Josiah Friddle and Madelyn Gortemoller run like the devil at the Tate's Hell 5K

Tate's Hell 5KIf you want to win a road race on Florida's Forgotten Coast, you'd better plan on outrunning Josiah Friddle. During 2023 and 2024, Friddle notched victories at the Red Pepper 5K on Saint George Island and the Half Shell Hustle 5K in Apalachicola. And on Saturday morning, 5 October 2024, the Franklin County High senior added the Tate's Hell 5K title to his collection of laurels. Friddle took first in 18:45, winning the Carrabelle, Florida race by mpre than 400 meters. Madalyn Gortemoller was the first woman in the 5K, coming in fifth overall in 23:06.


Michael Martinez of Tallahassee, Florida was the first master runner in the race, placing runner-up to Friddle in 20:32. Edward Nabong took third with a 20:53.


Addyson Paul was second in the women's standings, placing eighth overall in 24:06. Krista Callahan was the third woman and ninth overall in 24:34. At 27:27, Anna Bull was the first woman master, the fourth female finisher, and thirteenth overall.


58 athletes finished the 2024 Tate's Hell And Back 5K.

Duane Evans and Alexis Mayfield lead the field at the Tate's Hell 5K

Tate's Hell 5KFlorida's Tate's Hell Swamp is purportedly named after Cebe Tate, who, as the tale goes, got lost in the swamp near Sumatra and wandered for miles, snakebit and feverish, before stumbling out again near Carrabelle.


The athletes in the eighth annual Tate's Hell And Back 5K had an easier time of it than the storied Cebe. Instead of a trackless slog through the swamp, on Saturday morning, 7 October 2023, they had a well-marked run on the grounds of Carrabelle, Florida's Saint James Bay Golf Resort. Crawfordville, Florida master runner Duane Evans took first in the 5K, running 20:42. Alexis Mayfield, a member of the Swift Creek Middle School girls' cross-country team, was overall runner-up and first in the women's division with a 21:02.


It was the second Tate's Hell 5K win for Evans, who had also won the race in 2021. Christopher Coddington was second to Evans in the men's standings, placing third overall in 21:21. Chris Matechik was the third male finisher and fifth overall in 23:39.


Laura McDermott was the first woman master in the race as well as the second female finisher, fourth overall in 22:56. A teacher at Buck Lake Elementary in Tallahassee, Florida, McDermnott is also a coach of the Swift Creek team that Alexis Mayfield belongs to. Jessica Brieno took third in the women's standings with a 24:21.


The Tate's Hell 5K was run in conjunction with Carrabelle's Bay Fest, an annual charity event.

Tate Danford and Liliana Lewis run to Hell and back

2019 Tate's Hell And Back 5KLet's get one thing straight up front. The Tate's Hell And Back 5K in Carrabelle, Florida is named for the notorious Panhandle Florida swamp, Tate's Hell. The swamp itself is purportedly named after Cebe Tate, an early settler in Sumatra, Florida, who got lost in the swamp while hunting. The story had it that Tate finally blundered out of the swamp near Carrabelle, suffering from a rattlesnake bite, blood poisoning, hunger, exhaustion, and numerous other afflictions. "I've been in Hell," he said before dying.


I mention this to make clear that there is almost certainly no relation between Tate's Hell and the man who won the fourth annual Tate's Hell And Back 5K on Saturday morning, 27 April 2019--master runner Tate Danford. The race may not have been named for Danford, but he did take first, running 22:37. Liliana Lewis, the seventh-grade ace of the Wakulla Middle School girls' cross-country team, won the women's title, running from Carrabelle to Tate's Hell and back in 23:38, good for second overall.


Master runner David DeHaye took second in the men's standings, placing third overall in 24:05.


Sara Collins was the second woman in the race and fourth overall in 24:47. Collins had been the women's champ at the inaugural Tate's Hell And Back 5K.


Master runner Richard Metcalfe was the third male finisher and fifth overall in 24:52.


Nancy Lewis was the first woman master and third female finisher in the 5K, placing ninth overall in 26:31.


83 athletes finished the 2019 Tate's Hell And Back 5K. The Tate's Hell And Back 5K will return to Carrabelle for a fifth annual running during the Carrabelle Riverfront Festival on Saturday morning, 25 April 2020.

Chance Logan makes a fast trip to Tate's Hell And Back

Tate's Hell And Back 5KThe legend has it that nearly two hundred years ago, Cebe Tate got lost in the swamps near his home in Sumatra, Florida. His experiences were so horrific that he died soon after finding his way out near Carrabelle. In memory of his tale, the swamp is called "Tate's Hell."


