LaBossiere and Rosen reign at Medical Response Unit 5K

Michael LaBossiere"Make sure you title your report, 'LaBossiere crushes Rosen,'" Mike LaBossiere told me after the race.

As immodest as his phrasing may seem, LaBossiere did indeed outrun Sheryl Rosen and everyone else in the Florida State Univerity Medical Response Unit's fifth annual 5K race on Saturday morning, 25 January 2014. The master runner from Maine ran 20:27 over the 3.1-mile course around the FSU campus. Sheryl Rosen won the women's title for the second year in a row, finishing third overall in 21:36, a step behind her younger brother Matt Rosen (2nd, 21:35).

Matt Rosen and Sheryl RosenThe race started and finished at the Integration Statue on Woodward Plaza, in the heart of the FSU campus. At 9:00 AM the runners were set loose. Nicholas Tremblay darted out into the lead, but about a kilometer into the race, on Honors Way, Tremblay was overtaken by Mike LaBossiere. Sheryl Rosen, running with her younger brother, Matt, passed Tremblay later, and so did Wakulla High cross-country coach Paul Hoover. No one was catching LaBossiere, though. The Florida A & M University philosophy professor finished the race more than 250 meters ahead of the next runner, posting a 20:27. Matt Rosen sprinted ahead of his sister to take the runner-up spot in 21:35. Sheryl Rosen was right behind him in third at 21:36, the first female finisher. Paul Hoover was fourth overall in 22:00, and early leader Nicholas Tremblay was fifth with a 27:56.

The Florida State University Medical Response Unit is on hand at all campus events to provide emergency medical services if needed. Included among those events are the many road races run around the FSU campus. The MRU even saved the life of an athlete who collapsed near the finish of the Tallahassee Marathon. The FSU MRU's support of so many running events seems to be taken for granted, though, because so few people turn out to support the MRU 5K. Here's hoping that changes in the future.
