A repeat win for Shearon and a record run for Nelson at the Coach Post 10K

Each April, the Coach Post Run takes places near Panama City Beach, Florida in Saint Andrews State Park. Obviously, the race isn't named after David Shearon. Nevertheless, the master runner from Panama City Beach manages to frequently put his name on it. Most recently, on Saturday morning, 14 April 2018, Shearon ran 40:13 in the fifth annual Coach Post 10K, winning the race for the third time in five years. Panama City, Florida master runner Jennifer Nelson won the women's title, setting a new course record for women of 43:02 and placing fourth overall.


Ivan De La Cruz, a sophomore on the Mosley High cross-country team, placed second in the 10K, running 40:38. It was a better than two-minute improvement on the 42:44 that he had run in the 2017 race, where De La Cruz also placed second. Just two days before this latest effort, De La Cruz had ended his high school track season with a 5:07.31/11:33.46 double in the 1600/3200 at the District 2 meet. Nicolas Waddell, a Mowat Middle School sixth-grader who has been spotted racing cross-country in a Rutherford High uniform, placed third in 42:43.


Port Saint Joe, Florida master runner Dana Black was second in the women's standings and fifth overall in 45:59. Another master runner, Amy Helms of Panama City Beach, was the third woman and tenth overall in 50:18.


69 athletes finished the 2018 Coach Post 10K.

The Coach Post 10K course makes two loops of Saint Andrews State Park; for athletes who only want to do one loop there's the Coach Post 5K. Kaden Jones won the shorter race, running 19:33. Jones is a frosh-year runner on the Mosley High cross-country team. Like 10K runner-up De La Cruz, Jones finished up his high school track season at the District 2 meet two days before the Coach Post Run. Jones also doubled at that meet, running 5:04.52 in the 1600 and 2:09.06 in the 800. Andrew Bahati of Lynn Haven, Florida took second in the 5K, running 22:39. Joseph Cloutier was the first master runner in the race, placing third overall in 23:47.


Sanford, Florida athlete Zanetta Barnes was the first woman in the 5K, coming in twelfth overall in 26:17. Allison Blomquist of Panama City was second in the women's standings and sixteenth overall in 27:22. Danielle Cureton was the third woman and eighteenth overall in 27:55. Heather Webb of Sterling, Virginia was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, nineteenth overall in 28:05.


136 athletes finished the 2018 Coach Post 5K. Both the 10K and the 5K were chip-timed by Alta Vista Sports.

The good times keep on rolling, and so does David Shearon at the Mardi Gras 5K

One way to get a strand of Mardi Gras beads was to run the eighteenth annual Mardi Gras 5K in Panama City Beach, Florida on Saturday morning, 10 February 2018. If that wasn't risque enough, you could always make up a more exotic story as to how you came by the beads. You couldn't honestly say, though, that you had gotten the beads by winning the race. You couldn't, that is, if you weren't David Shearon. A Panama City Beach master runner, Shearon wom the Mardi Gras 5K in 19:02. Mariia Solomonova captured the women's crown with a 23:48 run, good for eleventh overall.


Shearon, the runner-up in the 2017 Mardi Gras 5K, had also won the race in 2014 and 2015. Nicolas Waddell, a Rutherford High cross-country runner, finished second behind Shearon in 19:57. Master runner Dan Station took third in 20:22.


Santa Isenhhour was second in the women's standings and fifteenth overall in 24:18. Master runner Kim Allan was the third female finisher and seventeenth overall in 24:34.


145 athletes finished the 2018 Mardi Gras 5K. Another 43 completed a 5K walk, and seventeen finished a one-mile fun run. Proceeds of the race went to benefit the Honor Flights program for World War II veterans.

David Shearon gets a second win and the record at the Coach Post 10K

After winning Panama City Beach, Florida's inaugural Coach Post 10K in 2014, master runner David Shearon lost the title to Jeffrey Schlenker 38:11 to 38:53 at the 2015 race. Shearon returned to Saint Andrews State Park on Saturday morning, 9 April 2016, for the third annual event. The Panama City Beach athlete not only recaptured the title, but also set a new Coach Post 10K record, covering the 6.2 miles in 36:31. Amanda Thompson of Freeport, Florida was the women's champ, finishing twelfth overall in 45:00.


