Road races in Tallahassee have been re-routed due to construction, held up by passing freight trains, or re-scheduled because of inclement weather. But the Ability First 5K on 26 March 2011 must have established a Capital City first when the police insisted that the course be changed to detour a crime scene. When Bill Lott was marking the course, he came upon the police roping off the location of a suspected suicide. In accordance with law enforcement demands, the race route was hurriedly changed. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough time to come up with a course that was actually five kilometers long, and the race ended up short.
Britain's Kev Mason didn't seem put out at all by the missing mileage. The Brighton & Cove Club runner raced to 15:53 victory, finishing over 200 meters ahead of runner-up Mike Nesius (2nd, 17:01). Mason declared it his American personal record for the distance. Well, maybe; if you keep personal records for 4872 meter runs. Or perhaps they don't worry about course certification in the United Kingdom.The fastest master runner in the race was the fastest woman in the race, Thomasville's Mary Anne Grayson, who posted a 19:05 for the not-quite-5K race, well ahead of women's runner up Summer Calder (11th, 22:02). The top male master was Chuck Davis, who finished seventh overall in 20:05, just a week after directing the Doggie Dash 5K.
82 athletes completed the race.
