Bon temps rouler as Nay and Hughes roll at the Mardi Gras 5K

Panama City Beach FL 2017 Mardi Gras 5KNew Orleans doesn't have the only Mardi Gras celebration on the Gulf Coast of the United States. According to the folks in Mobile, Alabama the New Orleans celebration isn't even the oldest on the Gulf Coast; Mobile claims to have started partying years before New Orleans was even founded. Panama City Beach, Florida observes Carnival as well, holding the Mardi Gras 5K each year on the Saturday before Fat Tuesday.


The seventeenth annual Mardi Gras 5K on Saturday morning, 25 February 2017, in Panama City Beach's Frank Brown Park. Former Indiana State cross-country runner John Nay won the 3.1-mile race by more than 300 meters, covering the course in 17:18. David Shearon was the top master runner and overall runner-up, running 18:33. Ivan De La Cruz, a frosh on the Mosley High cross-country team, placed third in 20:09


Kiersten Hughes took the women's title, placing nineteenth overall in 23:32. Rory Claussen was second in the women's standings and 21st overall in 24:10. Danielle Mullick, the women's champ at the 2016 Mardi Gras 5K, was the third woman and 23rd overall in 24:16. Kim Allan was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, 29th overall in 25:00.


178 athletes finished the 2017 Panama City Beach Mardi Gras 5K. Additionally, 34 athletes completed a 5K walk and another eighteen did a one-mile fun run. Proceeds of the race went to benefit the Honor Flights program for World War II veterans.
