Two weeks before the third annual Trailblazer 5K Run For Literacy in Tallahassee, Florida, Nate Kaiser had won the Gulf Winds Track Club 30K. In the shorter race, though, Kaiser couldn't quite handle Jack Redwing. On a chilly Saturday morning, 31 January 2015, Redwing outkicked Kaiser for the Trailblazer win, both runners clocked in a course-record 16:54. The 30K women's champion, Katie Sherron, fared better at the Trailblazer. Sherron took the women's title, finishing over 300 meters ahead of the next woman and posting a new Trailblazer women's record of 19:39. 278 athletes finished the 3.1-mile race.The Trailblazer was hosted by DeSoto Trail Elementary School PTO, and the school was the site of both the start and finish of the race. Jack Redwing, Nate Kaiser, and Zach DeVeau set the early pace. After three kilometers DeVeau dropped back from the lead group, and the race was Redwing vs. Kaiser--the former Boston College distance man vs. the former Aquinas College Academic All American. It came down to finishing speed, and Redwing (a 4:17 miler) prevailed over Kaiser (a 4:28 miler). DeVeau was third in 17:11. Maclay School coach Gary Droze finished ahead of Geb Kiros to take fourth place and the top master spot, 17:40 to 17:53.
In contrast to the men's competition, Katie Sherron didn't need to rely on a kick to get the women's win. Running in complete command of the race, Sherron placed 19th overall while running a winning time of 19:39, her fastest road 5K since the 2014 Palace Saloon race. Jillian Heddaeus was the women's runner up, finishing 27th overall in 21:05. Laura McDermott was third in the women's standings, coming in 37th overall in 21:55. Angela Dempsey was the fourth woman finisher and first woman master, 39th overall in 22:01.Finish line and timing services for the third annual Trailblazer 5K were provided by the Gulf Winds Track Club.
