Henry Plowden and Alli Hay would run fast at the Will Run For S'Mores 5K

Henry Plowden wrapped up his cross-country season with Westover High School at the GHSA State Championship on 3 November 2018, finishing ninth in the 4A boys 5K. Alli Hay finished her cross-country season with Columbus State University at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional on 17 November 2018, finishing 43rd in the women's 6K. Cross-country season may have been over, but running season never ends. On Saturday morning, 15 December 2018, both of those athletes were on the streets of Albany, Georgia for Wild Side Running's sixth annual Will Run For S'Mores 5K. Plowden was the overall winner, going 17:59. Hay was the first woman in the race, placing second overall in 18:39.


Courtland Buntin took second in the men's standings, coming in third overall in 19:25. Austin Thaxton was the third man and fourth overall in 19:30. Carl Plowden was the fastest master runner in the race, finishing as the eighth man and tenth overall in 20:52.


Just ahead of Carl Plowden, Amanda An finished ninth overall in 20:51, the second woman in the race. Twelve-year-old Trace Bridges, a seventh-grader on the Deerfield Windsor School middle school cross-country team, placed third in the women's standings and eighteenth overall in 22:38. Sara Ostrander, the women's winner of the 2017 S'Mores 5K, was the top woman master and fifth female finisher in the 2018 race, placing twentieth overall in 22:51.


129 athletes finished the 2018 Will Run For S'Mores 5K.

Whitehead and Sheppard win the first 10K at the 21st Crowdis Run

A lot changed about the Dr. James H. Crowdis Run in 2017. After being contested twenty times over 37 years as a five-kilometer race, the main event changed to a 10K. After four years of running in July, the date of the Crowdis moved to the other end of the calendar, changing to 21 January 2017. The course changed. The starting line and the finish line changed.


It was still a Blakely, Georgia race, though. The run still started and finished at the First United Methodist Church. And the winner was still Patrick Whitehead. The Darton State College professor shrugged off the change from 5K to 10K and claimed his second straight Crowdis title, covering the 6.2-mile course in a winning 36:24. Katie Sheppard, a frosh on the Southwest Georgia Academy cross-country team, claimed the women's title, placing ninth overall in 54:43.


Enterprise (Alabama) High cross-country runner Michael Warner finished runner-up in 41:23. Bainbridge High junior Haydn Griffin took third in 44:03, and Baconton County sophmore Gregory Manning was fourth in 45:07. Dylan Hrncik was the fastest master runner in the 10K, placing sixth overall in 48:30.


Stephanie Odom of Colquitt, Georgia was the fastest woman master and second female finisher, eleventh overall in 55:29. Bainbridge, Georgia master runner Suzanne Angell was third in the women's standings and sixteenth overall in 57:56.

The 5K wasn't dropped from the program of the Dr. James H. Crowdis Run, though; it only lost top billing. Trevor Cleveland won the shorter event by nearly 400 meters. A junior on the Lee County High cross-country team, Cleveland completed the 3.1-mile course in 19:23. Alli Hay, a senior-year cross-country runner at Pataula Academy, was the top women and overall runner-up in 20:23. Dale Thomas was the fastest master runner in the 5K and fourth overall in 21:01. Debra Hunter-McCoy was the first woman master and sixth female finisher, 21st overall in 24:51. Hunter-McCoy had been the women's champ at the 2012 Crowdis 5K.


33 athletes finished the 2017 Dr. James H. Crowdis 10K, with another 58 completing the 5K.

Calhoun and Hay get S'more wins in Albany

Fresh from his first cross-country season at Columbus State University, Wright Calhoun won the Run For S'Mores 5K on Saturday morning, 17 December 2016. Calhoun covered the 3.1-mile course through the streets of Albany, Georgia in 17:03, finishing more than 300 meters ahead of the next runner. Alli Hay, a senior on the Pataula Charter Academy cross-country team, was the top woman in the race, placing seventh overall in 20:08. 68 athletes finished the race, which started and finished at Wild Side Running.


The runner-up spot went to Brian Miller, a former teammate of Wright Calhoun when the two ran for Southland Academy. Miller's time was 18:13. Trevor Cleveland, a junior on the Lee County High cross-country team, placed third in 18:54. Ben Phillips, a frosh on the same squad, edged Dennis Moore for fourth, 19:42 to 19:44. Moore was the first master runner in the race.


Deerfield-Windsor junior Camryn Bridges took second in the women's standings, coming in eighth overall in 20:36. Jen Perkins was the third woman and tenth overall in 21:11. Sarah Ostrander was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, eleventh overall in 21:42.
