Peel and the Lady Seminoles win at Covered Bridge

SeminoleIn the debut meet of Florida State women's cross country coach Kelly Phillips, the Lady Seminoles won Appalachian State's Covered Bridge Open in Boone, North Carolina, on Friday evening, 4 September 2015. Led by the first place finish of senior Georgia Peel, Florida State totaled a nearly unbeatable score of 29 points. The Seminole men didn't fare nearly as well, placing third in their race while the Florida Gators scored 32 points for the win.


It was the Lady Seminoles first visit to Boone since a 2013 win in the Covered Bridge Open. Behind Peel's 17:45 win in the women's 5K race, Florida State put three other runners in the top ten: Carmela Cardama Baez (3rd, 18:03), Bridget Blake (4th, 18:04), and Christine Griggs (10th, 18:33). The Lady Gators also put four runners in the top ten--Georgia Larsen (2nd, 18:00), Taylor Tubbs (5th, 18:04), Becky Greene (6th, 18:06), and Elisabeth Bergh (9th, 18:30). But Florida State's fifth runner, Courteney West, sealed the win for the Lady Seminoles, placing 11th in 18:40. That gave Florida State 29 points and the top spot in a five-team field. Florida was second with 42 points, and hosts Appalachian State third with 54.

Things started out well for the Seminoles in the men's 6400-meter race. Florida State senior Jack Goodwin won the race in 20:03, and junior Stanley Linton placed third for the Seminoles in 20:16. While Florida State waited for their third finisher, Florida put four runners across the line--Eddie Garcia (4th, 20:19), Jimmy Clark (5th, 20:20) Charles Chambers (6th, 20:26), and Carlos Miranda (7th, 20:31). Florida State's Bryce Kelley placed ninth in 20:34, but then Florida frosh Jack Guyton took tenth in 20:38, clinching the win for the Gators. Led by the 20:03 second-place finish of Mike Ellis, Appalachian State scored 60 points, tied for second with the Florida State men.
