat Days 5KArnoldo De Jesus of Albany, Georgia, had raced in the 2014 Rose City Run, and he was in Camilla for the 27th annual Gnat Days just six days later. Apparently De Jesus was recovered and ready to compete; he won the Friday evening 5K in Camilla in 18:32. De Jesus was one of several athletes who ran both races. For instance, runner-up Elena Oslund had finished second in the women's standings in the Rose City 10K this spring. In the Gnat Days 5K, Oslund won the women's title in 18:50.

Leesburg, Georgia, runner Dennis Moore hadn't been in Thomasville, but he was certainly in Camilla. Moore was third overall in 19:12, claiming the top master spot in the Gnat Days 5K. Albany master runner Kurt Anthony was fourth in 19:46. A Rose City Run veteran came out on top in a close race for fifth--Thomasville's Gareth Pyle ran 19:53 to edge out Camilla's Michael McGahee (6th, 19:55) and Thomasville's Chad Johnson (7th, 19:57).

Thomasville master runner Mary Anne Grayson, a three-time women's champ in the Gnat Days 5K, was the women's runner-up, placing 10th overall in 20:45.

No flies on Taylor or Banks in Camilla

James TaylorHere's a contrast. If you go to, say, the Rose City Run in Thomasville, you can be so intent on the race that you don't notice the city's roses. Thomasville is full of neatly tended rose gardens, but if you're concentrating on making it to the starting line, split times, hydration, pacing, and the competition, you might not notice a single bloom. On the other hand, you can't go to the Gnat Days 5K in nearby Camilla without noticing the gnats. They demand your attention. I suppose if the flowers were flitting in your eyes and crawling on your every surface then you couldn't help but be aware of them, either.

Which is why it was immediately apparent on Friday evening, 3 May 2013 that the gnats were absent from the 26th annual Gnat Days 5K. It may have been the off-and-on rain that filled the hours before the race that drove the insects away. Or it could have been the high winds that threatened to tear the flags from their poles in downtown Camilla. Possibly it was connected to the disappearing sea ice in the Arctic Ocean. Whatever the reason, there was not a gnat to be seen, heard, or swatted.

James TaylorThe runners in the 5K weren't upset at all about the lack of gnats, least of all James Taylor. The Perry, Florida master runner grabbed the lead in the 3.1-mile race just before the end of the first mile, passing Phillip Morris of Pelham. After that it was Taylor's race. He went on to run a gnat-free 19:06, while Morris finished runner-up in 19:45. Behind the first two runners, Thomasville's Chad Johnson moved steadily up through the field, getting into a late-race duel with Samuel Cornwell of Camilla for third place. Johnson ultimately prevailed over Cornwell, 20:15 to 20:18.

Ashtin BanksLate in the first mile, Ashtin Banks of Thomasville made her way to the front of the women's field. At that point she was about three-fourths of a minute ahead of Amy Cain. As the race progressed, though, the Leesburg master runner closed the gap on Banks. As the runners approached the finish line at the Mitchell County Courthouse, Banks threw in a final sprint to take the top female spot with a 24:33, placing 19th overall. Cain was the second female and the first woman master, finishing 22nd overall in 24:41.

Fans of Friday evening racing should mark their calendars for 2 May 2014 and the 27th annual Gnat Days 5K. Feel free to tell your friends about the date, but let's not tell the gnats. If they don't hear about it, maybe they'll miss next year's race, too.

Robbins and Grayson beat the swarm in Camilla

2012 Gnat Days 5K shirt designThey aren't kidding about the gnats.

Camilla, Georgia chooses to celebrate its seasonal infestation of gnats with an annual Gnat Days festival, complete with parades, Gnat queens, and (of course) a 5K road race. But I couldn't imagine that Camilla's gnats were worse than anywhere else in the region. I remember being bothered by gnats at road races throughout the long southern summer. How could the gnats of Camilla swarm thicker, crawl up more nostrils, or get in more eyes than the gnats of Valdosta, Tallahassee, or Thomasville?

