McCurdy, a graduate student in mathematics at Florida State University, won the Run For The Cookies in 16:27, which currently stands as the year's fastest 5K on the Tallahassee roads. That performance displaces the previous leading mark, a 16:42 posted by Mark Zamani at the Trent Trot 5K on 28 January 2017. In 2016 McCurdy ended the year ranked ninth on the Tallahassee 5K road list with a 16:41 from the VetFest 5K. In addition to McCurdy, eighteen other athletes in the men's top 25 are listed with times from the Run For The Cookies. Clearly, it was a good day for a run.

At least one thing remained unchanged, though--Geb Kiros still leads the master runners with his 17:39 performance from the Bowlegs 5K on 14 January 2017. Kiros was the top master runner at the Run For The Cookies, but his 17:42 was no faster than his earlier mark.
Ani Veltcheva raced to the top of the women's list with a 17:35 at the Run For The Cookies. Her performance was not only more than a minute faster than the previous leading time for women, but it was also the fastest women's 5K run on the Tallahassee roads since 3 October 2015, when Katie Sherron ran 17:34 in the Hurricane Run. Veltcheva is from Gainesville, Florida where she studies and runs cross-country at Abraham Lincoln Middle School, but she is no stranger to the Tallahassee roads. In 2016 Veltcheva won the Palace Saloon 5K women's title in 18:13, a time that led the women's list for seven months and ended the year ranked second.

Sheryl Rosen had held the top spot on the women's list before the Run For The Cookies. She lowered her best mark of the year to 18:31 at the Run For The Cookies, putting her second on the list. Laura Reina is the new top woman master after running 21:42 at Run For The Cookies; Reina is thirteenth on the women's list.
There are more than a few 5K races on USATF-certified courses coming up in Tallahassee, so the rankings could get another make-over soon. Those events include the Break-A-Leg 5K on 18 February 2017, the fifth annual Trailblazer 5K on 25 February 2017, the 29th annual Shamrock Scurry 5K on 4 March 2017, the second annual Florida High 5K on 25 March 2017, and the Springtime 5K on 1 April 2017 are all on certified courses as well. And of course there's Gulf Winds Track Club's 43rd annual Palace Saloon 5K on 15 April 2017. In just the next two months, that's quite a few opportunities to break into the rankings.
