Eric van der Els goes 14:24 and Sarah Disanza 16:36 at the Matanzas 5000

2024 Matanzas 5000 logoUSATF certification of the course for Saint Augustine, Florida's Matanzas 5K expired in 2022. That means that the 2023 and 2024 races were run on an uncertified course. That's a shame, because the Matanzas 5000 bills itelf as "Florida's FASTEST 5K," and that's not entirely hype. For instance, at the 44th annual Matanzas 5000 on Saturday morning, 20 January 2024, three athletes broke 15:00. The fastest of those was Eric van der Els, who threw down a 14:24 for the win. Sarah Disanza was the women's champ, placing tenth overall in 16:36.

It wasn't van der Eles's fastest 5K performance; while a senior at the University of Connecticut he had run 13:36.28 on the track. But 14:24 was fast enough for the former Husky to shake off the other two athletes in the lead pack, Alec Sandusky and Jacob Klemz. Sandusy ended the race second in 14:30, while Klemz took third in 14:40.

Aaron Rowe was the fastest master runner in the race, placing seventh overall in 15:58.

Sarah Disanza's 16:36 put her 200 meters ahead of the next woman in the race, so she had little motive to run faster. Disanza has run faster, though. At the University of Wisconsin, she was a four-time NCAA All-American with a best of 15:20.57 in the 5000--a time that set a Big Ten conference record in the event.

Brittany Eberson finished runner-up to Disanza in the women's standings, placing 22nd overall in 17:16. Amelia Bjornson was the third woman and 34th overall in 17:53. Thirteen-year-old Peyton Cerasi, an eighth-grader at Indian Trails Middle School, ran 18:01 to take fourth in the women's division and 38th overall. Michelle McCreary of Ponte Vedra Beach was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, 41st overall in 18:06.

A cross-country preview? Menendez' Ryan Jones grabs a Bridge of Lions 5K win

Summer athletics in Florida isn't for the weak. In Saint Augustine on Saturday morning, 9 July 2022, temperatures had already reached 80 °F with high humidity when the 37th annual Bridge of Lions 5K got underway. Depsite the conditions, Ryan Jones tore through a 17:29 to win the 3.1-mile race by just over a hundred meters. Shannon Hickey Jones was the first woman in the field, going 18:46 and placing eighth overall.

A distance runner at Saint Augustine's Pedro Menendez High School, when Ryan Jones raced the Bridge of Lions 5K he was coming off a junior year track season where he lowered his 3200 PR to 10:14.58 and his 1600 time to 4:29.53. In the fall he will be competing in his senior year cross-country season with the Falcons.

Behind Jones, two master runners battled for the runner-up spot, Leonardo Canete and Jeremy Caudill. Caudill had the home course advantage, being from Saint Augustine. He had also won the race outright in 2018. Nevertheless, it was Canete, the visitor from Tallahassee, Florida, who prevailed, 17:51 to 17:53. Spencer Lawrence, a rising junior at Pedro Menendez high, took fourth in 18:07.

Shannon Hickey Jones had raced the 2021 Bridge Of Lions, finishing second in the women's standings with a 19:23. Runner-up wasn't good enough in 2022; Jones improved her time by over half a minute to 18:46, taking the women's title.

At 20:11, Julia Zalenski of Mars, Pennsylvania was the second woman and twentieth overall. Zalenski is headed into her senior year cross-country season at North Catholic High back in Pennsylvania. Another prep runner, Maddie Strong, was the third woman and 24th overall in 20:26. Strong is a rising junior at Scott High in Kentucky. Saint Augustine's Kristine Williams was the first woman master and eighth female finisher, 32nd overall in 21:32.

1035 athletes finished the 2022 Bridge of Lions 5K. RaceSmith chip-timed the event.

Alejandro Hernandez scores a 16:36 payback win at the Bridge of Lions 5K

Saint Augustine, Florida is not quite 500 years old, but it is indeed an old city. The city's Bridge of Lions is just under a century old, having been completed in 1927. The Bridge of Lions 5K is young in comparison--first contested in 1985, the 35th annual running of the race was on Saturday morning, 13 July 2019. The Bridge of Lions 5K rivalry between Alejandro Hernandez and Dr. Jeremy Caudill is younger still, having first emerged in the 2018 race. Hernandez came out on top in 2019, winning the 5K in 16:36 while Dr. Caudill took second in 16:55. Morgan Sharp won the women's title, placing 32nd overall in 20:14.

