Brian Miller and Abigail Garner came from far and wide to win the Heatwave

From Americus, Georgia to Columbus, Georgia is about a sixty-mile trip. That's the trip that Americus athlete Brian Miller made to be in Columbus on Saturday morning, 6 July 2024, to win the fourteenth annual Big Dog Heatwave Five Mile in 27:44. Coming from the other direction, Abigail Garner traveled twenty miles from Salem, Alabama for the Heatwave Five Mile; Garner was the first woman in the race, placing eleventh overall in 31:30.


Blake Sims of Midland, Georgia was the first master runner in the Heatwave, coming in second overall in 28:41. Jake Griffith of Americus took third at 29:37.

Miller had won the men's division by nearly a minute, but Abigail Garner led the women's division by close to three minutes. An alum of Phenix, Alabama Central High, Garner is currently a cadet at the United State Military Academy, where she runs cross-country and track.


Effie Rose Ward was runner-up in the women's standings for the second year in a row; this time the Harris County High sophomore was nineteenth overall in 34:14. Columbus' Erin Pugh was the third woman across the finish line, 25th overall in 35:28. Midland, Georgia's Liz Brooks was the first woman master and the fifth female finisher, 41st overall in 38:10.


210 athletes finished the 2024 Big Dog Heatwave Five Mile. Lightning Sports Racing of Columbus, Georgia timed the race.

Brian Miller wrecks the record at Shamrock Jog & Jam

On Saturday afternoon, 2 March 2024, Brian Miller became the first athlete to break 17:00 at the Shamrock Jog & Jam 5K in the twelve-year history of that Americus, Georgia race. Miller didn't just sneak past the 17:00 barrier either--the Americus distance runner blew it up, posting a new course record of 16:33 and winning the race by almost 800 meters. Eleven-year-old S. Arnold took first in the women's division, placing sixth overall in 25:24.


Miller's 16:33 was more than half a minute better than the previous course record, Wright Calhoun's 17:05. Calhoun's mark had stood since 2014, a ten-year-old record. Most records don't last that long. Most races don't last that long.


Americus' Aaron Pinckard, the 2022 Shamrock Jog & Jam champion, was runner-up in the 2024 race. Coleman Fort took third, running 22:08. Chad Bell was the first master runner in the 5K, coming in sixth overall in 25:35.


The second spot in the women's standings was decided by a showdown between Bailey James and Mallory Crenshaw, with James prevailing--her 25:51 was slightly faster than Crenshaw's 25:51. James is an alum of the Southland Academy track team; Crenshaw is a sophomore on the cross-country squad at Schley County High. Crystal Kilheffer of Americus was the first woman master in the race and the fifth female finisher, sixteenth overall in 28:41.


49 athletes finished the 2024 Shamrock Jog And Jam 5K. The race benefits the Scott Law Foundation, which provides direct financial assistance to Sumter and surrounding county residents suffering from cancer or other medical ailments.

Brian Miller and Isidora Catron burn the record books at the Home Run 5K

The Home Run 5K, hosted by the First United Methodist Church of Americus, Georgia, is a road running event, so there are no bats or balls involved. Nevertheless, at the eleventh annual Home Run 5K on Saturday morning, 3 June 2023, Brian Miller and Isidora Catron each figuratively hit it out of the park. Miller won the race by almost 400 meters, setting a Home Run 5K record of 16:20. Catron won the women's division by more than a kilometer, placing fourth overall in 20:04.


Miller, an Americus athlete and Southland Academy alum, crushed the previous record by more than half a minute. The prior mark, 16:55, was set by Wright Calhoun in the 2014 race. Miller and Calhoun are the only two athletes to run sub-17:00 in the Home Run 5K. The women's record was even older, a 21:48 run by Amber Hodor in 2013, the first year of the race. Catron, a frosh on the Wilcox County High cross-country team, ran 1:44 faster than that ten-year-old standard.


