It's just a little over thirty miles from Tallahassee, Florida, to Thomasville, Georgia. Tallahassee athlete Peter Kaus made that short trip on Saturday morning, 12 September 2015, to win the third annual Patriot Run. Kaus finished the 6K cross country race in a course record 23:06, while another Tallahassee athlete, Geb Kiros, was the top master runner, placing second overall in 24:09. Thomasville's Beverly Hamilton won the women's title in 29:32, and Nancy Herring of Thomasville was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, coming in 22nd overall in 34:50. 96 athletes finished the 3.73-mile race.A steady shower was falling on Thomasville the morning of the Patriot Run 6K. Now, if there is anything more fun than running cross country, it's running cross country in the rain. Some folks may not realize that, though, which would explain why participation in the race was down from the 2014 high water mark of 165 finishers. Still, nearly 100 athletes did show up to enjoy the weather and a run through Myrtlewood Plantation. Among those were the winner, Peter Kaus, and runner-up Geb Kiros. Dan Butzin came from Valdosta, Georgia, and finished third in 25:06. Master runner Chad Johnson was the first Thomasville finisher, placing fourth overall in 27:33.
Beverly Hamilton had won the Patriot Run women's title in 2013, setting the women's course record. Hamilton had to settle for second in the women's division in 2014, but at the 2015 race she regained the title, placing eighth overall in 29:32. Thomasville runners Cammie Hungerford (12th, 32:18) and Tiffany Nunnally (16th, 32:56) were second and third in the women's standings.
"It was muddy, it was raining, I wasn't in racing shape," said runner-up Geb Kiros. "But there was a lake and nature all around. I enjoyed it."
Timing and finish line services for the 2015 Stars and Stripes Patriot Run 6K were provided by A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia.