According to Will McLean's version of the story, Tate was twelve days--"a full week and then five days more"--making it into the swamp and back. Present day travelers spend less time getting in and out of Tate's Hell, sometimes less than twenty minutes. On Saturday morning, 28 April 2018, Chance Logan won the third annual Tate's Hell And Back 5K in Carrabelle, running 18:23. Chelsea Marshall-Hirvela was the first woman in the race, placing tenth overall in 26:17.


Arden Olson was the fastest master runner in the 5K; he was second overall in 22:05. Austin Gray, a frosh year cross-country runner at Franklin County High, took third overall in 22:16.


Just a few seconds behind women's champ Chelsea Marshall-Hirvela, Laura Garey was second in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 26:22. Christine Lamia was the top woman master and third female finisher, placing fourteenth overall in 27:18.


89 athletes finished the 2018 Tate's Hell And Back 5K. The race is one of the events of the annual Carrabelle Riverfront Festival, so look for the fourth annual Tate's Hell And Back 5K on 27 April 2019.

Collins and Hooke win a Hell of a race in Carrabelle

2017 Tate's Hell And Back 5KAccording to legend, Cebe Tate blundered into the Florida Panhandle's most notorious swamp, never to return to his home in Sumatra. Although Tate did make it out of the swamp near Carrabelle, Florida after much suffering, the effects of the ordeal proved fatal and he perished before he could make his way back home. You know the story is true, because the swamp is named after him: Tate's Hell.


The athletes in Carrabelle's most notorious road race do Tate one better. They run into Tate's Hell swamp, but they also run back out again. Thus the name of the race--the Tate's Hell and Back 5K.


Master runner Mark Collins was the first to return from the swamp on Saturday morning, 22 April 2017, winning the second annual Tate's Hell And Back 5K in 22:33. Collins had been third in the inaugural race in 2016. Melissa Hooke was the first woman across the finish line, edging 2016 women's champ Sara Collins 22:37 to 22:43. Hooke was second overall and Sara Collins third overall.


68 athletes finished the 2017 Tate's Hell And Back 5K.

Ryan Slyter leads over 100 athletes to Hell and back

2016 Tate's Hell And Back 5KThey still had music class when I was in elementary school in Tallahassee, Florida. I don't think any of us became Carnegie Hall material, but we did get to sing quite a few songs, including Florida folk musician Will McLean's ballad "Tate's Hell." I still remember every word of that one, probably because of the story's appeal to the imagination of a ten-year-old boy. Apparently there was a vast swamp full of monstrous creatures just south of us. Alligators! Panthers! Rattlesnakes! A man, Cebe Tate, had blundered into the swamp near Sumatra and spent nearly two weeks lost and delirious before crawling out near Carrabelle and dying. I had no idea where Sumatra was, but Carrabelle was a real place on the way to the beach, so the story must be true.


As it turns out, Tate's Hell is a real swamp, although I've never spent enough time there to encounter anything fiercer than a pitcher plant or a litter of baby raccoons. Most of the land is in Florida's Tate's Hell State Forest. So when So when plans were made for a 5K in Carrabelle to benefit the Franklin County Senior Center, it was decided that the runners would go to Hell and back. Specifically, they would start at the Carrabelle Christian Center, run to Tate's Hell, then turn around and return by the same route. The athletes would only go to the edge of Tate's Hell State Forest, though--no need for anyone to end up like Cebe Tate.


Most of the Tate's Hell State Forest is in Franklin County, so you'd have to think that the County Forester, Ryan Slyter, would know the swamp as well as anyone. Perhaps that knowledge was Slyter's advantage in the inaugural Tate's Hell and Back 5K on Saturday morning, 23 April 2016. Slyter won the race by nearly 400 meters, running the 3.1-miles in 16:47. Tallahassee master runner Michael Martinez took second in 18:10, and Mark Collins was third in 22:13.


Sara Collins edged Krista Wharton in a close race for the women's title, 22:27 to 22:29. The two runners were fourth and fifth overall. Kate Wharton was third in the women's standings and tenth overall in 24:35.


104 athletes finished the inaugural Tate's Hell and Back 5K. The event raised $2100 for the Franklin County Senior Citizens Center. Look for the second annual Tate's Hell and Back 5K in Carrabelle on Saturday, 22 April 2017, during the Carrabelle Riverfront Festival.
