Darton State College dropped its cross country program in 2015, a loss for which Albany, Georgia, and the sport is poorer. But it's still possible to run and even to race on the Darton State campus, which is exactly where Deerfield-Windsor School Knights hosted the Darton Dash cross country meet on Saturday morning, 12 September 2015.The rainy day of competition started with the high school girls' 5K. Unfazed by the weather, Ivie Nobles of Twiggs Academy won the race by close to 50 meters, running 21:00. Sophie Davis of Mill Springs was second in 21:12, and Valwood athlete Riley O'Linn edged Thomas County Central's Cara Eaton for third, 21:38 to 21:42.
Then it was Deerfield-Windsor's turn. The Knights put all five of their scorers in the top 14--Camryn Bridges (5th, 21:55), Parker Morgan (8th, 22:32), Flannery Daugherty (9th, 22:42), Charlotte Augenstein (13th, 22:35), and Deena Wilcox (14th, 23:44). Those five gave Deerfield-Windsor 35 points and the team title, the third Darton Dash title the Deerfield-Windsor girls had won in the last three years. Led by Sydney Hayes (7th, 22:23) Southland Academy was second with 63 points. Thomas County Central was third with 76.

Going by history, you'd conclude that the winner of the Darton Dash high school boys' 5K must be a Trinity Christian student named McLeod. That pattern held up in 2015, but whereas the winning McLeod was Kaleb McLeod in 2013 and 2014, in 2015 it was Trinity Christian senior Jacob McLeod. Jacob McLeod ran 16:55, winning the race by more than a hundred meters. Southland Academy sophomore Wright Calhoun was second in 17:16, and Mill Springs junior Sam Lynch was third in 17:41.
Trinity Christian also had a second runner in the top ten, sophomore Quillian Holland (4th, 17:49). However, it takes five finishers to have a cross country team, and Trinity Christian only had three that day. Southland Academy, on the other hand, had a full team, with four runners in the top ten--Wright Calhoun (2nd, 17:16), Billy Calcutt (7th, 18:32), Brian Miller (8th, 18:42), and Ridge Holland (10th, 19:26). But while Southland was waiting for their fifth runner, Thomas County Central put all five of their scorers across the finish line--seniors Sam Gelabert (5th, 18:09) and Conley Wilhelm (6th, 18:15), junior Brandon Taylor (14th, 20:01), sophomore Parker Dixon (15th, 20:03), and senior Reshad Daniels (20th, 20:34). Those five athletes totaled 39 points, just enough to beat Southland's 40 and win the meet. Host Deerfield-Windsor's boys were third with 63 points.
