Finishing over 300 meters ahead of all comers, Valdosta's Masked Avenger raced around the Valdosta State University campus in 17:20 to win the Valdosta Symphony's second annual Music In Motion 5K on Saturday morning, 5 March 2011. It was the Avenger's fourth win in as many weeks. Finishing at 18:32 in the runner-up spot, Pete Madson of Omaha, Nebraska was the fastest master in the race. Behind Madson, three distance runners from Valdosta-area schools battled for third place, with Lowndes High freshman Tyler Thurman prevailing in 19:03. Matthew Baun of St. Johns was a few steps behind Thurman in 19:07, and Daniel Sullivan of Lowndes High followed at fifth in 19:24.
Valdosta's Alice Smoot placed sixth overall in 20:01 to finish as the top woman and top woman master. Smoot was coming off a win at Hahira's
Art Of Surviving 5K the previous Saturday. Julia Baun (13th, 21:56) was the next woman in, followed by Sarah VanKuiken (14th, 22:28).
After winning races on three straight weekends in February, the Masked Avenger extended his streak into March with his win at the Music In Motion 5K. The first three races in the Avenger's streak were the
Sweetheart 5K (February 12) in Valdosta, the
Hospice Half Marathon (February 19) near Dasher, and the
Art Of Surviving 5K (February 26) in Hahira. Could a fifth win come at Valdosta's Azalea 5K on March 12?
The Music In Motion 5K is a benefit for the Valdosta Symphony Guild. 52 athletes finished the second annual race, down from the 70 finishers of the inaugural event in 2010. A one-mile fun run followed the 5K.
