Burch and Mulick were head of the class at the Strides For Scholars 5K

On Saturday morning, 11 February 2017, the Bay Education Foundation hosted the Strides For Scholars 5K for the sixth time since 2012. Panama City, Florida master runner Tracey Burch won that sixth annual race, covering the 3.1-mile course through the streets of his hometown in 19:09. Danielle Mulick of Lynn Haven, Florida was the first woman in the race, placing 23rd overall in 24:22. They weren't the only ones running that morning; an event-record field of 409 athletes finished the 5K.


Master runner Mike Sullivan took the overall runner-up spot in 19:37. Joel Jason was third overall in 20:33, just ahead of fourth-place Nicolas Waddell at 20:40.


Stephanie Fischer was the runner-up for the women and 27th overall in 25:08. Savannah Stanton, a senior on the Mosley High cross-country team, was third in the women's standings and 32nd overall in 25:43. Rebecca McConnell was the first woman master and twelfth female finisher, 45th overall in 27:26.

Abbinanti and Mulick precede Fat Tuesday with a Fast Saturday

Lynn Haven, Florida marathon runner Charles Abbinanti won the Mardi Gras 5K in Panama City Beach, Florida on Saturday morning, 6 February 2016. Crossing the finish line close to 80 meters ahead of the next runner, Abbinanti covered the 3.1-mile course through Frank Brown Park in 18:30. Tracey Burch was the fastest master runner in the race, placing second overall in 18:48. Panama City Beach master runner David Shearon took third in 19:06.


Danielle Mulick of Lynn Haven was the 2016 Mardi Gras 5K women's champ, placing eighth overall in 23:34. Just 50 meters behind Mulick, Norma McPherson was second in the women's standings, ninth overall in 23:49. Sarah Tiahrt edged Sheryl Summers 23:59 to 24:00 for third place in the women's standings, the two runners finished tenth and eleventh overall. Summers was the top woman master in the 5K.


140 runners finished Panama City Beach's 2016 Mardi Gras 5K. Another 26 athletes competed in the Mardi Gras 5K walk, while nine more finished the Mardi Gras one-mile fun run.

Lamers and Mulick run fast for their Furry Friends

The Humane Society of Bay County, Florida, has scheduled their annual Furry Friend 5K earlier each year. The race started off as a Memorial Day weekend race in 2011, but moved to late April the next year. A mid-April event followed, and then an early April date. The fifth annual Furry Friend 5K was earlier still, 28 March 2015. There may be a method to this scheduling madness, though, because 162 athletes finished the 2015 race, more than in any of the four preceding years.


The fastest of those 162 was Casey Lamers. Lamers had finished runner-up in the 2014 Furry Friend 5K, but this year the race was his, as he covered the 3.1-miles through Panama City Beach's Frank Brown Park in 18:16. Not quite 100 meters back, Justin Williams was second in 18:37. Zack Bragdon finished third in 19:50. The top master in the race was David Griffin, who placed seventh overall in 22:33.


Danielle Mulick of Lynn Haven, Florida, took the women's title, finishing tenth overall in 23:14. Mowat Middle School cross-country runner Catherine MacLean was second in the women's standings, placing eleventh in 23:34. Right behind MacLean in twelfth overall at 23:45, Surfside Middle School distance runner Reagan Erbe was third in the women's division. Kristin Lamers was the first female master runner and fifth woman finisher, 21st overall in 26:07.