Jack Miller was runner-up for the second year in a row, this time with a 17:32. A sophomore distance runner at Trinity Dublin Christian School, Miller improved almost half a minute on the 17:57 he ran in the 2022 race. Jake Griffith of Americus placed third in the 5K with a 17:56. Americus' Terence Duncan was the first master runner in the race and ninth male finisher, placing tenth overall in 24:51.


Mallory Crenshaw, a frosh distance runner on the Schley County High track team, placed second to Isidora Catron in the women's standings, placing twelfth overall in 25:25. Cindy Godfrey of Butler, Georgia was the first woman master and third female finisher, thirteenth overall in 25:48.


48 athletes finished the 2023 Home Run 5K. Hardy Race Timing of Perry, Georgia chip-timed the race.

Brian Miller and Caitlin Mixon rock wins in the 11th annual Shamrock Jog & Jam 5K

The threat of rain may have prevented some people from showing up for the Shamrock Jog & Jam 5K in Americus, Georgia on 25 March 2023. For the athletes that did make it to the eleventh annual race that Saturday afternoon, the weather didn't prevent them from running fast. Brian Miller was the class of the field; the Americus runner went 18:04 to beat all comers, including defending champ Aaron Pinckard. Caitlin Mixon of Vienna, Georgia was the first woman in the 5K, placing fifth overall in 22:40.


Jake Griffith took the runner-up spot in 18:29. Aaron Pinckard, the 2022 Shamrock Jog & Jam winner, placed third in 20:53. Bucky Thompson was the first master runner and fourth overall in 22:19.


Mallory Crenshaw, a frosh distance runner on the track team at Schley County High, placed second in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 27:03. Donna Peacock was the first woman master and third female finisher, sixteenth overall in 30:30.

Repeat wins for Harvest Run record-holders Whitehead and Perkins

Dr. Patrick Whitehead made it two in a row, winning the Leesburg, Georgia Harvest Run 10K for the second year in a row on Saturday morning, 24 November 2016. The Darton State College professor ran 36:45 in the third annual event, finishing more than 900 meters ahead of the runner-up. On the women's side, Jennifer Perkins was also a repeat winner in the third annual event. Perkins had won the women's title in inaugural 10K in 2014; after an absence in 2015 she returned to finish as top woman in 2016, placing seventh overall in 44:47.


Behind Dr. Whitehead, Arnoldo DeJesus was second in the 6.2-mile race with a 40:31. Trailing DeJesus by 40 meters, Dennis Moore was the top master runner, placing third overall in 40:41.


Jennifer Romano was the top woman master and second female finisher, tenth overall in 46:51. Kathryn Daniel was third in the women's standings and fifteenth overall in 52:08.


In addition to being repeat winners, Patrick Whitehead and Jennifer Perkins were both record holders in the event. Whitehead set the Harvest Run men's record of 36:11 in 2015, and Perkins the women's record of 41:32 in 2014. In the 2016 Harvest Run 5K Brian Miller also became a record holder. The Southland Academy alumnus won the 3.1-mile race in 18:34, eclipsing the old mark of 18:46 set by Henry Plowden in 2015. Aaron Pinckard, a distance runner on the Schley County Middle School cross-country team, was second in the 5K, running 19:18. Lee County junior-year cross-country runner Trevor Cleveland took third with a 20:32.


Kayla Sanseverino won the women's title in the 5K, placing eighth overall in 22:27. Severino is a sophomore on the cross-country team at Douglas High in Parkland, Florida. Twelve-year-old Emily Phillips was second in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 23:07. Ramsay Miller, a junior on the Lee County High cross-country team, was the third female finisher and twelfth overall in 23:48. Budd Bramlett was the top master runner in the 5K, placing ninth overall in 22:46. Betsy Goslin was the first woman master and sixth female finisher, 27th overall in 27:45.


44 athletes finished the 10K and 76 the 5K at the third annual Harvest Run. Proceeds of the event benefit the Challenger League for Special Needs Youth and the Lee County Wrestling Program.
