Behind Nesius, Dr. Michael LaBossiere and Brian Keno, and Dr. Volodymyr Zharkov battled for the master's title. Just four weeks earlier Zharkov had beaten out LaBossiere for master honors at the FSU First Responders Unit 5K. Keno, a visitor from south Florida, had finished as top master at the last race he had run at FSU, the Parents' Weekend 5K in October 2010. This time, though, it was LaBossiere who came out on top in the masters' division, placing fourth overall in 19:42. Keno was right on his heels in fifth at 19:48, with Zharkov chasing in sixth at 19:56.
In the race in the women's division, Vicky Droze and Paula O'Neill grabbed the lead from Sarah Cornell with about a kilometer to go, and then set about fighting each other for the win. Droze pulled away to take the women's title in 22:23, finishing 22nd overall. O'Neill settled for the runner-up spot and the women's master title, placing 24th overall in 22:35. Cornell hung on to third place, crossing the line 25th overall in 22:41.
193 athletes completed the race, which started and finished on the Mike Long Track. The race opened with a bizarre "preem," prizes for the first male and the first female to reach the 600-meter mark. With that out of the way, the runners left the track for the streets of campus and the remaining 4,400 meters of racing. The annual race is a fundraiser for the FSU chapter of Habitat For Humanity, which also holds and annual fall race.
