One way to get a strand of Mardi Gras beads was to run the eighteenth annual Mardi Gras 5K in Panama City Beach, Florida on Saturday morning, 10 February 2018. If that wasn't risque enough, you could always make up a more exotic story as to how you came by the beads. You couldn't honestly say, though, that you had gotten the beads by winning the race. You couldn't, that is, if you weren't David Shearon. A Panama City Beach master runner, Shearon wom the Mardi Gras 5K in 19:02. Mariia Solomonova captured the women's crown with a 23:48 run, good for eleventh overall.Shearon, the runner-up in the 2017 Mardi Gras 5K, had also won the race in 2014 and 2015. Nicolas Waddell, a Rutherford High cross-country runner, finished second behind Shearon in 19:57. Master runner Dan Station took third in 20:22.
Santa Isenhhour was second in the women's standings and fifteenth overall in 24:18. Master runner Kim Allan was the third female finisher and seventeenth overall in 24:34.
145 athletes finished the 2018 Mardi Gras 5K. Another 43 completed a 5K walk, and seventeen finished a one-mile fun run. Proceeds of the race went to benefit the Honor Flights program for World War II veterans.
