Meadows and Goodson get it done in the dark

Saturday, 5 September 2015, wasn't a school night, so Springfield (Tennessee) High frosh cross country runner Wyatt Meadows had permission to be up past midnight. The other athletes in Panama City Beach's 36th annual Midnight Chase 5K will be be advocating a stricter curfew for the Tennessee schoolboy, though, because Meadows won the race in 19:22, finishing in front of a field of 72.


The race went out and back over the Hathaway Bridge, the span carrying US 98 between Panama City Beach and Panama City. "Tracy Burch, Justin Williams, Wyatt Meadows, Scott Meadows, Jerome McCray, and Dan Station all ran the first thousand meters in a tight pack," reported Mark McCarra. "McCrary fell back just before the mile marker."


That was the first time over the bridge. On the return trip, Wyatt Meadows opened a gap on the lead pack. No one had an answer for his surge, and Meadows went on to win by well over 100 meters in 19:22. Justin Williams took second in 19:52. Dan Station took the top master spot, finishing third overall in 20:08.


Cindi Goodson led the women's standings, placing 14th overall in 27:03. Master runner Cassie Logan edged Shelle McDonald for the second women's spot, 27:29 to 27:31. Logan and McDonald were 16th and 17th overall.