Behind Shearon, Ezra Swanson of Panama City Beach edged Pensacola master runner Yancey Ream for the runner-up spot, 37:28 to 27:29. Blaine Truman of Panama City was fourth in 38:28 and Tracey Burch was fifth in 38:41.


Susan Allen was the top woman master and second female finisher, eighteenth overall in 47:40. Camilla, Georgia's Jill Hope placed third in the women's standings and nineteenth overall in 49:15.

Brian Kloiber of Panama City Beach won the Coach Post 5K, running 18:36. Another Panama City Beach runner, Jacob Slaughter, was second in 19:25. Hot on Slaughter's heels, Brian Johnson of Atlanta, Georgia was the fastest master runner in the race and third overall in 19:25.


Norma McPherson of Panama City, Florida was the women's champ in the 5K, placing sixth overall in 23:28. Ashley French, also of Panama City, was the women's runner-up and eighth overall in 23:30. Daleville, Alabama's Gretchen Hansen was third in the women's standings and tenth overall in 24:33.


69 athletes finished the third annual Coach Post 10K, and another 134 completed the 5K. Gulfsport Timing of Pensacola, Florida timed both races.

It's Shearon by nearly a mile in the Pilot Club 5K

If you saw Panama City Beach, Florida master runner David Shearon in Frank Brown Park in his hometown on Saturday morning, 12 March 2016, then you might have thought he was doing a solo workout. Sure, he was going at a quick pace, but there was no one anywhere near him. Maybe it was an interval session?


Shearon was running a race, though, the annual Pilot Club 5K. He just seemed alone, because the other athletes were so far behind. By the time Shearon had finished the 3.1-mile race in 18:41, he was more than 1400 meters ahead of the next runner. Shearon had also won the race the previous year--although not by nearly as large a margin.


Todd Kurtz finished a distant second in 26:04, and Gunnar Elder was third in 27:44. Deanna McCormack was the first woman in the race, placing fifth overall in 27:59.


37 athletes finished the race. The Pilot Club of Panama City uses the proceeds of the race to support charities for brain-related disorders.

Bon temps for Shearon and Mann at Mardi Gras 5K

Leaving his nearest challenger almost half a kilometer behind, master runner David Shearon won the Mardi Gras 5K in Panama City Beach on Saturday morning, 1 March 2014. Dan Meraw was runner-up in 20:06, with Adam Lewis third in 20:26. Mark McCarra finished fourth in 21:22.


Amy Mann captured the women's title in the 3.1-mile race, placing fifth overall in 21:32. Katie Carroll was second in the women's standings, ninth overall in 24:47. Debbie Chitwood was the third woman and first woman master, coming in 11th overall in 25:03.

Shearon and Kennedy romp at Red Pepper Run

In running after you turn 40 you're referred to as a master. Sometimes master runner means old dude, and sometimes it means master runner. The old dudes certainly exhibited mastery in their running at the 2011 Red Pepper Run on St. George Island, taking most of the top ten places and all but one of the first seven spots in the 5K race. Master runner David Shearon of Panama City successfully defended his 2010 Red Pepper Run title, racing to a time of 18:00. Tallahassee master runner Joel Piotrowski was next across the line at 18:16, followed by another Tallahassee master, Andy Roberts (3rd, 19:44). Florida Sate University undergraduate Tyler Muntean (4th, 21:10) was the first non-master, followed by 2009 Red Pepper Run champion, Eastpoint veterinarian Hobson Fulmer (5th, 21:56).


Youth fared better in the women's division, where Meghan Kennedy (7th, 22:27) outran Shelby Burgess (11th, 23:40) for the title. The top woman master was Alane Kadel (31st, 27:53), the tenth woman across the finish line.


The race was run on an out-and-back course on St. George Island--a barrier island off the coast of the Florida panhandle that is so narrow that the only real alternative to an out-and-back course is a point-to-point course. At the 2010 race, Shearon had spotted the field 35 seconds by being sequestered in a portable toilet when the starting gun went off. This year he went right into the lead, building up a gap on the trip out that he maintained on the way back. Runner-up Piotrowski recalled, "I tried to reel him in but the guy is strong like a mule." The runners were also faced with a stiff headwind during the second half of the race, an invisible hill that they had to climb on the return trip.


The 5K Red Pepper Run is part of St. George Island's Chili Cook-Off, an annual charity event which was held for the 29th time this year. The Chili Cook-Off and the Red Pepper Run should be back on Saturday, 4 March 2012.
