Yates and Kennedy burn the Bridge of Lions 5K

On 16 July 2016 Florida's high school track season had been over for more than two months. Yet on the streets of Saint Augustine that Saturday morning three high school distance runners concluded the 32nd annual Bridge of Lions 5K with the kind of close finish that you see more often on the track than on the roads. Seabreeze High senior Ian Yates won the race in 17:38, but Father Lopez senior Noah Van Der Burgt was just a few steps back in 17:40. Barely trailing Van Der Burgt, Massillon (Ohio) Jackson High senior Sam Craig took third in 17:41. Just out of the fray, Sean Snyder, a junior at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, was fourth in 17:47. Saint Augustine's own Steve Vighetti was the fastest master runner in the race, coming in sixth overall in 17:58.


1159 athlete finished the Bridge of Lions 5K, which is definitely characteristic of a road race. Events on the track generally don't have that many people running, at least not all in the same section.


Ormond Beach, Florida's Mallory Kennedy took the women's title, placing seventh overall in 18:36. Megan Tramaglini of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was runner-up on the women's side and eighth overall in 18:44. Third in the women's standings went to Ani Veltcheva, a seventh-grader at Abraham Lincoln Middle School in Gainesville, Florida. Veltcheva placed eleventh overall in 19:02. Kim Pawelek Brantly of Saint Augustine was the first woman master and fourth female finisher placing sixteenth overall in 19:29. Brantly had been the defending champion in the women's division, having won the women's title at the Bridge of Lions in 2013, 2014, and 2015.


The Bridge of Lions 5K was the seventh of twelve events in the 2016 Run St. Augustine Race Series. The race was presented by RaceSmith, which provided chip-timing and scoring for the race.
