Seven days before the GHSA state cross-country championships, you'd think that Valdosta High cross-country runner Austin Wallace would be conserving his energy, getting ready for the big race. Especially when it was only two days after Wallace placed fifth in the GHSA Region 1-5A race. But unfortunately for nearly 300 runners in the eighth annual St John School 5K road race, Wallace stepped out to race with them through the streets of Valdosta, Georgia on October 29. The Valdosta High junior won the race, edging out Valdosta's Masked Avenger 17:44 to 17:47. Lowndes High student Kevin Ramos was third, half a kilometer back in 19:45. Fourth place went to Valdosta State University sophomore cross-country runner Stephen King in 19:56, while St John School cross-country runner Matthew Baun placed fifth in 20:03. A week earlier Baun had placed 15th in the Georgia Middle School State Cross-Country Championships. Sixth place and the top master spot belonged to Rick Mazurkiewicz of Valdosta, who ran 20:07.Amy Sharon of Valdosta was the fastest woman in the field, running 21:27 to finish eleventh overall. Valdosta's Stella Barrutia was the female runner-up, narrowly beating Angela Bruhl of Quitman for that spot, 22:22 to 22:25.
The race started and finished at St John The Evangelist Catholic School in Valdosta, Georgia. Proceeds of the race went to benefit the school.
