Snyder and Fleming are winners at FSUCares 5K

Aaron Snyder led a field of 363 runners to the finish line at the annual FSUCares 5K on Florida State University's Tallahassee campus on Sunday afternoon, 25 October 2009. Snyder's winning time was 16:22, putting him nearly a quarter mile ahead of runner-up Kyle Harris of Bainbridge, who finished at 17:37. Snyder broke his competition by the end of the first mile, and spent the last two miles of the race building up his lead. Snyder is a former track and cross country runner for Iona College (c/o 2008) and an Oklahoma high school state champion in the 800m and 1600m. The top master finisher was Joel Piotrowski, finishing sixth overall in 18:28.

The class of the women's competition was Mary Catherine Fleming, a former Orlando (Florida) Boone High School (c/o 2008) distance runner. Fleming was 26th overall in 21:18, forty seconds ahead of Alexis Gouldman, the next woman across the finish line. Gouldman was also a distance runner in high school, competing for Gulf Breeze High School (c/o 2008) in northwest Florida. Lisa Cox was the top woman master at 50th overall in 22:57, her third master win in the month of October.

The course started on West Call Street in front of the Florida State University medical school and wandered about the west side of the main university campus, ultimately arriving next to Langford Green. The afternoon was bright, with dry air and a temperature that everyone wants their home to be at. The race is put on by FSUCares, a student organization dedicated to bringing health care to the needy both here and abroad.
