On the calendar, the first day of summer in the Northern Hemisphere is June 21. Or sometimes June 20. It depends on some technical issues involving the solstice, leap years, and Pope Gregory XIII. Meteorologists, in spite of their status as scientists, ignore all that. For meteorological purposes, summer always starts on June 1. And when summer starts people are drawn to the water--swimming pools, ponds, rivers, the ocean. So it's no wonder that on the first Saturday of the meteorological summer, 4 June 2022, crowds of people headed to Panama City Beach, Florida and the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. More than a few weren't there for the surf, though. They were there for the second annual Jam On The Coast 5K. The fastest of that group was Scott Wilkes, who won the race by more than 300 meters in 18:55. Morristown, Tennessee master runner Andee Swann was the first woman in the race, placing sixth overall in 21:10.Gregory Solarek of Panama City Beach was the first master runner in the race, placing second overall in 20:18. Steven Marcet, a cross-country runner at Woodward Academy, took third in the race with a 20:27.
Birmingham, Alabama's Tabitha Barton was the second woman in the race and fourteenth overall in 23:43. Thirteen-year-old Abigayle White of Winter Gardens, Florida, finished third in the women's standings and fifteenth overall in 23:59.
250 athletes finished the 2022 Jam On The Coast 5K. Runner's Edge Race Timing chip-timed and scored the race.
