William Carter and Cheryl Moore score a Perry sweep at the Colin Kelly 5K

The Colin Kelly 5K is a race with many names. You might see it being called the Down Home Days Fitness Run 5K. Or the Sentinel Sprint 5K. Or the North Florida Community College 5K. But on Saturday morning, 27 April 2019, after the Colin Kelly 5K was run once again around the Madison, Florida campus of North Florida Community College, the name of the winner wasn't in question. That name was William Carter. The Perry, Florida master runner was first overall, running 21:02. Cheryl Moore, another Perry master runner, was the first woman in the race, placing fifth overall in 25:22.


It wasn't Carter's first time winning the Colin Kelly race. He had won the race in 2015 and 2017, as well as finishing runner-up in 2018. There was a battle for that second spot in the 2019 race, with Cezar Araiza outkicking Isaias Lopez 24:27 to 24:28.


Master runner Julie Maultsby placed second in the women's standings, coming in seventh overall in 26:32. Tina Tucker was the third woman and eighth overall in 27:06.


21 athletes finished the 2019 Colin Kelly 5K. The race was Saturday's first event in Madison's annual Down Home Days Festival.

Ryan Kelly and Chandra Smith lead the way at the Sentinel Sprint 5K

Madison, Florida's annual 5K road race has been around for more than 30 years. Over the decades it has been called the Colin P. Kelly 5K, the Colin Kelly Fitness Run, and the Down Home Days Fitness Run. On Saturday morning, 21 April 2018, the race was back with another new name, the Sentinel Sprint 5K, and a new course on the North Florida Community College Campus. The 5K also crowned a new champion, Ryan Kelly of Lake Park, Georgia. Kelly, the Valdosta High cross-country coach, won the Sentinel Sprint by close to 700 meters, running 18:15. Master runner Chandra Smith was the first woman in the race, placing thirteenth overall in 28:20.


William Carter of Perry, Florida was the first master runner in the 5K, placing second overall in 21:13. Carter was the overall winner of the race in 21:13. Dylan Gulmette, who had been fifth in the 2016 race and third in 2017, took third in 2018 with a 22:04.


Master runner Mary Carter was second in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 28:39. Another veteran of the race, Carter had been third in the women's standings in both 2016 and 2017. In a tight race for the third women's spot, Keisha Martinez (30:13) edged Tina Tucker (30:16) and Brandi Browning. Martinez, Tucker, and Browning were eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth overall.


52 athletes finished the 2018 Sentinel Sprint 5K.

Carter and Gamalero lead Madison's Colin Kelly 5K

Proverbially, March winds bring April showers. But in Madison, Florida the month of April brings the Down Home Days Festival, and with the Festival comes the Colin P. Kelly 5K. On Saturday, 22 April 2017, master runner William Carter of Perry, Florida won the annual race, covering the hilly 3.1-mile course through Madison in 20:48. Madison's Melissa Gamelero took the women's title, placing seventh overall in 24:54.


Behind Carter, 2014 Colin Kelly 5K champ Tommy Langford posted a 21:17 to finish runner-up for the second year in a row. Dylan Guilmette was third in 21:27; Guilmette had finished fifth in the 2016 race.


Jennifer Harper was second to Gamalero in the women's standings, placing tenth overall in 26:51. Mary Carter was the top woman master and third female finisher in the 5K, eleventh overall in 27:20.


30 athletes finished the 2017 Colin P. Kelly 5K.

Bueno and Escalera triumph at the Colin P. Kelly 5K

Madison, Florida is justly proud of its heroic son, Colin Purvis Kelly. North of town the Colin Kelly Highway is named in his honor. On the North Florida Community College Campus the Colin P. Kelly Fitness Center bears his name. Finally, each year athletes race through the street of Madison in the Colin P. Kelly 5K Fitness Run. In the past it was known as the Colin P. Kelly Freedom Run, but the army aviator's name has always been on the race.


Echols County High cross country runner Joe Bueno won the 16 April 2016 installment of the Colin P. Kelly 5K, finishing the Saturday morning race in 19:54. Tommy Langford, the winner of the 2014 Colin P. Kelly 5K, took second in 20:18. Madison County High sophomore Marvin Alexander edged William Carter for third, 21:36 to 21:41. Carter, the defending champion of the race, finished as the top master runner in this year's event.


Jackie Escalera was the first female finisher in the 5K; sixteen-year-old Escalera was thirteenth overall in 25:53. Maria Smith was runner-up on the women's side, coming in fourteenth overall in 26:15. Mary Carter was the top woman master and third female finisher, placing fifteenth overall in 27:20.


53 athletes finished the 3.1-mile race. The 2016 Colin P. Kelly 5K Fitness Run was part of Madison County's annual Down Home Days Festival.

Four Freedoms Rail Trail expansion under way

On a 27 November 2010 visit to the Four Freedoms Rail Trail north of Madison, Florida, I discovered that after years of promises and rumors, the trail is being extended southward into Madison. Over six miles of new trail has been graded between Madison and Hanson and the blacktop can't be far behind. I saw one pair of cyclists who couldn't wait for the pavement; they were already pedaling the freshly graded dirt of the extension.


The current trail stretches five-and-a-half miles from Hanson north through Pinetta and on to the Withlachoochee River and the Florida-Georgia state line. When the addition is complete, the trail will be just over twelve miles from Madison to the Withlacoochee. The new trail construction is part of a Florida Department of Transportation project to improve and resurface State Road 145, the Colin Kelly Highway. Most of the new section of trail will run along the east side of SR 145; just south of Hanson it will cross to the west side of the highway where it will meet up with the existing trail on the north side of Hanson.


With a new southern terminus in Madison, just off of US Highway 90, the extended Four Freedoms Trail will be more accessible than before when the only trailheads were in relatively remote Hanson and Pinetta. A twelve-mile trail should also attract a wider range of cyclists than the current five-and-a-half mile trail, pulling in more tourists with bike racks. With views of farming country alternating with stretches of woodland, the new trail will be worth exploring just for the scenery. Stay alert for news that the trail is ready for rolling.