Dr. Caudill had won the 2018 race in 16:42, with Hernandez a close second in 16:48. This time, though, Hernandez wasn't going to be second to anyone. The former Connecticut College Camel cross-country runner's 16:36 was not only 2019's fastest mark, but also faster than anything posted at the Bridge of Lions since 2015. 2019 was Dr. Caudill's first Bridge of Lions race as a master runner, and his first time as the top master runner in the race.

Third place came down to a duel between Jasper Wilson, a recent alum of Chicamauga, Georgia's Gordon Lee High cross-country team, and Bela Schein, a junior-year harrier at Saint Augustine High. Wilson took the spot, edging Schein 17:31 to 17:33.

Morgan Sharp earned her first Bridge of Lions 5K women's title with her 20:21, but it wasn't the Saint Augustine native's first time racing the Bridge of Lions. Sharp first cracked the women's top ten in the event in 2018 as a recent alum of Saint Joseph Academy, placing seventh in the women's field in 22:01. After a year of racing cross-country for Florida Atlantic University, a much-improved Sharp was the women's champ in the 2019 race.

Just a few steps behind Sharp, Grace Kemerer, a cross-country runner at Case Western Reserve University, took second on the women's side and 33rd overall in 20:27. Tracy Dutra of Melbourne, Florida was the first woman master in the race and the third female finisher, 36th overall in 20:42. The second woman master was former Florida State Seminole distance runner Dr. Darien Andreu, fourth in the women's standings and 41st overall in 21:25.

1202 athletes finished the 2019 Bridge of Lions 5K. RaceSmith chip-timed the event.

Andrew Colley, Matt McClintock, and Joanna Thompson ZAP the field at the Matanzas 5000

ZAP Fitness is based in North Carolina, but during the winter months you're likely to see ZAP athletes training on the Apalachee Regional Park Cross-Country Course or some other Tallahassee, Florida trail. But on Saturday morning, 26 January 2019, you would have seen ZAP's Andrew Colley and Matt McClintock in Saint Augustine, Florida flashing across the finish line of the 39th annual Matanzas 5K in a dead heat for first place. Another ZAP Fitness star, Joanna Thompson, was the first woman in the race, placing ninteenth overall in 17:05.

The officials gave Colley the win over McClintock, but both runners were clocked in 14:26. About thirty meters behind them, their ZAP teammate Joe Stilin took third in 14:31. Yet another ZAP runner, University of Florida alum Josh Izewski, was fourth in 14:46. Jacksonville, Florida's Kristopher Shold of the PRS Racing Team was fifth in 15:25. Apparently, you need to be a ZAP runner to break 15:00. Brian Shrout of Jacksonville was the first master runner in the race, placing eighth overall in 15:50. John Sorensen, the first prep runner in the 5K, was just behind Shrout, ninth overall in 15:57. Sorensen, a senior at Fernandina Beach High, was an All-State cross-country runner in Florida during the 2018 season.

In the 2018 Matanzas, Francine Nzilampa and Lydia McRae had finished just a single second apart, taking seventh and eighth in the women's standings. They were close again in the standings of the 2019 race, with Flagstaff-based Nzilampa running 17:54 for the second women's spot and 28th overall, while Jacksonville's McRae was the third woman and 31st overall in 18:01. Amelia Williams took fourth on the women's side and 37th overall in 18:15. Laura Roberts of Saint Simons Island, Georgia was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, 52nd overall in 19:15.

985 athletes finished the 2019 Matanzas 5K.

St Augustine surgeon Jeremy Caudill runs a winning 16:42 at the Bridge of Lions 5K

As the oldest city in the United States, Saint Augustine, Florida is full of architectural landmarks, including Castillo de San Marcos, the Saint Augustine lighthouse, and the Bridge of Lions. Each July since 1985 the bridge has also drawn the attention of distance runners coming the Ancient City for the Bridge of Lions 5K. Saint Augustine's own Dr. Jeremy Caudill won the 34th annual Bridge of Lions race on Saturday morning, 14 July 2018, edging out Alejandro Hernandez of Miami, Florida 16:42 to 16:48. Ormond Beach, Florida athlete Stefanie Braun took the women's title, placing fifteenth overall in 19:52.

