Zimmerman and Williams winners at Owl Run

On a clear, bright Thursday morning on 1 October 2009, Cece Williams of Deerlake Middle School ran 13:26 for the win in the girls' two-mile at Gretchen Everhart School's 20th annual Owl Run. Deerlake's Cade Zimmerman won the boy's two-mile with an 11:33, but Augusta Raa took the team honors in both races.

The girls raced first. Williams moved to the front early and was never out of the lead after the first quarter mile. She finished a comfortable six seconds ahead of runner-up Camille Baker of Raa, but the Raa Rams also had third- and fourth-place finishes by Ursula McPherson-Vitkus and Rebecca Clendinen respectively. For a cross-country team, having three runners score only nine points is much like a golfer shooting ten double-eagles in a round of golf. Led by that strong showing by their top three, the Rams triumphed 40 to 43 over Swift Creek in the team standings.

In the boys' two mile, Zimmerman was still being challenged for the lead during the first half mile, but soon took sole command of the race as his challengers faded. He crossed the finish line 34 seconds ahead of second place. Zimmerman's 11:33 rates as the second-best time ever at the Owl Run, faster than times recorded by the likes of University of Tennessee trackman Joe Franklin. Only Will Stanford of Raa (currently running for Leon High School) has run faster on the Owl Run course. Behind Zimmerman, Jack Rutledge, another Deerlake runner, moved up through the field, eventually finishing in the runner-up spot at 12:07. Brennan Borgestad also profited from the mistakes of runners who went out to fast, passing several along the way to finish third in 12:32. Deerlake and Raa each put three runners in the top ten, but the superiority of Raa's fourth and fifth runners gave the Rams the edge 45 to 49 over Deerlake.