2012 Gnat Days 5KI still don't know how, but Camilla's insects outmatch those of any other town in all those categories or more. I won't pretend that you look down at your legs to see a grey-black crawling mass of winged insect horror, or that you'll see scenes like a man wearing a beard of honeybees, but made out of gnats instead. But even though they fall short of those spectacular levels, they are as awful as any simply annoying insect can be. If you stand still they will be crawling on every square inch of your surface. You'll feel their tiny legs tickling any skin that you dare to expose. You'll be constantly spitting, blowing, and blinking to keep them out of your mouth, nose, and eyes. If you stand still.

Stephen RobbinsWhich is as good a motive as any for more than 200 finishers of the 2012 Gnat Days 5K to keep moving. Stephen Robbins of Cairo, Georgia kept moving especially fast, winning the race in 17:51, nearly 150 meters ahead the runner-up, Chase Harris of Bainbridge, Georgia. Thomasville, Georgia master runner Mary Anne Grayson was the fastest woman in the race, placing sixth overall in 19:47. The first male master was Michael Gavre of Leesburg, Georgia, tenth overall in 20:35.

Mary Anne GraysonThe race was scheduled for an evening start on Friday, 4 May 2012, possibly because the gnats swarm more thickly in the evening. Robbins led from the start, closely trailed in the early going by Nathan Norton of Americus, who had just finished his second year at Darton College in Albany. Chase Harris and Kyle Harris followed. It was Robbins, Norton, Harris, and Harris through the first mile, after which the race turned to wander through neighborhood streets during the second mile. That was when the lead vehicle took the runners off the course. Mary Anne Grayson came to the rescue, though. Grayson knew the course well, having won the Gnat Days women's title in both 2009 and 2010. Running in fifth, she shouted the leaders back onto the route, and the event was saved. Robbins got back out front, going on to win in 17:51. Chase Harris and Kyle Harris were second and third in 18:19 and 18:28. After running much of the race in second, Norton placed fourth in 18:58. Grayson collected her third Gnat Days women's championship with a 19:47. The second woman in as well as the second woman master was Tallahassee's Judy Alexander, 24th overall in 22:46.

Chase Harris and Kyle Harris
Rain threatened but never fell on the over 200 runners in the 2012 Gnat Days 5K, quite a few more than the 130+ who finished the race in 2011. This year's race was billed as the 25th annual, and chances look good for it to grow even older--as sure as the gnats are to return, the Gnat Days 5K should be back in 2013. Maybe they'll have that course marking thing figured out by then.

Avenger and Willingham in a cloud of...gnats

One of Georgia's more unusual small-town festivals is Camilla's annual Gnat Days Festival. The idea of Gnat Days was unique enough to attract the attention of the late Georgia humor columnist, Lewis Grizzard. If you read Grizzard's column about the fourth annual Gnat Days, though, it's clear that he never attended the festival. I also suspect that he never even set foot in Camilla.

Now, I have been to Camilla, and if nothing else I can't drive to Albany without stopping at the Camilla Burger King. I confess that I haven't been to Gnat Days. Nor have I run in the Gnat Days 5K, but I'm a great admirer of the race, or any road race that has been around for more than a couple of decades.

Over 130 athletes did more than admire the race, and ran the 24th annual Gnat Days 5K on Friday evening, 6 May 2011. Valdosta's Masked Avenger was the fastest of the lot, running 17:36 for the win. 2007 and 2008 Gnat Days 5K champion Todd Smoot of Valdosta was the runner-up and top master in 18:07. Camilla's Jenna Willingham, the 2007 GISA state mile champion in her days at Westwood Schools (c/o 2008), won the women's title in 23:53. Just a few steps back, Bainbridge runner and Grace Christian Academy coach Julie Harris posted a 23:58 to finish as the second woman and the first woman master.
