Leonardo Canete and Josie Brown are first home at the Home Run 5K

Americus, Georgia has had an on-again/off-again relationship with professional baseball since the Americus Pallbearers threw out the first pitch in 1906. However, there hasn't been a pro team in the city since the Americus Arrows closed up shop after the 2002 season. As a substitute of sorts, Americus First United Methodist Church has hosted the Home Run 5K Road Race annually since 2013. Leonardo Canete, a Tallahassee, Florida master runner, won the tenth annual Home Run 5K, going 17:20 on the streets of Americus. Twelve-year-old Josie Brown of Fort Benning, Georgia was the first runner in the women's division, placing tenth overall in 23:30.


Canete's winning time of 17:20 makes him the second-fastest athlete ever at the Home Run 5K. The fastest remains Wright Calhoun, who set the event record of 16:55 in 2014. Calhoun also posted a winning time of 17:20 in the 2017 race. But no one other than Calhoun has run the Home Run 5K faster than Canete.


Jack Miller of Irwinton, Georgia followed Canete across the finish line to take the runner-up slot. Miller, a rising sophomore on the cross-country team at Dublin Trinity Christian High, ran 17:57. Americus master runner Patrick Calcutt, took third in 19:23. Calcutt was runner-up in the previous year's Home Run 5K.


Cynthia Godfrey of Butler, Georgia was the first woman master in the race and the second female finisher, fifteenth overall in 25:29. Fort Benning master runner Jackie Brown placed third in the women's standings and seventeenth overall in 25:47.


47 athletes finished the 2022 Home Run 5K. Hardy Race Timing of Perry, Georgia chip-timed the race.
