The best bar none at the 2011 Snickers Marathon

Tesfaye Alemayehu left Albany, Georgia $3,000 richer after collecting the prize for winning the fifth-annual Snickers® Marathon® Energy Bar Marathon on Saturday, 5 March 2011. In winning the title, Alemayehu, an Ethiopian runner based in Antioch, California, set a new course record of 2:17:10, breaking James Boitt's 2009 record of 2:19:01. Snickers wasn't Alemayehu's first marathon of the year; he had already posted a 2:12:57 win at the ING Miami Marathon on 30 January 2011.

Behind Alemayehu, Michael Green of Troy, Alabama finished second in 2:20:20, collecting a $2,000 prize for his efforts. Taking third place and $1,000, David Kellum of Kennesaw, Georgia ran 2:25:14. After visitors had taken home all the loot, the first local finisher, Albany's David Marley, crossed the line in fourth place at 2:36:18. James Cheruiyot, the 2010 Tallahassee Marathon champion, was fifth at 2:44:47. The first master runner was Phil Young of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, placing sixth overall at 2:47:58.

Ludmila Stepanova led the women, running 2:43:15 and collecting the $3,000 first prize. Ekaterina Fateeva ran 2:49:09, good enough for the women's runner-up spot and $2,000, while Nadezhda Tuptova was the third woman in at 2:52:08.

631 athletes completed the marathon, which ran through the streets of Albany on USATF certified course GA07003WC, starting and finishing next to the Flint River. Another 816 runners settled for the half marathon, won by Jeffrey Ford of Hilton Head in 79:29 and Michelle McKenzie of Flowery Branch in 90:28.
