Akbar in the Lion's Den

Florida State University distance runner Mark Akbar, notorious in the annals of Tallahassee distance running for his 2011 Devil Take The Hindmost victory, captured his second straight Bridge of Lions 5K title on Saturday morning, 27 July 2013. Akbar's time in the 29th annual St. Augustine race was 16:11, putting him comfortably ahead of the runner up, St. Augustine's Justin Taylor (16:27). Danny Flanderson of Jacksonville was the third of three runners who cracked 17:00 in the 3.1-mile run, clocking 16:44.

Kim Pawelek Brantly never ran the Devil Take The Hindmost, but she does deserve some notoriety in Tallahassee for having posted a 34:31.15 for 10,000 meters on FSU's Mike Long Track back in 1998. Brantly wasn't running quite that quickly at the 2013 Bridge of Lions, but she did run quickly enough to win her third women's title at the race, coming in 10th overall with an 18:26. The next two women across the finish line were Mallory Kennedy (12th, 18:39) of Daytona Beach and Megan Tramaglini (16th, 18:59) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Another Florida State University distance runner, Tallahassee's Carly Thomas, placed fourth in the women's standings, finishing 18th overall in 19:13.

820 athletes finished the 29th annual Bridge of Lions 5K.
