Elizabeth Funderburk runs a scorching 18:20 at the Deerfield Invitational

Deerfield-Windsor School KnightMaybe it's all about marketing and branding.

Because not much really changed about the Deerfield Invitational cross country meet. It was still held on the Albany, Georgia campus of Darton College. The time of year was about the same; 24 September 2016 was close to the date that the meet had been held in previous years. Deerfield-Windsor School hosted, as always. The name had changed, though, from "Deerfield-Windsor Darton Dash" to "Deerfield Invitational." And maybe that change of brand was what it took to produce the largest Deerfield Invitational ever, as more than 600 athletes and 51 teams came to Darton College to run four cross country races.

The first of the four races was the high school boys' 5K. In an exciting finish, Tiftarea sophomore Dallas Hunt held off Ethan Merritt of Deerfield-Windsor and Brishen House of Lowndes to take the title. The three finished within a few second of each other, with Hunt clocked in 17:07, Merritt in 17:10, and House in 17:11.

Merritt may have lost a close race, but he had the satisfaction of being on the winning team. Deerfield-Windsor's top five of House, Porter Hill (6th, 17:38), Graham Ford (12th, 18:30), Drew Griffin (22nd, 18:54), and Joe Tondera (23rd, 18:59) combined to give the host team 65 points and first in the team standings. Led by sophomore Collin Bertram (11th, 18:17), Augusta Prep totalled 107 points to take second. Lee County took third with 116 points behind their ace, the fourth place finish of their ace, junior Colby Jones (17:18).

There was no drama up front in the high school girls' 5K. When Colquitt County junior Elizabeth Funderburk crossed the finish line in a winning 18:20, she was almost 400 meters ahead of the next runner. It was more than a minute faster than any other girl had run at the Deerfield Invitational in the entire four-year history of the meet. Jamie Holodak of Augusta Prep was second in 19:46, and Alli Hay of Pataula Charter was third in 20:03.

Including Holodak, Augusta Prep put three runners in the top ten, with Molly Joseph sixth in 21:07 and Katy Earwood tenth in 21:49.