Behind the battle between Caudill and Hernandez, Terrance Sessoms of Jacksonvile, Florida ran 16:58 for third. A Sandalwood High alum, Sessoms just finished his first year of running cross-country and track at Savannah State. Shad McGrew, who spent the 2017 cross-country season running for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, placed fourth in 17:23. Leo Fila of Ponte Vedra, Florida was the top master runner in the race and ninth overall in 19:01.

Women's champ Stefanie Braun was from Ormond Beach, and so was the women's runner-up, Mallory Kennedy. Kennedy finished twentieth overall in 20:24. A few steps behind Kennedy, Claire McDonnell, a rising junior on the Father Lopez High cross-country team, was third in the women's standings and 22nd overall in 20:27.

Isabel Torres-Padin, who runs cross-country at Case Western Reserve University, was the fourth woman and 24th overall in 20:54. Tracy Dutra of Melbourne, Florida was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, 28th overall in 21:04.

1090 athletes finished the 2018 Bridge of Lions 5K. RaceSmith chip-timed the event.

14:08, 14:08, and 14:10 for La Mere, Kenyon, and Izewski at the Matanzas 5000

Saint Augustine's 38th annual Matanzas 5K was the Road Runners of America's 2018 state championship road 5K in Florida. The 27 January 2018 event was everything you want a championship race to be. Up front, Ian La Mere inched by Garrett Kenyon for the title, both runners clocked in 14:08. Joshua Izewski was a few strides back in 14:10. The women's competition was nearly as close, with Anne-Marie Blaney holding off Chelsea Blaase for first, 15:54 to 15:58. You want numbers? Nearly 900 athletes finished the race.

Less than a year earlier, La Mere had been competing in NCAA DIII for the Wisconsin-Plattville Pioneers. Even more recently, nine days before the Matanzas 5K, La Mere was racing with Team USA in Scotland at the Great Edinburgh International Cross Country. About the same time that La Mere was finishing up his career with Wisconsin-Plattville, runner-up Garrett Kenyon was concluding his senior year at Creighton. Third-place runner Joshua Izewski was racing closer to his alma mater; Izewski had done his collegiate running for the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Farther down in the standings, Team Florida Track Club's Enoch Nadler was fourth in 14:18--ten seconds faster than his winning time in the 2013 Matanzas 5K. Johnny Crain of ZAP Fitness, taking a quick trip from his team's winter training camp in Tallahassee, placed fifth in 14:26.

As a Central Florida Knight, Anne-Marie Blaney was the NCAA-D1 South Region Cross-Country champion in 2016. That was a 6K race. Just over a year later, Blaney is now the RRCA Florida state 5K women's champion after placing twelfth overall in 15:54 at the Matanzas 5K. Thirteenth overall in 15:58, Chelsea Blaase had been competing for Team USA at the Great Edinburgh International Cross Country just over a week earlier. Former Butler Bulldog Olivia Pratt was third in the women's standings and sixteenth overall in 16:21.

New road 6K state records for Florida during 2017

At the end of 2017, Ethan Clary's 19:15 stands as the fastest 6K time run on the Florida roads during the year, and Sonja Friend-Uhl's 22:29 as the fastest women's time. Both marks were recorded at the 3 June 2017 Heroes 6K in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Clary's time is also the fastest run on a USATF-certified course in Florida going back to at least 2013.

When 2017 opened, the oldest 6K race in Florida, Gulf Winds Track Club's Flash 6K, was scheduled to be run on a USATF-certified course for the first time. It looked like that for the first time, Florida would have four 6K races on certified courses--the Character Counts 6K in Saint Augustine on 3 February 2017, the Flash 6K in Saint Marks on 18 February 2017, the Heroes 6K in Fort Lauderdale on 3 June 2017, and the Ravine Gardens 6K in Palatka on 21 October 2017. However, the Ravine Gardens race was not only shortened to a 5K event, but because of race was ultimately canceled because of damage to Ravine Gardens State Park by Hurricane Irma. Hopefully the park will recover and the race will return as a 6K.

Geb Kiros
Geb Kiros

Florida still had three excellent six-kilometer races on USATF-certified courses during 2017. Andy Nicol opened the series with a 23:32 win at the Character Counts 6K, where Deana Reich won the women's competition in 26:59. Two weeks later, master runner Geb Kiros upped the ante with a 22:02 win in the Flash 6K. In the same race, Kat Sack established a new women's best for the year, going 26:02. But neither of those marks survived the third, final, and largest race on the circuit, the Heroes 6K. Ethan Clary led a field of more than 400 runners in that race, going 19:15. If anyone kept track of state records for the road 6K, that time would stand as the Florida record. Likewise, Sonja Friend-Uhl's 22:29 in the Heroes 6K would stand as the women's state record.

