Successful Sickle Cell 5K returns for Kiros and Barnes

In 2014, Florida A & M University biostatistics professor Geb Kiros raced the Sickle Cell 5K and ran 18:43, placing fourth. On Saturday morning, 10 September 2016, Kiros was back in the Jake Gaither neighborhood of Tallahassee, Florida for the 35th annual Sickle Cell 5K. This time Kiros ran over a minute faster, winning the race in 17:41. Brittney Barnes made her own return to the race; after finishing as the top woman in the 2015 Sickle Cell 5K, Barnes took a second women's title in the 2016 event, placing fifth overall in 20:05.

The race started just after 8:30 AM in front of the Jake Gaither Community Center, heading east on Bragg Drive. Geb Kiros was soon setting the pace for the field, and by the two-kilometer mark he had a 100-meter lead on the second-place runner, Trey Edwards. Eric Godin was just a few steps farther back, and caught Edwards early in the second half of the race. There was no catching Kiros, though. The Tallahassee master runner had widened his lead to nearly 200 meters by the time he crossed the finish line back at the Jake Gaither Community Center, first in 17:41. Godin took second in 18:21, and Edwards was third in 18:45.

In the women's competition Brittney Barnes had an even wider winning margin, finishing well over 600 meters ahead of the next woman. Barnes led from the start and was never challenged during the 20:05 it took her to reach the finish line. Tallahassee master runner Lyssa Oberkreser overtook Michelle Hadden during the final kilometer of the race to take the women's runner-up spot in 23:08, placing tenth overall. Close behind, Hadden was third in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 23:10.


227 athletes finished the 2016 Sickle Cell 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed the race. The event is an annual benefit of the Sickle Cell Foundation, Inc.
