Erin Go "ARRGH!"

As a name for a 5K road race, "St. Patrick's Day Pirate Prowl" evokes some odd images. Buccaneers dressed in kelly green? Leprechauns wielding cutlasses? But the race was held on March 12, which was the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day. And proceeds went to Sneads High School's Project Graduation, and the Sneads High mascot is a pirate. Furthermore, St. Patrick only ended up in Ireland because as a boy he was kidnapped by Irish pirates. So the name makes perfect sense, right?

Whatever the title of the race, master runner Mark McCarra was the class of the race. McCarra, a personal trainer from Marianna, ran 21:06 on the roads around Sneads, winning by 70 meters. Finishing runner-up to McCarra was Jantzen Pelt of Marianna at 21:25. Trent McDaniel, a distance runner at Snead High School, placed third in 22:19. Kacie Rogers was the first woman finisher, placing ninth overall in 24:34. Marty Kirkland finished immediately after Rogers in 25:28, taking the top master woman's spot. A few steps behind Kirkland, Marianna's Ashley Merritt (11th, 25:32) was the third woman in, followed another 30 meters back by Cathy Akerson (12th, 25:41).

102 runners finished the race, which was run from Sneads Park on the southwest shore of Lake Seminole.

  1. I think a race officially entitled "Erin Go Arrgh!" might attract some attention -- especially with a race T-shirt based on a green jolly roger.

  2. I think you'd need something like that to distinguish yourself from the horde of St. Patrick's Day road races already in existence. There are almost as many of them as there are Turkey Trot road races.
