Leonardo Canete and Sharon Sason depart Ozark with Alabama State Games titles
For Canete, it was his sixth win during seven straight Saturdays of racing in three different states--Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. That string had included a win at the Nesmith 5K in Tallahassee on April 30, a win at the Tails and Trails Half Marathon in Tallahassee on May 7, a win at the Soul Of The Southside 5k In Tallahassee on May 14, a win at the Backwoods 5K in Fort Braden on May 21, a runner-up finish at the Swamp Forest Trail Race in Tallahassee on May 28, a win at the Home Run 5K in Americus on June 4, and now another win at the Alabama State Games 5K.
Paul Gonzalez of Fort Rucker, Alabama finished runner-up to Canete in the State Games 5K with a 21:19. Chancellor, Alabama master runner Jimmy Russell was third in 22:56.
Sharon Sason's women's title in the State Games 5K came after a second-place showing in the 2021 race, also in Ozark. Ginny Gunn of Troy, Alabama was second in the women's standings, taking eighth overall with a 28:56. Sendy Alamonte of Fort Rucker was the third woman and eleventh overall in 35:54.
The Alabama State Games are a qualifier for the 2022 State Games Of America, slated for 27-31 July 2022 in Ames and Des Moines, Iowa. Although there is no road race at the State Games of America, there are track and field events as well as a 4K and an 8K cross-country race.
Fourteen athletes finished the 2022 Alabama State Games 5K. River Region Timing timed the race.