Katie Sack, Ann Centner
Kat Sack

Of course, not every 6K race in Florida is on the roads. In 2018 there will be two particularly significant 6K cross-country races in the state. The senior women's and junior women's races at the USATF National Cross-Country Championships will both be 6K, and both will be run on the Apalachee Regional Park Cross-Country Course near Tallahassee, Florida on 3 February 2018. As for the roads, Saint Augustine's sixth annual Character Counts 6K is scheduled for 3 February 2017 and the 30th annual Flash 6K is slated for 17 February 2018. There isn't a published date yet for Fort Lauderdale's 2018 Heroes 6K. Those are the three races for anyone who wants to chase Ethan Clary's 19:15 men's state record or Sonja Friend-Uhl's 22:29 women's state record.

Snyder and Krueger race with couer de lion at Bridge of Lions

Bridge of Lions 5KIt's proverbial that the state cross-country championship is won in July. The title race itself may be run in November, but the winners are those who were putting in serious training during the summer. That usually means base mileage punctuated by fartlek or the occasional track workout. Sometimes, though, the best workout is a race, and that might have been the thinking of Sean Snyder on Saturday morning, 15 July 2017. Snyder, headed into his senior season of racing cross-country at Saint Joseph Academy in Saint Augustine, Florida, stepped onto the Saint Augustine roads that morning and won the 33rd annual Bridge of Lions 5K, running 17:15. Jacksonville, Florida master runner Michelle Krueger took the women's title, placing fifteenth overall in 19:34.

Snyder had placed fourth in the 2016 Bridge of Lions 5K, then gone on to take fifth in the class 1A boys race at the FHSAA State Cross-Country Meet four months later. He wasn't without competition in the 2017 Bridge of Lions. Cash Tampa, a member of the University of South Florida cross-country team, finished second a few steps behind Snyder in 17:19. Saint Augustine's Justin Taylor was third in 17:27. Steve Vighetti of Saint Augustine was the fastest master runner in the race, placing eighth overall in 18:55.

Katie Potts, a 2016 alumna of the Nease High cross-country team, was the second woman and seventeenth overall, running 19:38. Katie Johnson of Melbourne, Florida was third in the woman's standings and 32nd overall in 20:47.

1171 athletes finished the 2017 Bridge of Lions 5K, the seventh of twelve events in the 2017 Run Saint Augustine Race Series. The race was presented by RaceSmith, which provided chip-timing and scoring for the race.

Abraham Lincoln Middle School athletes Veltcheva and Matchev conquer the Run For Peace

Saturday, 8 April 2017, was a good day in Saint Augustine, Florida for Abraham Lincoln Middle School. Ani Veltcheva--a student at the Gainesville, Florida school--was the first female and overall winner of the Betty Griffin Center's fourth annual Run For Peace 5K, running 17:43. A few steps behind Veltcheva, Anton Matchev--another Abraham Lincoln student--posted a 17:46 to finish as the first male and overall runner-up.

Matchev was the defending champion in the race, having run the 2016 event in 18:39. Veltcheva had her own history in the event. At the 2016 Betty Griffin race, she had run 18:47, setting a new road 5K single-age world record for nine-year old girls. That record had since been broken, but on in Clermont, Florida on 18 March 2017 Veltcheva had run a 17:17 road 5K, setting a new single-age world record for twelve-year-olds.

Dylan Glass of Saint Augustine was second in the men's standings and third overall, running 18:38. Saint Augustine's Andy Nicol edged Randy Mudd of Mechanicsville, Virginia 19:11 to 19:13 for top master runner honors. Nicol and Mudd were fifth and sixth overall.

Rachel Mudd, an eighth-grader on the Atlee High cross-country team in Mechanicsville, was second on the women's side and twelfth overall in 21:11. Saint Augustine's Michelle Fredette was the first woman master and third female finisher, 24th overall in 22:20.

400 athletes finished the 2017 Run For Peace 5K. RaceSmith, Inc., chip-timed the race. Jacob Smith of RaceSmith did the measurements and filed the paperwork to get the course USATF certified.
